Melody stared at Elara with wide, tear-filled eyes.

Ever since she found out her father was going to be late, a voice had been looping in her head.

When she played with her friends, the voice faded. But the second she stopped, it screamed at her like a megaphone.

He doesn't love you anymore.

He doesn't want you anymore.

She had tried to fight it, telling herself that he did love her.

But a father who loved her wouldn't have missed her birthday party.

Melody felt utterly lost. She had wanted to ask her mother for reassurance so many times.

But Elara had told her that the guests were there to celebrate her, and if she was upset, she should only tell her mom in private. She wasn't allowed to take her anger out on her friends.

Her mother was already so busy taking care of everyone else.

Melody didn't want to be a burden. Her mom had worked so hard for the past few days.

Luckily, the other kids were loud enough to drown out the voice in her head when they played together.

But the doubt never truly went away.

Melody couldn't understand why he had promised to come home early that morning, only to never show up.

She especially couldn't understand why he kept breaking his promises.

Didn't he say he wouldn't do it again?

Why did he forget so fast?

She had spent all evening trying to make sense of it, but she couldn't.

However, she had found an answer for the voice that had tormented her all night.

If he didn't like her anymore?

Then she wouldn't like him anymore either.

If he didn't want her?

Then she didn't want him either.

When she came upstairs, Melody immediately deducted four points on The Daddy Scorecard, dropping his total from nine down to five.

She had decided she wasn't going to forgive him for a while.

So when he walked into the room, she ignored him.

Then, her lip quivered, and massive tears rolled down her cheeks.

Elara cupped Melody's face, gently wiping away the tears. She kissed her cheek and asked with a soft smile, "Do you not believe me either?"

"Huh?"

Melody instinctively shook her head hard.

She wanted to say out loud that she believed her mom.

But the moment she opened her mouth, a heartbroken wail tore from her throat.

"Waaah!"

Melody threw herself into Elara's arms, her tiny hands wrapping tightly around her neck. She buried her face in Elara's shoulder and sobbed uncontrollably.

Kneeling on the carpet, Elara held her tightly, letting the hot tears soak into her skin.

She rubbed Melody's back soothingly, occasionally pressing kisses to her cheek and hair, silently offering absolute, unwavering support.

After what felt like an eternity, Melody's cries finally began to quiet down.

Elara slowly stood up, carrying her daughter to the couch.

Melody was gasping for air, hiccuping against Elara's shoulder as she cried in a hoarse, broken voice.
