Elara stopped talking, looking at Maddox hesitantly, as if torn over whether to say more.

Maddox tilted his chin up, gesturing for her to go on. "Continue."

Elara obediently continued, "You know my situation and my family's background. I'm a stay-at-home mother who hasn't worked in years. I have absolutely no power to go up against a corporate boss."

"Even with my law degree, I can't fight Julian head-on, let alone face you and the Beckett family."

"If you step in to help him, I could fight for the rest of my life and still lose."

Elara never expected Maddox to be moved by a few words and tears, or to help an outsider take down his own flesh and blood.

Whether she was playing the sympathy card or pouring her heart out to show her determination, Elara had only one goal.

And that was to make Maddox stay out of it.

If he wasn't going to help her, the least he could do was not help Julian crush her.

Him doing absolutely nothing and just watching quietly would be the greatest help she could ask for.

Seeing her finally reveal her true intentions after beating around the bush, Maddox couldn't help but look at her in a new light. A hint of amusement touched his eyes, though it remained perfectly concealed behind his usual stern expression.

"Are you that confident I'll agree?" Maddox asked, genuinely curious.

Elara shook her head. "I never assumed that."

"But I had to try, didn't I?"

Maddox pressed on, "You just said there's a massive gap between you and Julian in status, power, and resources. You said you couldn't beat him. Even if I don't interfere, are you so sure you can win?"

"No," Elara answered without hesitation. "But at least I'll have tried. I'll have fought for it. If I lose after giving it my all, I'll accept it."

"I don't want to look back years from now, clinging to the delusional fantasy that I could have won if only I hadn't faced outside interference."
