For the past two hours, from entering the private room and ordering food to finishing their meal, Elara had been oscillating between playing the sympathy card and showcasing her unwavering resolve.
And then, right at the end, she had suddenly gone back on her own words.
If it had been anyone else, or even her in the past, Maddox would have thrown her out long ago.
Yet, faced with Elara's remarkably bold contradiction, Maddox surprisingly felt no anger.
Thinking it over, he actually found himself rather fond of her shameless audacity.
Was it because of Sebastian Vance's request?
Or simply because she reminded him so much of his daughter?
Maddox himself couldn't quite tell, but the answer in his heart was becoming increasingly clear.
"Didn't you say I was free to decide however I pleased?"
Maddox looked at Elara with amusement. "Aren't you afraid I'll be angry that you suddenly changed your mind?"
Elara observed him carefully before lifting her chin. "If you were truly angry, you wouldn't have let me keep talking."
Maddox raised an eyebrow.
Elara met the older man's gaze steadily and made her solemn plea. "For Melody's sake, I hope you can help us."
Maddox held her gaze for a moment, then leaned heavily on the table and stood up.
Seeing him prepare to leave, Elara quickly got up. She hurried to open the door, then supported him as he stepped out.
Maddox's driver had grabbed a table outside to eat while waiting for him.
Seeing them emerge, the driver immediately rushed over to take Elara's place and help Maddox.
Elara knew she didn't need to follow them any further, but since she still hadn't received a clear answer, she didn't let go, walking alongside the driver to assist Maddox.
As they neared the restaurant entrance, Maddox gently waved the hand Elara was holding. "Go pay the bill. We don't want anyone thinking we're dining and dashing."
It was a clear dismissal, telling her not to see him out.
Elara obediently stopped, but she didn't immediately turn to the register. Instead, she stood right where she was, watching him walk away.
Maddox walked slowly. As he and his driver stepped through the main doors, he suddenly halted.
"Keep your phone on. I'll have a lawyer contact you."
He tossed the casual remark over his shoulder, then resumed his slow, steady pace forward.
Elara's eyes widened in shock. It took a second for the words to register, and when they did, she bowed deeply toward his retreating back. "Thank you."
Her only goal and hope today had been to secure his promise not to interfere. She had never imagined he would actually agree to help her!
It was an utterly unexpected and staggering victory!
She watched Maddox step into the elevator. Only after the doors glided shut and the numbers began to descend did Elara finally turn back to the front desk to settle the bill.
Stepping out of the restaurant, Elara immediately contacted Sarah Norwood. She met with Sarah to completely restructure her litigation strategy.
When it was time, she went straight to pick up Melody. She took her daughter to the grocery store, picked up a few essentials, and brought them to the house she had just rented.
Melody was used to going on supply runs with Elara for their old apartment. Arriving at the new house, she looked around in confusion. "Mommy, is Daddy getting a new house again?"
