Elara fought hard to keep her tears from falling.
But Melody understood everything.
She leaned in closer, pressing her small body into Elara's embrace. Lifting both hands, she gently cupped her mother's face, her soft, chubby palms radiating warmth.
Melody's brow furrowed in deep concern. Her lips parted as she tried to think of what to say, searching for the exact words that would comfort her mom without accidentally hurting her and causing her to cry again.
Seeing her daughter struggling to articulate her thoughts, Elara didn't rush her. She stayed perfectly still, letting Melody hold her face as she waited patiently.
Melody ran through several things she could say, but she rejected them all, genuinely lacking confidence in her own words.
"Don't cry."
Finally, mimicking how her mother always comforted her, she used her thumbs to gently wipe away the stray tear that had escaped the corner of Elara's eye. "I love Mommy. I'll be good and listen to Mommy."
She paused for a moment before adding, "Wherever Mommy lives, I'll live."
She was answering Elara's earlier question about whether she wanted to live with her.
She wanted to stay with her mom.
Anywhere was fine.
As long as they were together.
Worried that her words weren't comforting enough, Melody kept her hands on Elara's face, leaned forward, and planted a firm kiss on her forehead.
"Daddy did something wrong and won't say sorry. I don't like him."
"If he doesn't want us, we don't want him either!"
Melody spoke the words slowly, deliberately puffing out her cheeks in anger. She punctuated every syllable, her childish tone carrying a hilariously fierce intensity.
"Don't be scared, Mommy. When Daddy is mean to you, I'll protect you."
"Just like how Mommy protects me."
After delivering her speech, Melody suddenly grew shy. Fearing she hadn't said it right, she simply threw her arms around Elara's neck and buried her face in her mother's shoulder.
"Melody?"
Elara was a bit bewildered. She tried to pull back to check on her, but Melody clung tightly, refusing to let go.
