Melody nodded enthusiastically. "Okay!"

She bent down and continued pulling items out of the grocery bags. With yogurt in one hand and spices in the other, she handed them up to Elara. "Mommy, you put these away. I'm too short."

Laughing, Elara took the yogurt and spices, sorting them into the fridge and the cabinets.

The property was a brand-new, fully furnished two-story duplex. It came equipped with all the latest appliances. Word was it had originally been intended as a marital home, but for whatever reason, those plans fell through. The landlady had listed it through an agency at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Once Elara had made her decision, she signed the lease that very morning. When the landlady heard Elara would be living there with her daughter and mother, she generously knocked a few hundred dollars off the monthly rent—perhaps sensing a kindred spirit. She even told Elara to use whatever was in the house and let her know if they needed anything else.

Everything in the house was brand new, and they lacked for nothing. With the landlady's blessing, Elara didn't hesitate. After double-checking everything, she realized they only needed to buy a few daily essentials and bring over their personal belongings to be fully settled.

Her main goal today had simply been to bring Melody over, find the right moment to confess the truth, and gauge her reaction. If Melody had resisted, Elara would have held off on moving and just brought her by on weekends to help her adjust.

She never expected Melody to be so understanding. Not only did her daughter put up zero resistance, she eagerly dove right into organizing their new home.

By the time the two of them finished putting all the groceries away, it was already dark outside.

Because they hadn't gone home and hadn't told Jocelyn Sterling where they were, the older woman grew worried and called to ask if they were coming back for dinner.

Elara picked up the phone and explained exactly what was going on.

Julian had only brought up divorce the night before. Although Jocelyn had seen it coming, she hadn't expected Elara to move this fast—she had already rented a house!

"Is Julian keeping the house here?"

Jocelyn asked, thoroughly confused and deeply unhappy with Julian's actions. How could he be so cruel as to deny his wife and daughter the house they had lived in?

Melody was his daughter too. How could he be so heartless?

But then again, if Julian truly cared about Melody, he wouldn't have been so heartless in the first place. He knew how sensitive his daughter was, yet he still chose to betray them, hurting Melody over and over again.

Thinking it over, Jocelyn realized that moving out of a house tainted by such unpleasant memories wasn't a bad idea at all.

"Just come back and eat first. I'll head over tomorrow to clean it up."

Jocelyn was worried about them. "It's late. What can you and Melody even do there right now?"

"We're just getting the daily essentials sorted for the new house."
