Maddox had been incredibly thorough, assigning her two attorneys. One was a highly renowned female divorce lawyer in the industry.
The other was a male lawyer specializing in corporate finance and economics.
After chatting on the phone and exchanging contacts, the divorce lawyer immediately scheduled a meeting.
Elara changed clothes, applied some light, everyday makeup, grabbed her files, and headed out alone to the appointment.
The lawyer's name was Gillian Thorne. She looked to be in her forties, and unlike her gentle-sounding name, she was tall and imposing, her long hair swept up neatly. Dressed in a sharp business suit, she radiated pure, uncompromising efficiency.
After some brief pleasantries, Elara handed her the meticulously organized files.
Gillian took the folder and pulled out the documents. After scanning just the first page, she paused and cast a piercing glance across the table at Elara.
It was a look of distinct surprise mixed with intense curiosity about her client's true identity.
But she didn't say a word, simply returning her attention to the rest of the file.
Ten minutes later, Gillian set the documents down. She took a sip of her coffee before giving Elara her full, undivided attention. "Are you a lawyer yourself, Ms. Sterling?"
Elara nodded. "I used to be."
Gillian still looked perplexed.
Elara smiled and pointed to the stack of files. "As you can see, I've spent the past few years as a stay-at-home mom. I haven't practiced in a long time."
Gillian nodded. Since they were practically peers, she didn't bother sugarcoating it. "The chain of evidence is flawless, and the files are perfectly organized. Honestly, you could probably win this case without me, couldn't you?"
Elara didn't confirm or deny it. She took a sip of her own coffee, the ceramic base of her cup making a sharp, pleasant clink against the saucer as she set it down.
"But I need your help," Elara said with a slight smile.
"I'm not a specialized divorce attorney, and I've been out of the game for too long. I'm not entirely up to date on the current legal nuances, so I need someone with your expertise."
Since Maddox had handpicked her, Elara figured anything she said would likely make its way back to him. She decided not to beat around the bush. "I also need Maddox's backing."
Gillian understood instantly.
When she first received Maddox's assignment, she naturally had to look into her client's background.
Upon discovering she was representing Maddox's daughter-in-law in a divorce against his own son, she was floored. In her twenty-plus years of practice, she had seen every flavor of family drama and bizarre litigation, but a father-in-law hiring her specifically to help his daughter-in-law ruin his son was a spectacular first.
And more importantly, her job was to help the daughter-in-law seize the son's assets...
When Gillian finally untangled the dynamics of her new assignment, she had been left utterly dumbfounded for a good while.
But Maddox hadn't mentioned that his daughter-in-law was a former attorney who had single-handedly executed all the evidence collection and notarizations.
Elara might have claimed she wasn't a specialized divorce lawyer, but her skills were clearly formidable. At the very least, Gillian wouldn't have to lift a finger regarding discovery and documentation.
This was probably the easiest case she had landed in her entire career.
With Elara laying it out so plainly, everything clicked into place for Gillian.
It turned out she was just a high-priced prop Elara was using to secure Maddox's protection!
