Elara couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Yet, she couldn't find a single flaw in Sebastian's words.
He had always been close to her, always harboring a deep sense of gratitude for the way she had cared for him when he was a child. It was perfectly normal for him to be pleased that she remembered his past and cared about his well-being.
But for some reason, whenever she met Sebastian’s eyes—which were currently swimming with an unusual, deep tenderness—that strange, inexplicable feeling bloomed in her chest, completely out of her control.
And every time she tried to look closer, that unnerving tenderness would vanish, returning to normal and making her feel like she was entirely overthinking things.
After he spoke, Sebastian dialed back his vulnerable expression and looked at her curiously. "What's wrong?"
He raised a hand to his own face. "Do I have something on my cheek?"
Elara shook her head, pulling her analyzing gaze away from him, and pushed herself up from the table. "No. Just give me your bowl. I'll wash it."
Sebastian stood up immediately, grabbing his dishware and turning toward the kitchen. "I've got it."
Elara froze, blurting out, "You know how to do dishes?"
Sebastian paused, looking back at her with a thoroughly offended expression. "I helped you wash dishes all the time when I was a kid. Did you forget?"
Elara blinked. Then she blinked again, desperately trying to mask her awkwardness.
She had indeed forgotten, but his reminder instantly brought the memories rushing back.
Back then, Sebastian had been utterly paralyzed by the grief of losing his mother. He had been like a wooden puppet, mindlessly doing whatever the adults told him, completely devoid of his own spark or emotions.
