A look of utter disbelief washed over Julian’s face, as if he had just uncovered an impossible secret.
"You don't say? Are the employees at Ark Solutions really that inefficient, Julian? Do they constantly need to work overtime?"
Julian was speechless.
Vance Dynamics, a massive corporate empire, strictly enforced weekends off without any dragged-out overtime. Yet Ark Solutions, merely a mid-to-small-sized subsidiary under their umbrella, was somehow busy enough to work year-round? It was either a sweatshop or there were unspeakable hidden agendas at play.
With just a few casual remarks, Sebastian expertly punctured the 'busy with overtime' excuse Julian had been peddling for weeks.
He was reminding Julian that his lack of time for his family was entirely his own doing, and projecting his anger onto others was useless.
At the same time, Sebastian was subtly reminding Elara and Melody exactly how egregious this man’s recent behavior had been.
Sure enough, as soon as Sebastian’s words settled, Julian instinctively looked toward Elara and Melody.
Melody clung to Elara's waist, leaning against her as she watched the exchange. She didn't grasp the subtle sarcasm in Sebastian's words, but she understood they were talking about work and days off.
With a child’s simple logic, she didn't know the exact reasons her father hadn't come home. She only remembered that he used to try his best to be there for her. Then, abruptly, he stopped coming home, and shortly after, he abandoned her and her mother.
All she knew was that her father was bad and didn't love them anymore.
When Julian's gaze met hers, their eyes locked for a mere second before Melody immediately looked away.
Since her father didn't love them anymore, she had no reason to keep loving him either.
The little girl buried her face back into Elara's embrace, leaving Julian staring at the back of her head.
Elara didn't avoid his gaze like Melody had, but she offered no real response either. She just stared at him with an expression of cold, apathetic indifference, exactly the same way she would look at any other tourist in the park. In her eyes, Julian was now nothing more than an irrelevant passerby.
