However, explaining too much only made him look pathetic, laying his utter powerlessness bare for all to see.
Julian caught himself mid-sentence and swallowed the rest of his words.
He glanced at Elara again. Seeing that she had absolutely no intention of communicating with him—not even bothering to meet his eyes—he felt a sharp sting of rejection and hastily withdrew his anxious gaze.
"I called you," Julian said, turning to Sebastian. "But you didn't answer."
Sebastian casually shrugged. "Sorry. I was playing with the kid, didn't notice."
Julian was speechless.
The anger he had just suppressed flared up instantly at those words.

Sebastian, however, didn't seem to care about Julian's internal turmoil.

Melody peeked out from Elara's embrace. Carefully avoiding the sight of Julian standing nearby, she met Sebastian's eyes and shook her head.
"Alright, then I'll pack up the kite."
Sebastian started moving, winding the string back around the spool while thoughtfully checking in with Elara. "The wind is picking up a bit. Should we head back for the day?"
"Sure."
Elara agreed. "It's almost noon anyway. Let's go home and make lunch."
