Chapter 107
“… You’re back earlier than we expected.”
I looked at her. “I was worried you’d be waiting impatiently. But now it seems like I’m not exactly welcome.”
Lily’s face went redder. She reached out and hit my arm lightly.
I pushed the door open wider and wheeled my suitcase inside. Ethan was standing in the centre of the living room, trying very hard to look like he’d been busy organising things on the coffee table. His shirt was half-tucked and half-out. His ears were the colour of someone who’d been pinched
hard.
“I miss you, Ethan.” I hugged him, then pushed the suitcase into the corner.
“I miss you too.” Ethan hold me tightly a second.
Then I reached into my bag, and pulled out a small package wrapped in greaseproof paper. I set it on the dining table.
“Your mum made sandwiches. Thought you might want some.
Lily stared at the paper package. Then her expression shifted from embarrassment to something that looked a lot like disbelief.
“You… made up with them?”
My hand paused on the strap of my bag. “…Something like that.”
Lily’s eyes lit up, let out a small cheer. Then she grabbed my arm and pulled me onto the sofa, demanding the full story. I gave her the abbreviated version-enough to make her happy, not enough to make her cry. Ethan sat nearby and smiled.
–
After she’d calmed down, I asked her. “Does your mum know about you and Ethan?”
Lily’s face coloured again. She ducked her head. “…Probably not. If she finds out, she’ll make me break up with him. She doesn’t want me with someone with no money.”

Ethan was pouring coffee. He froze at the word “no money.” He set the pot down and turned to her. “I’m not someone with no money.”
Lily took the coffee from his hand, sipped it, and gave him a look that said keep telling yourself that She nodded. “Sure. You’re not.”
Ethan’s expression went serious, nearly desperate. “I’m really not. I mean it-”
The doorbell rang.
Ethan’s sentence was cut off. He got up to answer the door, still muttering under his breath- “what do you mean, no money…”
He opened the door.
Outside stood a middle-aged man in a dark grey suit. His hair was combed precisely. His posture
was straight.
When he saw Ethan, he bowed slightly. His voice was respectful, controlled.
“Mr. Caldwell, there’s an urgent family matter that requires your presence. The Chairman asked me to bring you back.”
The air in the room stopped moving.
Lily spat out her coffee.
Ethan stood in the doorway with his hand on the handle. His knuckles tightened.
“Got it.” he said to the man outside, his voice low. “Give me ten minutes.” Then he closed the
door
He leaned his back against the door panel and turned to face the living room. Both of us were staring at him.
Lily still had her coffee cup raised. There was a ring of milk foam at the corner of her mouth. She hadn’t wiped it. She was just looking at Ethan with wide eyes, her expression was shock.
“So…” She swallowed. “You’re actually rich.”
Ithan was quiet for a second. He reached up and rubbed the back of his neck, like he was searching for the right way to say something he’d been hiding for a long time.
“Yeah My dad is the chairman of Ashford Group The man outside is his chief of staff”
