“I may have cared for you once,” he finally answered her unspoken question. “But that faint affection died the day you let your parents humiliate me.”

A mocking smile tugged at his lips. “As for all those sweet words I told you later? They were only meant to keep you compliant. Thank you for helping me deal with Evan. I have things to attend to, so don’t seek me out again.”

With that, Nathan turned and walked away.

A sharp, stabbing pain twisted Camille’s heart. She numbly returned to her hospital room, only to find Riona and Zoe waiting for her.

“You went through with the divorce?” Riona asked.

Camille nodded faintly and sat down on the bed.

“I spoke to your doctor. Nothing serious. You can be discharged tomorrow. I’ll send someone to pick you up,” Riona said, her tone as businesslike as ever.

A flicker of relief stirred in Camille. At least the Sterling family hadn’t abandoned her. She truly had nowhere else to go.

She spoke to him without a shred of mercy.

“I won’t touch you. May I not even stay nearby?”

“Must I put it more plainly? The very idea of sharing the same air as you disgusts me.”

He turned and left.

Elena sat back down. Once her emotions settled, she checked the time and headed back toward

the ward.

As she stepped into the corridor beside the garden, she caught sight of a familiar figure. It was Alexander.

He had been standing there for who knew how long. His face looked worn, yet his expression gave nothing away.

Her lips parted. She wanted to explain that she had only run into Nathan by chance, but the words died on her tongue.
