The hospital room fell so quiet one could hear a pin drop. Elena lay on the bed; Alexander stood on the floor. Less than a yard apart, yet an uncrossable chasm stretched between them.
Alexander took a deep breath, as if suppressing something kaw.
‘Get some rest. I’ll come see you in a few days.”
With that, he turned on his heel and strode out.
Not long after, Ryan arrived. He gathered all the documents Alexander had left behind. Before leaving, he glanced at Elena.
“Mrs. Kingsley…” His tone was heavy. “Mr. Kingsley’s been under a lot of strain lately-”
“I don’t want to hear his name. I’m sorry, Ryan.” Elena covered her eyes. The mere sound of his name made her ache.
Ryan sighed and left without another word.
Alone at last.
The food on the table had gone cold. Beside it sat a plate of freshly washed fruit, cut into bite-sized pieces and skewered with toothpicks.
A nurse walked in, holding a bottle of medicine. Elena quickly composed her face.
“I’ve switched your iron supplement-still for anemia… Mrs. Kingsley, your husband is so thoughtful. He stayed back to ask the doctor all about your condition, even details about the delivery.”
Envy shone in the nurse’s eyes. A handsome, wealthy, and caring husband-true luck in ten lifetimes,
Elena forced a smile. “Is that so? Thank you.”
“You’re so lucky. I’ve never met anyone so attentive… The nurse chattered on, then noticed Elena’s weary closed eyes. “I’ll leave you to rest.”
Silence again.
Elena opened her red-rimmed eyes and stared at the ceiling.
How have things come to this between Alexander and me?
Two more days in the hospital. After her checkup, she was cleared for discharge Gideon came to pick her
the stowed her luggage in the trunk. Once she was seated, he pulled away.
“I didn’t say where to go. I’m not going to Kingsley Manor Elena tensed.

But soon she realized he wasn’t heading to the manor-instead, toward the new villa she shared with Alexander.
“I’m not staying there. I bought a new place. Take me there.”
Gideon acted as if he hadn’t heard. “The new place is unfamiliar. Stay here for now. He told me to bring you here… said he won’t come by, so you can relax.”
Elena’s fingers tightened around her seatbelt.
“How’s his treatment going?”
“Stable.” Gideon paused. “He said to take care of yourself. The divorce talk can wait until you’re stronger.”
A lump formed in Elena’s throat. She closed her eyes and didn’t insist on leaving.
“Elena, divorce isn’t trivial. You’re already far along. Have you thought about what happens if the baby grows up without a father? How will you both manage?”
Gideon glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
Her lashes fluttered, eyes still closed, mind in chaos.
The car pulled up to the villa gates.
“Thanks for driving me.” Elena unbuckled her belt and reached for the door.
It was locked.
She tried twice, then looked at Gideon.
He was watching her, his gaze unreadable, thick with something she couldn’t name.
Her heart skipped a beat. She knew what he meant, but she didn’t want to go there. “I’m here, Gideon.”
His grip on the wheel tightened.
“Elena… if you and Alexander really divorce, I could-”
“Gideon, I’m here. Thank you for today.” She cut him off before he could finish. “And thank you for always being there. To me, you’re family-like a brother.”
She smiled, bright as the day they first met. Her eyes were clear, no trace of romantic affection.
That one sentence said it all.
He should have known. For years, they’d kept missing each other, watching her fall for someone else.
Sometimes, one missed chance is forever.
Gideon laughed softly.
