Confusion was plain in his bleary eyes.
Who was holding him? Mommy? How was it possible?
Kevin’s eyes widened, and he was certain.
It was Mommy. And Daddy was with him, too.
“Mommy!”
He reached out and wrapped his arms around Madeleine’s neck
tightly.
Madeleine was moved, her heart throbbing.
How much was he afraid of her leaving?
“Everything is OK, Kev.”
She comforted Kevin for a few more minutes and asked
Roderick to get some tissues to wipe the boy’s sweat.
“Daddy, why are you here?”
Madeleine and Kevin looked at Roderick simultaneously.
Chapter 13
“Ricki, did you follow me?”
Madeleine approached him with wide eyes. “Are you fond of
such sickening games now?”
Roderick’s face clouded. He thought Madeleine was making an
excuse to fight with him again.
Out of the blue, she giggled, “Did you secretly read my comic books again? Were you imitating the obsessive, controlling
CEO?”
Dumbfounded, Roderick glowered at her.
“Madeleine, did you just say I read your comic books? Secretly?
I dare you to say that again!”
It was over ten years ago. They were in junior high. Madeleine
was a comic book groupie.
Comic books were prohibited by the school and parents. Every
time she finished reading one, she put it in Roderick’s drawer.
Then, the school conducted an ambush inspection. As a result,
Roderick had to do a self–inspection in front of the class,
holding a pile of comic books, deeply humiliated.
Afterward, he ignored Madeleine for a week.
Chapter 13
“Fine. You didn’t.”
Just as before, he was still quick to anger. Without hesitation,
Madeleine tousled his hair with one hand.
“Now, now, don’t be upset. Say, how come you’ve grown up so
much?”
Madeleine missed out on the subtle changes in Roderick’s
expression. She hadn’t touched his head in many years.
“Wait. How did you come in?”
“The receptionist gave me a key card.”
Then, Roderick added, “We’re married. It’s normal that the
receptionist gave me a spare key card.”
Madeleine opened her mouth and nodded awkwardly.
She’d forgotten again that they were married.
“Daddy, Mommy, I’m sleepy.” Kevin yawned. He could hardly
keep his eyes open.
Madeleine checked the time. It wasn’t 7 a.m. yet. After a yawn, she lay down, holding Kevin in her arms.
Chapter 13
“Let’s sleep for a bit longer. We can get up at 9.”
Since Roderick was there, she moved back a little in bed.
“Are you sleepy? Will you take a nap?”
Roderick’s pupils contracted a little. This felt surreal.
He couldn’t even remember the last time they shared a bed.
After merely a hesitation of three seconds, Roderick took off his
jacket and lay beside his wife and son.
If this were a dream, he’d like it to never end.
At least, Madeleine’s mind was sound now.
The three of them breathed evenly and fell asleep soon.
Downstairs, Gerry waited anxiously in the lobby.
This didn’t feel right. Why was it taking so long? Was his boss
pinned to the floor by Madeleine’s lover?

At 9 a.m., the alarm clock went off. Despite her sleepiness,
Madeleine got up. When she turned her head, she found that
Chapter 13
Roderick was gone.
“Eh? Was it a dream?”
Where was Roderick?
She scratched her head. When she got dressed, Roderick
returned, followed by a waiter with a cart.
He’d gone to order breakfast for them.
Madeleine looked at him, her eyes sparkling.
“Ricki, when did you become so thoughtful? This is sweet. You
took my lunch on a spring tour in primary school. I forgive you.”
Roderick was surprised to hear this.
“You have a long memory. You even remember the things in
primary school?”
“Of course. Even the things in kindergarten are vivid in my
mind.”
