He was terrified of losing her.
Experiencing that kind of fear just once was enough to brand it
into his very bones.
So when their son innocently said he wanted a little sister, the
sealed–up, terrifying memories burst forth, causing him to
nearly lose control.
Madeleine’s heart felt like it was soaking in warm acid, swelling
and aching.
She finally, completely understood his extreme reaction back
then.
It wasn’t that he didn’t love the child, but that he loved her too
much.
Loved her so much he couldn’t bear even the slightest risk of
losing her.
“I’m so sorry.”
Her nose tingled, not because she’d done anything wrong, but
Chapter 302
because her heart ached for the psychological trauma he’d
carried alone for so many years. “I made you worry for so long.”
“Silly.”
Roderick pulled her deeper into his embrace, resting his chin on
the top of her head, his voice muffled. “I’m the one who should
be sorry. I failed to protect you, I let you suffer so much.”
Madeleine shook her head forcefully in his arms. “It wasn’t your
fault.”
It’s a hurdle every mother might face; hers just happened to be
especially dangerous.
She looked up, saw his still–tense jawline, and deliberately
spoke in a lighthearted tone.
“But look, I’m perfectly fine now, aren’t I?
Alive and kicking, and I can still piss you off!”
Roderick looked down at her forced, cheerful smile, and the
gloom in his eyes finally lifted a little. He couldn’t help but lean
down and kiss her forehead:
“Yeah. It’s best that you’re okay.”
Chapter 302
In the following days, the atmosphere at the Livingston family villa became exceptionally… warm, even a little overly so.
It was as if that dream had opened up Madeleine’s energy
channels, and many forgotten details and emotions came
rushing back.
A huge sense of guilt and the precious feeling of having them
back drove her to want to give Roderick and her son the best of
everything in the world.
Towards Roderick, she was so considerate it was almost scary.
When Roderick came downstairs, breakfast wasn’t just ready; it
was prepared precisely to his preferred level of soft–boiled egg
and coffee temperature.
It also came with an energetic good–morning kiss and some
over–the–top compliments like, “Hubby, you look so handsome
today.”
When he went to the office, she would even call him during her
two–minute dance breaks to check in.
“Are you tired?”
“Remember to drink water!”
Chapter 302
“Did Gerry remind you to eat?”
Sometimes the call would come right in the middle of a
meeting, and Roderick would never hesitate to answer.
Madeleine’s voice would echo in the quiet conference room,
and even Gerry couldn’t help but feel embarrassed for his boss.
But the boss himself was quite pleased and didn’t feel
embarrassed at all.
As for her son, Kevin, Madeleine had switched to “unlimited
spoiling” mode.
The snacks that were once restricted were now allowed in a
small portion every day, and she would even eat with him,
calling it “doubling the joy of sharing.”
The educational cartoons he used to have to watch were now
replaced with his favorite dinosaur team show, and Madeleine
would even endure the boredom to discuss with him which
dinosaur was stronger.
The bedtime stories increased from one book to three, told with
lively expression and even role–playing, and she often ended up falling asleep before her son did.
What confused little Kevin the most was the way his mom

looked at him, always filled with a certain… um… something he
couldn’t describe. It was as if he were a priceless, long–lost
treasure, making her want to lean in for kisses and hugs while
looking at him, muttering, “Mommy’s precious Kev.”
