Madeleine was taken aback.
“Huh?
No, Mommy’s fine.”
Kevin grew even more confused, his little brows furrowed
tightly. “Then why are you acting so weird, Mommy?”
He looked up, his big, dark eyes full of sincere worry. “Daddy
said, when someone is being overly attentive for no reason,
they’re either… either up to no good or a thief.”
Kevin trailed off and looked up at Madeleine, silent for a long
moment. Finally, he asked in a careful, tentative voice:
“Mom, did you do something wrong?
“Or… are you being nice to me because you’re going to divorce
Dad?”
As he said this, the little guy’s voice dropped a little.
Madeleine didn’t register it at first. It took a moment before it

hit her, and an undeniable pang of sadness rose in her heart.
She didn’t say anything, just leaned over and kissed the little
guy on the forehead.
This child… even though his mother’s treatment was working
well and she was physically much better.
But whenever something scary came up, he’d still
unconsciously become a bundle of nerves.
The only thing Madeleine could do was to soothe him with love,
with enough love to overflow.
“Kev.”
Madeleine’s eyes grew moist. She looked at Kevin very
seriously and said, “Didn’t Mommy promise you? I won’t divorce
Daddy. Mommy loves Daddy very, very much, and I love Kev
very much, too. How could I ever bear to leave you?”
Just that one sentence immediately swept away the gloom in
Kevin’s heart.
He broke into a happy grin.
“I knew it! Mommy couldn’t bear to leave me. I love Mommy

and Daddy so much.”
Kevin happily hugged his mom, his teacher’s words from
kindergarten echoing in his mind.
You have to be brave about expressing your love.
Especially to your mommy and daddy.
Hmm… he decided. From now on, he would tell his mom “I love
you” ten times a day.
No, a hundred times!
“But Mommy.”
Kevin looked up. “Why have you been so nice to me lately?”
“Mommy wants to make it up to you.”
Madeleine didn’t want to bring up the past, so she deliberately
left her sentence half–finished.
But the little guy was too smart. He understood immediately,
and his expression grew serious.
“Mommy, you don’t have to make it up to me. What happened before wasn’t your fault. Daddy said you had your reasons, and

Daddy and I both understand.”
“Hmm?”
Madeleine curiously pinched the little guy’s chubby cheek.
“Did Daddy talk to you?”
“Yep.”
In his childish voice, the little guy vividly recounted what his dad
had told him.
Even though he was just a little munchkin, he sounded like a
little adult when he said it.
Madeleine listened with a smile, a warm feeling spreading
through her heart.
Roderick knew how hard those days had been for her, when she
was under the narrative control.
He never blamed her.
And he certainly didn’t want his son to blame her.
This love was far more precious than any words.

“Oh, Kev, what am I going to do? Mommy loves you and Daddy
more and more now.”
“Hehe.”
The little guy happily wrapped his arms around Madeleine’s
neck.
His mom still had that familiar, lovely scent. It smelled so good.
When Roderick walked in, this was the scene of motherly love
that greeted him.
The exhaustion from rushing to the company for an early
morning meeting vanished in an instant.
“What are you two talking about? So heartwarming.”
“We were praising you.”
Madeleine joked with a smile, getting up from the sofa with the
