“What is there to apologize for?”
Rebecca looked up, her brow furrowed, “What they said was
really nasty.”
Adrian pondered for a few seconds, then leaned down slightly
to bring his gaze level with Rebecca’s, looking seriously into her
eyes.
“They’re gossiping because we’ve broken some kind of
convention they understand. In their eyes, a powerful female
entrepreneur should be with an equally prominent partner in a
strategic marriage, or a househusband willing to stay in the background. And I happen to be neither.”
He looked down, holding Rebecca’s hands with both of his.
“So they’ll be confused, they’ll speculate, and they’ll use their
limited imaginations to label our relationship in all sorts of
ways.”
As Adrian spoke, he suddenly chuckled.
“But what does that have to do with us?”
Chapter 310
He gently squeezed her fingers, the corners of his mouth
curving into a gentle smile.
“I know why I’m standing here–it’s because of you. You know
why you brought me here–it’s because of me. We both know
each other’s value, and that’s what’s most important. The noise
from others, just filter it out.”
Rebecca looked at him, meeting the unwavering certainty in his
eyes, and the restlessness and guilt in her heart slowly
subsided.
In its place was a more solid warmth.
That’s right, why should she care so much about what other
people think?
Rebecca stared at Adrian for a moment, then suddenly tilted
her head.
“Professor Shaw, there’s a kind of magic in the way you speak.”
“Hmm?”
Adrian was caught off guard by her sudden change of topic and
didn’t understand what she meant for a moment.
Chapter 310
Rebecca pulled her hand away and wrapped her arm around
Adrian’s.
“I think you’d be a great teacher. If you were my teacher, I’m
sure I’d do better on my exams because… I can understand
everything you say.”
It wasn’t a confession of love, but those words were sweeter
than any declaration of love.
Staring at her slightly upturned face, Adrian saw his own
reflection in her eyes.
The calm and restraint he always relied on suddenly failed him
in that moment.
In the distance was the noisy chatter of guests.
Before him was his entire world.
The world around them seemed to fall silent for a moment as
Adrian lowered his head, his warm lips precisely covering hers.
An unexpected, yet tender and lingering kiss.
It instantly made Rebecca’s heart flutter, and her body
softened.
Chapter 310
Adrian was too tall. She had worn low–heeled shoes for
socializing today, so now, to find a comfortable angle, she had
to stand on her tiptoes as much as she could.
Suddenly, someone approached.
“Miss Whitman… oh, I’m so sorry!”
Rebecca quickly pulled back, her cheeks flushing a visible
shade of red.
Turning her head, she saw it was a waiter and could only
awkwardly call out to him.
“What is it?”
The waiter’s face turned red too, and he glanced curiously at
the man beside her, who looked as calm as if nothing had
happened.
“This… someone just dropped this off and said it had to be
given to Miss Whitman.”
Rebecca took it. It was a cardboard box, and she couldn’t tell
what was inside.
“Who brought this over?”
Chapter 310
“I don’t know. The security guard at the entrance took it. The
person didn’t have an invitation, so they couldn’t come in.”
Rebecca nodded, “Okay, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
After the waiter left, Rebecca turned and placed the cardboard
box on the table behind her.
She untied the ribbon on top. The moment she opened the box,
a faint, musty smell, characteristic of old paper, mixed with a
barely–there hint of mildew, wafted out.
There was nothing horrifying in the box, just a slightly worn
hardcover notebook and a bundle of letters carefully tied with a
ribbon.
On the envelope, five words were written in a scrawled, forceful
