“It’s alright, sweetie. I’ll keep my promises.”
“Kindergarten and the hospital are in opposite directions,”
Roderick countered, his brow furrowed.
He was thinking about her tendency toward low blood sugar
when fasting, but kept the concern to himself.
“It will only take a moment. I promised our son. We sealed it
with a pinky swear. Kev, I’ll go with you.”
The little boy’s pout instantly transformed into a bright smile.
“Mommy really is the best,” he thought, remembering the
nursery rhyme about a mother’s love.
Roderick watched them silently.
While he was glad to see their bond strengthening, his fear
persisted.
Chapter 34
If Madeleine regained her memories, Kevin would be
devastated all over again.
That fear was why he maintained his distance.
His heart, already broken, could not withstand another blow.
Her stomach growled. Watching them eat was unbearable. She
turned to retreat to her room, then paused.
“Roderick, where did we hold our wedding?”
“Quelcia.”
Her expression shifted subtly. “Oh,” she murmured. “Quelcia. I… I always loved it there.”
He said nothing, focusing instead on wiping Kevin’s chin with a
napkin.
“Why else would I have chosen it?” he thought.
But her question puzzled him.
His contemplation was interrupted. Kevin was meticulously
deconstructing his sandwich, carefully extracting the ham and
placing it on Roderick’s plate.
Chapter 34
“Kevin.”
Roderick’s voice held a warning note. “Haven’t I told you not to
be fussy about food?”
The boy flinched, withdrawing his hand and looking up with
uncertain eyes.
Roderick was confused.
“Why are you giving this to me?”
Kevin wasn’t a fussy eater and usually enjoyed ham.
The little boy remained silent.
“Tell me.”
Roderick prompted, softening his tone.
After a brief silence, as if carefully choosing his words, Kevin
finally spoke up.
“I want you to eat more protein. To get stronger.”
“What? Why?”
“Mommy said you aren’t strong enough. That she doesn’t like

you. I want Mommy to like you.”
Roderick’s eye twitched as he spent a long while processing
Kevin’s words.
“Your mommy said… I’m not strong enough?” he asked, his jaw
tightening.
Kevin nodded, his small face serious as he recalled the phrase
exactly.
“Yes. She said you’re too weak to be a builder.”
A sharp crack sounded.
Kirsten entered just then, carrying a packed sandwich. Her eyes
went to the table.
“Good heavens, sir! You’ve broken the fork!”
Roderick looked down. The fork in his hand had snapped in two.
He frowned and discarded the pieces.
“Get another one.”
“Right away, I’ll fetch it.”
Chapter 34
Kirsten cleared the cutlery, muttering under her breath, “This tableware isn’t sturdy at all. I must have new sets delivered
tomorrow.”
She returned with a new fork for Roderick and also placed a
lunchbox on the table.
“Sir, this is the breakfast for Mrs. Livingston. There’s a custard inside. Please remind her to eat it immediately after her check-
Roderick gave a curt nod, his eyes still fixed on the bewildered
boy.
Once Kirsten was gone, he continued his questioning. “What
else did your mother say?”
“Nothing really,” Kevin answered, attempting a casual shrug. He
peeked at the wall clock.
“Daddy, I’ll be late.”
Roderick saw through the boy’s attempt to escape the
uncomfortable conversation.
Kevin couldn’t even tell the time yet.
Chapter 34
He wondered, “Not strong enough?
“Too weak to be a builder?
“What kind of nonsense did Madeleine fill our son’s head with?
“And since when was I weak? During our intimate moments,
she was always the one pleading for me to stop.
“Unless…”
His expression darkened.
He wondered again, “Did she sleep with Edward?
