Chapter 51
Madeleine wanted to pinch the bridge of her own nose.
Now she finally understood why her father’s company had
collapsed.
With a love–struck daughter like her, how could it not?
If that was the case, the way the four girls treated her all made
sense.
After all, according to Gerry’s words earlier, the four handled the
company’s most critical files.
“I see.”
Madeleine nodded, her face dimming, her voice muffled.
“Go on with your work. I won’t bother you.”
She turned back to her own desk.
The secretaries exchanged looks, not daring to make a sound.
Madeleine stared in the direction of Roderick’s office, a strange

feeling stirring in her heart.
Roderick clearly knew about her disgraceful actions in the past.
So why had he still allowed her to come work here?
Was it trust, or was he setting a trap, waiting for her to take the
bait?
She passed the afternoon in questions.
Fortunately, Gerry came by and gave her some filing tasks.
It wasn’t difficult, and with Madeleine’s quick–witted nature, she
got the hang of it in no time.
The Livingston Group strictly followed a nine–to–six working
schedule. Employees got off work at six, but those who stayed
until eight received overtime pay, dinner reimbursement, and
cab fare.
When Madeleine left, more than half the staff were still
working. The moment she stepped out, the tense secretaries
finally relaxed.
“Ugh, life’s unfair. I wish I could treat work like Mrs. Livingston,
as just a pastime.”
Chapter 51
“Forget it, we’re just wage slaves.”
“But don’t you think Mrs. Livingston isn’t as unreasonable as
people say? She seems pretty easygoing.”
“Yeah… I’m even starting to doubt those rumors that she
stormed in last time and fought with Mr. Livingston.”
The four whispered among themselves, unaware of the figure
approaching from behind.
Suddenly, a stern female voice rang out.
“You’re staying late to gossip?”
All four jumped, scrambling to their feet.
“Good evening, Ms. Whitman.”
The woman before them wore a Chanel couture suit. It was low-
key luxury, matched with elegant jewelry, exuding sophistication
from head to toe.
She was the daughter of a major shareholder and the company’s Chief Operating Officer, overseeing overall
operations and business management. Aside from Roderick, she was the only one with authority over the group’s finances.
Chapter 51
But hadn’t Ms. Whitman been away on a business trip? Why
was she suddenly back?
Rebecca Whitman’s face was stern, her gaze landing on the
empty desk where Madeleine had been.
Catching on, Teresa quickly said, “Mrs. Livingston has already
left for the day.”
Rebecca gave a sharp, cold snort.
“So she really did come here just to idle away her time.”
Her eyes narrowed, her voice dropping icily. “You’re holding the
company’s most important files. Keep your eyes wide open. If I
find out anything leaks from your hands, none of you will keep
your jobs.”
The warning made all four secretaries flinch. They hurried to
nod frantically.
With that, Rebecca turned and strode toward Roderick’s office.
She had told Roderick that she would come to report to him
right after her trip. When she saw Roderick still waiting for her,
she arched a satisfied brow.
Chapter 51
“I thought you’d have gone home early with your wife.”
Her words were sharp and mean, carrying a sense of hostility.
Roderick closed the file in front of him, pretending not to notice
the sarcasm.
“You said you had a report. Go on.”
“No rush. I’ve made a written version and sent it to your email.”
Rebecca pulled out the chair opposite him, narrowed her eyes, and leaned forward suddenly.
“My father knows an astrologer. I think he’s good. Want me to
