Her parents had often said in public that Roderick was their ideal son–in–law, while Roderick’s own parents. had openly
stated that, given the chance, they hoped the two families could
be joined by marriage.
Clearly, few people believed in Roderick and Madeleine’s
marriage. Most assumed divorce was inevitable since the two
seemed to be living a life separately.
Rebecca leaned closer with a mischievous grin.
“Why don’t you just do what everyone expects? Divorce your
wife? I don’t mind you being a divorcé.”
Roderick knew she was joking and didn’t take it seriously.
More than anyone, he understood that Rebecca had no feelings
for him. Her heart belonged to someone else she had never
been able to let go of.
All these years, to avoid her parents‘ nagging, she had only
pretended to pine after him.
If anyone was a shield, he was Rebecca’s.
Chapter 52
“Alright, enough joking. What exactly are you thinking about?
Madeleine’s desperate to hollow out the company and hand it
over to Edward, and you still let her come work here?”
Roderick frowned.
“She’s changed.”
“Changed?” Rebecca sneered. “Changed for the worse, you
mean? Not only out to hollow out the company, but you, too?”
She clicked her tongue.
“Roderick, let me remind you. You may be Chairman and CEO,
but the company doesn’t belong solely to you. My family owns a
sizeable stake as well!”
Her message was clear. Whatever games he and his wife
played in private were their business, but they could not drag the company down with them.
“Relax. She won’t. She doesn’t have the ability.”
“She might not, but Edward does! In just a few years, he’s
become our biggest rival.”
Rebecca folded her arms with disgust. “I can’t stand that man.
Chapter 52
What on earth does your wife see in him?”
The office chilled to freezing.
Rebecca realized she had touched Roderick’s sorest nerve and
coughed awkwardly.
“I didn’t mean it like that… Don’t take it to heart. Maybe one day
she’ll come to her senses, right?”
She sighed dramatically. “When I first met you, how did I not
see you were such a lovesick man? Clinging to the same
woman for so many years, Roderick, sometimes I actually
admire you.”
She tutted twice. “But if Madeleine never falls for you in this
lifetime, are you planning to chain her to you forever?”
After a long silence, Roderick suddenly spoke, telling Rebecca
about Madeleine’s amnesia.
Rebecca’s eyes widened in shock.
“Are you crazy or just stupid? You actually believe that
nonsense?”
Roderick pressed his lips together. He had known she wouldn’t
Chapter 52
believe him.
“Really, Mr. Livingston? Such a cliché? You’ve truly let love cloud
your brain. Do you realize how serious the consequences would
be if she’s faking it?”
Roderick stayed silent.
Rebecca crossed her arms, her tone grave. “If I get evidence
that she’s a corporate spy, I won’t hesitate to send her straight
to the police. Roderick, if you want to protect her, don’t let her
stay in the company.”
In the end, this was what Rebecca had wanted to say all along.
The reason she had rushed back was that she had learned
Madeleine had joined the company.
She didn’t care how foolish that woman was in other matters,
but she would never let her endanger the company.
Roderick lifted his gaze, his deep eyes locking with Rebecca’s.
“If she really did such a thing, I’ll bear all the consequences.”
“You’ll bear it?”
Rebecca shot to her feet in fury.
Chapter 52
He must have lost his mind.
“Fine, fine. I’ll wait for you to take responsibility. Best case, you leave the company, and I take your place.”
