That evening, Elise went to the guesthouse with Jessica, Madeline, and the two children.
Upon learning that they were heading back to North City the next day to get a divorce, Mrs. Shaw raised her wine glass and cheered, "This is the absolute best birthday gift I’ve received all year!"
Amused, Elise raised her glass of juice and clinked it against Mrs. Shaw’s, using juice as a proxy for wine.
Mrs. Shaw drained her glass in one gulp, cheerfully urging everyone to eat and drink. She then sat down beside Elise and whispered, "Have you really made up your mind?"
"Yes." Elise offered a gentle smile, her beautiful eyes perfectly serene. "I made up my mind a long time ago."
"Good. As long as you know what you want, I’m fully behind you!"
Mrs. Shaw raised her glass again and lightly clinked it against Elise’s. "Just take a symbolic sip. Drinking too much juice late at night isn’t good for a pregnant woman anyway. I’ll finish mine!" With that, she downed another glass.
Elise chuckled. "Don’t drink too much yourself. Hangovers are miserable."
"Don’t worry—none of them combined could outdrink me!"
Hearing that, Elise didn’t bother pressing further. Mrs. Shaw’s alcohol tolerance was indeed formidable.
The night ended with both Madeline and Jessica thoroughly intoxicated.
Sam drove them back to her villa.
With Madeline and Jessica sitting in the back, the two drunk women rambled endlessly. Only then did Elise realize Jessica was surprisingly rowdy when drunk. Typically quiet and refined, alcohol turned her into a chatterbox spilling all sorts of gossip.
Even so, her professional ethics remained intact; she didn’t reveal a single detail about her patients, choosing instead to spill secrets about her own family.
Madeline laughed hysterically and returned the favor by entering ’self-destruct mode’, going so far as to confess to pulling down Aaron’s pants when they were kids.
The two intoxicated women bonded so deeply it felt as though they regretted not drinking together sooner.
Driving the car, Sam nearly suffered internal injuries from holding back his laughter.
Elise laughed so hard her stomach began to ache, though the two children slept soundly through it all, completely undisturbed.
The car glided smoothly through the night.
Eventually, the noisy pair in the back grew exhausted and fell asleep with their heads leaning against each other.
Elise leaned back in her seat, gently stroking her belly. The baby inside gave a gentle kick every now and then, almost as if interacting with her.
At ten in the evening, the car pulled up to the villa gates.
Elise opened the door and stepped out slowly.
Nearly five months pregnant, her baby bump could no longer be hidden under loose dresses. As she walked, her hand instinctively supported her lower back, which throbbed with a familiar dull ache—a lingering issue from her previous twin pregnancy. As the baby grew larger by the day, the back pain had only grown worse.
Having worn themselves out playing earlier, the two children were sound asleep.
With Elise heavily pregnant and Jessica and Madeline thoroughly drunk, Sam and Mrs. Lander each carried a sleeping child inside.
Standing by the car, Elise gently roused Madeline and Jessica. "We’re home."
Jessica had a slightly higher tolerance than Madeline, and after her short nap, she was mostly sober.
"Madeline, wake up!" She slapped Madeline’s arm with a crisp, loud smack that made Elise wince just listening to it. Given the girl’s hand strength, she had clearly taken self-defense classes.
Thoroughly drunk, Madeline felt no pain from the harsh slap. She sat up groggily, blinking at her surroundings. "Mm... is it morning already?"
"It’s not morning yet!" Jessica poked her forehead. "We’re home. Get inside and back to bed."
"Oh, right!" Muddled, Madeline stumbled out of the car with Jessica supporting her.
