Chapter 124
The hospital room was so quiet you could hear the rhythmic beeping of the medical equipment. Ryan Walker lay in the bed, his eyelashes still, his pale face almost translucent under the lights.
Clara Bennett’s gaze lingered on his arm, wrapped in thick bandages, and her grip tightened on her phone.
After spending so much time and energy to finally obtain the evidence from Anthony Parker, she really wanted to witness Diane Bennett’s arrest and avenge her mother.
But Ryan Walker was injured because of her, triggering his genetic condition, and he couldn’t even manage to stay awake, needing someone by his side even more.
“Detective Evans.”
Clara’s voice was slightly hoarse, barely noticeable.“I can’t leave here. I’d appreciate it if you could keep me updated on the situation.”
“Alright.”
Chris Evans readily agreed, “I’ll give you a call with any updates.”
After hanging up, Clara walked over and sat by the bed, watching the unconscious Ryan.
It struck her that, without her realizing it, Ryan Walker had become so important to her.
Bennett family home.
The red and blue lights of the police cars cut through the quiet morning.
Diane Bennett’s heart leaped at the sound of sirens, causing her hand holding the milk to tremble.
“What’s going on?”
Richard Bennett set down his tablet, looking at the butler.
The butler, equally clueless, went out of the dining room to investigate. Before he even reached the hall, Chris Evans walked in with several officers.
“Diane Bennett is suspected of commissioning murder. We’re here to arrest her in accordance with the law. Please cooperate.”
Chris flashed his badge, sidestepped the butler, and headed straight into the dining room. Spotting Diane, he gave a nod to the officers
behind him.
Several officers understood and moved to handcuff Diane.
Seeing the arrest warrant in the officers‘ hands, Diane’s face turned ashen. She tried to remain composed, “Officers, there must be some mistake! I’ve been at home. I haven’t done anything illegal.”
“Diane Bennett.”
Chris stepped forward, his gaze sharp, and held out a recording.
“This is key evidence provided by Anthony Parker. It clearly records you instructing Mr. Clark to cause the car accident and murder Linda Bennett back then, as well as your subsequent threats to Anthony to keep him silent. Do you have anything to say?”
“Impossible!”
Diane glanced at Richard, “Richard, you believe me, I didn’t do it!”

Richard was stunned when he heard Chris’s words.
Wasn’t Linda’s car accident caused by Clara’s crying and distracting her?
What does Diane have to do with it?
Victor reacted even faster, his anger ignited by the thought of last night’s phone call with Clara.

He was convinced that Clara was behind all this. He stepped forward, shielding Diane, and forced a smile.“Officer, there must be some kind of misunderstanding. We know what kind of person Aunt Bennett is.”
“Did Clara call the police?”
He pointed to his church.“She thinks we’ve blamed her for our mother’s car accident all these years.”
“And she resents that her mother and she left the Bennett family because of Aunt Bennett, so she always believed Aunt Bennett was involved in her mother’s accident.”
“These documents might even be forged by her. You need to investigate thoroughly and not be fooled by her.”
Victor’s words brought Richard back to his senses. The doubt in his eyes faded as he considered the possibility, and his face darkened.“Officer, is it not a bit rash to convict my wife based solely on a recording of dubious origin?”
“We have a complete chain of evidence, not just the recording.”
Chris had heard Clara talk about this father and son to some extent. Hearing their words, he sighed inwardly at their foolishness, maintained a neutral expression, and gestured for the officers to move forward again.
“Diane Bennett, you need to come with us. If you have anything to say, you can say it at the Police Station.”
Victor Bennett reached out, trying to stop the officers.“Don’t you dare take Aunt Bennett! You can’t just arrest someone without solid evidence!”
“Mr. Bennett, please cooperate. Obstructing law enforcement has legal consequences.”
Chris Evans’s tone turned cold, a flash of severity in his eyes.
Seizing the opportunity, the officers moved forward, pulling out handcuffs to restrain Diane Bennett.
Knowing that she was likely facing inescapable doom this time, Diane Bennett suppressed her fear and stood up.“Don’t make things difficult for them. I’ll go to the Police Station with you.”
Her eyes red, she looked at the Bennett father and son, her voice sorrowful.“Take care of yourselves while I’m gone. And Olivia, too. She’s all alone overseas, Victor. As her older brother, you need to look after her.”
“As for Clara Bennett… don’t blame her. She’s suffered a lot over the years.”
“If
you
have the chance… talk to her. Don’t let her be blinded by hatred.”
Watching Diane Bennett being forcibly escorted out the door and into a police car, Richard Bennett and Victor Bennett’s faces turned
ashen.
“Dad, look!”
Dad, look!” Victor’s chest heaved with rage as he pointed towards the door. “This is clearly Clara’s revenge! Getting the shares wasn’t enough for her; she wouldn’t be satisfied until she drove Aunt Bennett to ruin!”
“Call Brian Sun and tell him to stop the share transfer to Clara,” Richard ordered, his face ashen.
Richard’s face was so dark it seemed like it could drip with water as he grabbed his phone and dialed Clara’s number.
“I’ll ask this wicked thing myself what she’s trying to do!”

In the hospital room, Clara’s phone rang insistently, the name “Richard Bennett” flashing on the screen. She glanced at it, a flicker of mockery in her eyes.
It seemed Diane had already been taken in for questioning by Chris Evans. Richard calling now probably meant he didn’t believe the evidence Chris had.
Even now, they were still siding with Diane, still thinking she was seeking revenge.
Without hesitation, Clara pressed the reject button, then silenced her phone.
She didn’t want to argue with this pair of deluded men anymore; every word would be a waste of breath.
Diane’s fate was what she deserved and had nothing to do with anyone else.
Just then, the hospital room door was gently pushed open, and Benjamin walked in, holding a small figure by the hand.
Lila Walker, dressed in a pink dress and sporting pigtails, still had tear tracks on her face. She broke free from Benjamin’s grasp the moment they entered, rushing to the bedside. The little girl leaned against the bed, her small body trembling as she choked out, “Daddy! Daddy, wake up!”
Clara quickly rose, kneeling to steady Lila’s shaking shoulders, gently comforting her, “Lila, don’t worry. Daddy’s just sleeping. He’ll
wake up soon.”
“Really?”
Lila looked up, her little face streaked with tears, her big eyes filled with worry.“Uncle Benjamin said Daddy was hurt, really bad. Is it
true?”
Clara felt a sharp pang in her heart, and she nodded, fighting back the ache.“Daddy is hurt, but the doctors have done their best. If he rests well, he’ll get better soon.”
Benjamin stood to the side, sighing.“I contacted Commander Evans as soon as I got your call. He takes this very seriously and already sent a military doctor over.”
”
“Thank you.”
Clara nodded.
Benjamin rubbed his nose, feeling a bit guilty for keeping his connection with Ryan Walker a secret from Clara.
“Auntie, will Daddy wake up once the army doctors get here?”
Hearing that, Clara stroked Lila’s hair, a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. After a long pause, she finally said, “Your dad has a mutated gene in his body. He needs a healthy stem cell transplant to get better.”
Seeing Lila’s bewildered expression, Clara closed her eyes briefly, gritted her teeth, and blurted out the words she’d been mulling over all night.
“These stem cells… they have to come from a blood relative. Lila, would you be willing to donate stem cells for your dad?”
Knowing the question was too cruel for a child of her age, she didn’t dare look at Lila.
“But… but I’m not Daddy’s biological daughter.”
Lila’s tears started flowing again, her little hands clutching Clara’s sleeve tightly as she choked out, “Is it… is it because I’m not his real daughter that he can’t wake up?”
Clara froze, her pupils contracting sharply as she stared at Lila in disbelief.

Lila wasn’t Ryan Walker’s biological daughter?
Menu
“Lila’s parents both died on the battlefield. Ryan Walker was close to her parents, and when he saw she was all alone, he adopted her
Benjamin knew about this. Seeing Clara’s shocked expression, he explained, “Ryan has always treated her like his own, and he’s never clarified the situation to the outside world.”
Clara’s mind went blank. She recalled the first time she saw Ryan and Lila together; Ryan had indeed mentioned that Lila’s mother had died in battle.
She’d seen Ryan struggling to do Lila’s hair, his movements clumsy, and had just assumed he was recently widowed and not yet used to
- it.
Never in a million years did she think Lila wasn’t his biological child!
If she had known, she wouldn’t have said those things to Lila just now, scaring her for nothing!
Thinking this,
After a moment of shock, Clara forced herself to calm down. She held the sobbing Lila and comforted her, “Of course not. Even if you’re not his biological daughter, I’ll find another way to save your dad.”
“Really?”
Lila sniffled and looked up at Clara.
A pang of sympathy shot through Clara’s heart. Fighting back tears, she playfully touched Lila’s nose.“Of course, it’s true. When have I ever lied to you?”
If Lila wasn’t biologically related, then Ryan’s only blood relatives were Ethan and Lucas.
Lucas was about the same age as Lila, and even though Ethan had already broken her heart, she didn’t want Lucas to donate stem cells unless it was absolutely necessary.
That left… Ethan!
With that thought, Clara released Lila, stood up, a glimmer of hope in her eyes, took out her phone, and dialed Ethan’s number.
“Ms. Bennett.”
“David?”
Hearing David’s voice, Clara was surprised. Ethan usually didn’t let anyone touch his phone unless it was an emergency.
“Where’s Ethan? I need to speak to him urgently. Put him on the phone.”
“Mr. Carter is currently unavailable to take calls.”
David glanced at Ethan, who was lying on the bed, unconscious from drinking, and said helplessly, “After being dismissed, Mr. Carter has been staying at the Old Estate. If Ms. Bennett has something urgent, perhaps you could come over and speak in person.
Since leaving the National Security Agency and returning to the Old Estate, Ethan had been drinking heavily, and David’s advice was falling on deaf ears.
He was debating whether to call Clara and ask her to come to the Old Estate to talk to Ethan when she called first.
“Okay.”
Hanging up, Clara turned to Benjamin and said, “Mr. Hayes, I…”
“Go ahead, I’ve got things covered here.”

Seeing her anxious expression, Benjamin knew she wanted Ethan to agree to the stem cell transplant for Ryan. Naturally, he wouldn’t stop her. “I’ll make the arrangements when the military doctor arrives. Don’t worry.”
“Thank you.”
Clara lowered her head and stroked Lila’s hair.“Lila, be a good girl and wait here for Auntie to come back, okay? Auntie will definitely bring good news, alright?”
Lila nodded obediently, then, as if thinking of something, she gripped Clara’s fingers tightly.“Auntie, don’t force yourself. If Uncle Carter makes things difficult for you…”
She paused, then finally bit her lip and said, “Don’t agree to him. In my and Dad’s hearts, you’re the most important person.”
“If you save Dad by agreeing to something weird with Uncle Carter, even if Dad wakes up, he won’t be happy.”
“Okay.”
Clara replied, not daring to look at Lila any longer. She turned and hurried out of the hospital room, covering her mouth and crying silently.
If Lila were her child, that would be wonderful. If… if she had married Ryan Walker from the start, that would be wonderful.
When Clara arrived at the Carter Estate, David was already waiting at the gate.
“Mrs. Carter.”
Seeing Clara get out of the car, David quickly stepped forward to greet her.
“Where’s Ethan?”
Clara smiled at David.
No matter how much she and Ethan argued, David had always treated her with respect.
“Mr. Carter just woke up.”
“Just woke up?”
Clara paused in her tracks.
“Yes.”
David led her to the master bedroom upstairs.“With the successive incidents involving Madam and the company, Mr. Carter has been drowning his sorrows in alcohol every day…”
Hearing this, a flash of mockery flickered in Clara’s eyes.
Over the years, she had been by Ethan’s side, watching him step by step, seize control of Carter Group from the encirclement and suppression of those old foxes. He wasn’t the kind of person to be defeated by such things.
The sorrows he drowned in alcohol probably weren’t about the company or Margaret.
More likely, it was because he had allowed his wife to be a surrogate for Natalie, his first love, and used his position as Chairman of Carter Group to give Natalie so many advantages, only to be played like a fiddle by her in the end, right?
The thought of the sincerity she had once invested in him made Clara feel a sense of irony.
Indeed, those who betray true hearts deserve to swallow a thousand silver needles.
He had betrayed her sincerity, and he was now getting his retribution in Natalie!

Entering the master bedroom, Clara saw Ethan at a glance.
Menu
He was sitting in a grand armchair by the window, sunlight streaming through the carved latticework, outlining the sharp angles of his face. His gaze was deep, carrying a subtle air of languor and detachment.
Hearing footsteps, Ethan looked up, his eyes landing on Clara. There was no surprise in his expression, only a faint scrutiny. “What are you doing here?”
“Seeing if I’m as miserable as you thought I’d be?”
“Is that my doing?”
Clara settled into the armchair beside him, her eyes calm and still.
There had been countless times she’d wished Ethan dead, but seeing him so dejected now, she didn’t feel the satisfaction she’d expected.
She had no interest in exchanging pleasantries. She cut straight to the point:“The genetic disease your grandfather had, Ryan Walker
has it too.”
“This recent injury triggered an acute episode. He needs stem cells from a blood relative to survive.”
She looked at Ethan, her gaze earnest.“You’re his half–brother, the only one with a chance of being a match.”
“I’m asking you to go to the hospital and get tested. If you’re a match, donate your stem cells and save his life.”
Ethan’s expression didn’t change in the slightest, as if he’d heard nothing more than a trivial matter. A mocking smile played on his lips.“What do I care if Ryan Walker lives or dies?”
“You’re half–brothers, after all.”
Hearing this, Ethan felt a sharp pain in his chest, and his eyes finally flickered with emotion.
He seemed to remember saying something similar to Clara once. He hadn’t thought much of it then, but now, it sounded incredibly
jarring.
“Brothers? He’s just a bastard. Does he even deserve the title?”
Ethan scoffed, his eyes turning cold.“Clara, you’re my wife, yet you want me to save another man. What makes you think I’d ever agree to that?”
Clara wasn’t naive enough to think Ethan would agree easily. “I’ve already reported the surrogacy to the Police Station. If you’re willing to save Ryan Walker, I’ll go and drop the case.”
It was the biggest concession she could make.
However, Ethan shook his head, his eyes growing even darker. “Not enough.”
Clara was taken aback.“What else do you want?”
“I want you to drop the divorce petition and have another child.”
Ethan’s voice was commanding, brooking no argument.“Continue being my Mrs. Carter, and stay by my side.”
“Impossible.”
Clara shook her head without a moment’s hesitation.“Ethan, we can never be husband and wife again.”
“You know very well that there’s no love between us anymore. Even if I stay with you, I’ll just be an empty shell. What’s the point of that?”
“Whether there’s a point or not is for me to decide.”

Ethan’s smile was nonchalant. “Clara, you have no choice.”
“You probably don’t know yet, but neither Lucas nor I are suitable matches for him.”
“Because we both carry defective genes. If you want to save him, you’ll have to have another healthy child with me.”
“Use that child’s stem cells to save him, to save me and Lucas.”
Hearing this, Clara staggered slightly, her hand on her knee clenched tightly.
His words were like a sharp blade, stabbing fiercely into Clara’s heart.
On one side was Ryan’s life, and on the other was the freedom she had longed for.
Menu
She was tired of living a life controlled by Ethan. She finally had the chance to divorce. Did she have to go back to those dark days again?
She looked at Ethan’s handsome but hard face, knowing that everything he said was true. With Ethan’s pride, he wouldn’t bother lying to her about this.
But the thought of returning to Ethan’s side, of resuming that empty charade of being Mrs. Carter, was unbearable.
“So? Have you made up your mind?”
Ethan’s voice held a note of urgency.“Ryan doesn’t have much time. You can’t afford to drag this out.”
Clara’s heart felt like it was being crushed in an invisible fist, the pain almost stealing her breath.
She closed her eyes, and images flashed through her mind: Ryan throwing himself in front of the knife for her, his lifeless form lying in the hospital bed, Lila’s tear–streaked face begging her to save her dad.
She couldn’t let Ryan die.
She opened her mouth to speak, but then Lila’s words from before she left echoed in her mind.
“Aunt Clara, you’re the most important person to me and Dad. Please don’t agree to anything weird Uncle Carter says.”
Clara fell silent, and after a long pause, she finally said, “Let me think about it.”
“Fine.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened, he wasn’t blind to her hesitation.
And it was precisely because he saw her hesitation that a knot of resentment tightened in his chest.
He hadn’t realized how much Ryan Walker meant to Clara!
The shrill ring of his cell phone broke the tense silence in the study.
“Clara!”
Ben’s voice crackled through the phone, hurried and bubbling with barely contained excitement. “The military doctors are at the hospital! They’re treating Ryan, and the doctor says he’ll wake up once they’re done!”
