Chapter 131
Hanging up, Richard fumed over Victor’s words, growing angrier with each passing moment.
“Sentimental fool! Doesn’t he realize that if Bennett Group goes bankrupt, what will he have left to compensate Clara with?”
He violently swept a teapot off his desk, sending it crashing to the floor, shattering into pieces, tea splattering everywhere.
He stood up and paced back and forth in his study, hands clasped behind his back, his brow furrowed in frustration.
Victor’s indecisiveness had exhausted his patience. It seemed he would have to take matters into his own hands to get Clara to drop the
case.
Richard Bennett walked to his desk, picked up the phone, and dialed Eric Clark’s number, instructing, “Compile all the evidence of Robert Anderson’s previous violations at Anderson Industries. I need to see everything by noon tomorrow.”
The person on the other end of the line responded, “Yes, Mr. Bennett, I’ll get to it right away and deliver it to you first thing tomorrow
morning.”
“Okay.”
Richard hung up the phone, his eyes cold and ruthless.
Clara, don’t blame your father for being cruel. Blame yourself for being too stubborn and out of touch.
For the sake of the Bennett family’s safety, I have no choice but to wrong you.
Bennett Group is the lifeblood of generations of the Bennett family. No matter the cost, he had to protect it.

Meanwhile, at the Carter Estate, the lights blazed.
Various documents were scattered on the coffee table in the living room. The ashtray was overflowing with cigarette butts, and the air was thick with the heavy scent of tobacco.
Ethan Carter sat on the sofa, still wearing the suit he had on during the day, his tie loosely hanging around his neck, his eyes fixed on the divorce mediation proposal on the table with a dark and sinister look.
In the document, Clara’s demands were clear and concise. As a victim of surrogacy, she not only wanted a divorce but also demanded the majority of the couple’s joint property.
This filled Ethan with an unprecedented surge of anger.
Clara actually thought she could get rid of him so easily and marry Ryan Walker?
She was dreaming!
“Clara, you won’t get a divorce!”
Ethan roared under his breath, slamming the documents on the table, scattering papers everywhere.
Then, he grabbed his phone and dialed a number.“Hey, help me dig up some information on a woman named Vivian Hayes, I’ll send you her details. I need you to check out her current family situation.”
He remembered that Vivian and Clara were close. Besides Mia, she was the only person Clara had consistently kept in touch with over
the
years.

Now she was working at Anderson Industries, as Clara’s assistant.
Clara had proof of him making her a surrogate. If he wanted to get leverage to threaten Clara, Vivian was a good place to start.
The person on the other end of the line responded.“Mr. Carter, what do you want to know about her for?”
“Just do it.”
Ethan’s voice was tinged with a touch of obsessive madness. He would never just divorce Clara like this!
He and Clara had been married for seven years. Although it wasn’t public, Clara was his wife, she belonged to Ethan Canter.
Now, she dared to betray him and choose that sickly Ryan Walker. This was something he could never tolerate.

The next morning, Evan Taylor arrived at the airport with twenty bodyguards just as dawn was breaking.
He divided them into four groups, stationing them at key points such as the exits, parking lot, and VIP pass, meticulously scanning the surroundings for any suspicious individuals.
He stood at the arrival gate himself, photo in hand, waiting for Anthony Parker and Nathan Lewis.
Inside a hospital room, Clara Bennett watched as Ryan Walker deliberately smoothed out the wrinkles in his shirt.
Sensing her gaze, Ryan looked over and smiled.“Don’t worry. Even if the matching results aren’t good, we’ll still have other options.”
As for the news that day…
Ryan wasn’t too concerned. Even though Kevin was a military doctor and had trained with the troops for so many years, he trusted Kevin’s skills. Besides, Evan was there too.
“Okay.”
Clara nodded, not saying much more.
She was just waiting for Nathan to arrive at the hospital, rest up, and then provide a sample for matching.
If the matching situation wasn’t ideal, she would proceed with in vitro fertilization.
No matter what, she had prepared herself mentally.
At ten past ten, Kevin texted:“Nathan and I are off the plane and coming through the VIP. All clear.”
Ryan’s heart, which had been pounding in his chest, finally eased. He swung his legs over the side of the hospital bed and headed into the small changing room to get dressed. “I’m going to pick them up.”
“Where are you meeting Victor Bennett? I’ll drive you.”
“No need, I can go by myself.”
Clara Bennett watched Ryan Walker’s movements through the gap in the curtain, her face flushed, and she quickly looked away.
“It’s on my way.”
Ryan Walker moved quickly, changed his clothes, came out, wrapped his arm around Clara Bennett’s shoulders, and headed out of the
room.
Just then, Ryan Walker’s phone rang suddenly. It was Kevin Keller, his voice laced with panic.

“Stone, he’s gone!”
“What?”
Ryan Walker frowned. “How could he be gone?”
“This is my fault, I was careless.”

Kevin Keller’s voice was full of self–reproach.“We met Evan Taylor at the arrival gate. He said he needed to use the restroom, and your
men and I waited outside.”
“But after ten minutes, he still hadn’t come out. We went in to check, and he was gone. The bathroom window was open; he must have
climbed out and ran.”
Clara Bennett was standing right next to Ryan Walker when the call came in. Kevin Keller’s words reached her ears, and her heart tightened.
Nathan Lewis ran away?
Did he suddenly regret it and change his mind, so he ran?
“It’s okay, we’ll find him. And even if we don’t, we still have time. We’ll just find someone else suitable.”
Seeing Clara’s pale face, Ryan instead calmed down and comforted her, “Don’t panic, let’s think of something. Maybe he’s just scared
and left on his own.”
“Maybe he’ll reappear once he figures things out.”
With that, he sent a message to Evan.
“Immediately seal off the airport, retrieve the surveillance footage around the restroom, contact airport security, and do everything to
find the candidate.”
“Also, check his identification information to see if he’s bought tickets for other flights or booked a hotel.”
Clara knew how small the chances were of finding a new match if Nathan didn’t cooperate.
She wanted to tell Ryan to forget it and just do IVF, but before she could say the words, her phone rang.
“Clara, I’m already at the coffee shop near the hospital. When are you coming?”
Victor’s voice came from the other end of the line.
Clara glanced at Ryan and said, “Wait for me, I can’t leave right now.”
“What could be more important than your mother?”
Victor asked, puzzled, “Clara, just come over. I’ll be done in ten minutes, it won’t take up too much of your time.”
“Go ahead.”
Ryan didn’t want his affairs to interfere with Clara’s: “I’ll be fine.”
Clara knew exactly what Ryan was thinking. She bit back her own anxieties and said, “Okay, I’m on my way.”
At the coffee shop near the hospital entrance, Victor was seated by the window, an untouched coffee in front of him.

He was dressed in a dark suit, his face grave. Seeing Clara enter, he immediately stood up
“Clara, have a seat.”
Victor gestured to the seat opposite him.

to greet her.
Clara wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries. She cut straight to the chase:“What is this about?”
Victor pulled a file from his briefcase and handed it to Clara.“This is what I found. A week before Mom’s accident, someone named Kevin Reynolds transferred millions of dollars into Diane’s account.”
“And I’ve heard that name–Kevin Reynolds–from Eric Clark, Dad’s personal assistant.”
Clara took the file, her face darkening as she scanned the bank statements.
“Are you saying Diane had someone behind her, and that person even planted someone close to Richard?”
Victor nodded. “It’s possible.”
“Diane might just be a pawn. The one who really wanted to hurt Mom might be that person.”
He paused, his eyes filled with inner conflict, before finally adding, “It’s also possible that Dad is the one behind Diane.”
“Why would he do that?”
A sharp pain shot through Clara’s heart.
Clara remembered a time before Diane Bennett and Olivia showed up, when Linda and Richard had a good marriage.
Richard was always seen as a good husband and a good father.
That’s why Diane and Olivia’s arrival hit Linda so hard.
Clara thought back to when she and her mother first came to Chicago, living in that brownstone, and the sadness in her mother’s eyes as she tried to move on from Richard’s betrayal.
She remembered how her mother used to look at Richard when Clara was little.
Her mother loved him so much. How could Richard have hurt her like that?
“It’s just a theory,” Victor said.
Seeing the pain in Clara’s eyes, he didn’t want to make the already strained relationship between father and daughter any worse.
He quickly added, “It’s possible Dad was manipulated and didn’t know what was going on.”
“But I found out that twenty years ago, the Bennett Group had a deal with a company overseas called QJ, and something seems off
about it.”
“This Kevin Reynolds was the CEO of that company back then.”
“Clara, trust me, I’ll get to the bottom of all this.”
Victor watched Clara’s face, then hesitated before saying, “Oh, and Dad keeps asking me to talk you out of pursuing the case.” Seeing a flash of impatience cross Clara’s face, Ryan quickly interjected, “Of course, I know you’d never drop the case.” “But I’m worried Dad might do something drastic to force your hand. You need to be careful.”

Clara raised an eyebrow at that.
Had Victor Bennett really changed his tune?

First, he was actively investigating the truth behind what happened back then, and now he was warning her to watch out for Richard.
Wasn’t he going to accuse her of not considering the bigger picture, of not thinking about the Bennett Group anymore?
Catching the surprise in Clara’s eyes, Victor felt his ears burn and said awkwardly, “I saw Diane’s statement and the evidence the police provided.”
“Clara, we share the same blood. Your mother was my mother too.”
“Before… I was wrong to blame you.”
“You were right. Growing up in the Bennett family, I lost myself in Diane’s superficial concern and forgot my mother’s pain.”
He gave a self–deprecating chuckle.“I even forgot that Mom divorced Dad and left the Bennett family with you because Olivia came along.”
“I was an idiot. I transferred all my concern and affection for you to Olivia.”
“And I forgot the promises I once made to you and Mom.”
“Clara, I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m just asking if you could be a little less cold towards me in the future?”
He offered a wry smile.“The fact that you even answered my call yesterday, and agreed to meet me today, means the world to me.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve already hired a private investigator to track down Kevin Reynolds. I’ve also got people looking into that deal from twenty years ago. We should have something by tonight.”
“If… if it turns out Dad is behind Diane, and you want to press charges, I won’t stand in your way.”
Hearing Victor’s words, Clara felt a mix of emotions.
There was a time when she had longed for the affection of her older brother.
But their bond had been shattered after that slap at their mother’s funeral.
She glanced at the trees outside the window and nodded softly.“Okay, I’ll wait to hear from you.”
With that, she grabbed her bag and left the coffee shop.
Before she even reached the hospital, her phone rang.
Clara pulled her phone out of her bag and saw an unfamiliar number.
After a moment’s hesitation, she answered it.
“Clara, long time no see.”
“I’m back in the States. Surprised?”
Hearing the voice on the other end, Clara raised an eyebrow. “Olivia Bennett, you dare come back?”
