Chapter 143
“What did you say?”
Hearing the officer’s words, Chris felt a throbbing in his churchs.
The young officer’s forehead was covered in large beads of sweat, which streamed down his cheeks, creating a small dark patch on the
collar of his uniform.
“Detective Evans, we checked the room carefully when our shift changed.”
“Daniel was still unconscious then, and the EKG monitor showed a steady reading.”
“We only turned away to sign the paperwork in the hallway, five minutes tops, and when we turned back… the room was empty!”
“The security bars…”
The officer swallowed hard, his voice barely audible.“The security bars on the window of his room were cut open with tools. The cuts were clean. It must have been planned in advance…”
“Damn it!”
The curse slammed into the air as Chris punched the wall next to him.
The dull thud shook the wall, causing dust to fall. His knuckles instantly turned red, but the sharp pain did nothing to quell the agitation in his heart.
Richard Bennett was barely cold, and Quinn was the only lead they had left–now he was gone!
So many people were tied to that illegal organ trafficking case from twenty years ago. How was he supposed to face the victims? How could he report this to his superiors?
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.“He’s injured. He couldn’t have gotten far.”
“Pull up all the hospital’s security footage immediately. Focus on Quinn’s floor, the stairwells, elevators, and the back entrances!”
“Contact the Department of Transportation. Block off all roads within a two–mile radius of the hospital. Check every suspicious vehicle and find out how he got away!”
“Also, notify every precinct and station. Full alert. Put out an APB on Quinn. If he’s spotted, report it immediately. Be careful–he’s slippery and possibly armed!”
The officer didn’t waste a second, grabbing his walkie–talkie to relay the orders.
Chris glanced toward the ICU ward, something suddenly occurring to him. He quietly ordered, “Keep a close eye on Olivia Bennett. Quinn might try to contact her.”
“Yes, sir.”
The officer left to get things moving, brushing past a doctor in a white coat.
The doctor headed straight for the fire escape by the stairwell, slamming the heavy metal door shut behind him.
Shutting out the commotion, he slid down the cold wall, gasping for air, his chest heaving.
He ripped off his mask, revealing a pale, sinister face–none other than Daniel Quinn, who had vanished from his hospital room.

Dark red blood seeped through the gauze wrapped tightly around the abdominal wound, spreading into a large stain. Sharp pain shot. through his nerves, causing him to wince.
The gash on his arm, torn by the security fence, was deeper, the flesh peeled back, sending excruciating jolts of pain.
He pulled out the phone he’d snatched from a passerby in the corridor. As he was about to dial Olivia’s number, he overheard two nurses talking outside the stairwell.
“Word just came from the ICU–that suspect, Richard Bennett, passed away.”
“Really? But didn’t they revive him? What happened?”
“Guess he didn’t make it. Too bad, I heard the case wasn’t even closed yet.”
The nurses‘ voices faded away. Daniel stood motionless in the stairwell for a long moment.
Richard Bennett…dead?
The initial shock quickly gave way to undisguised elation in Daniel’s eyes.
“Perfect!”
He had been worried that Richard wouldn’t withstand interrogation and would reveal everything, exposing his overseas assets and his dealings at Pier Three in Boston.
Daniel clutched his wound, chuckling softly.
“Richard, never thought you’d end up doing me a solid.”
“Now that you’re gone, it’s up to me to tie up loose ends.”
Without further hesitation, he dialed Olivia’s number.
The phone rang five times before she answered.
Olivia’s voice came through the speaker, laced with obvious annoyance and a hint of exhaustion.“Who is this? Don’t you know I’m busy?”
“It’s me, Daniel.”
Daniel’s voice was raspy.
Olivia paused, recognizing the name.“Daniel?”
“Weren’t you arrested by the police? How are you calling me?”
The police activity outside her apartment last night, when they arrested Daniel, had been quite a commotion. Of course she knew about
After Daniel’s arrest, she barely slept, worried the police would come knocking, accusing her of harboring a fugitive.
As dawn broke and the police hadn’t arrived, Olivia finally relaxed, managing to get a little sleep. She never expected Daniel to call!
“I broke out.”
Daniel spoke into the phone as he made his way down the fire escape.
“I have some news for you. Richard Bennett is dead.”

“What did you say?”
Olivia shrieked into the phone.“When did this happen?”
“Just now.”
Daniel winced at Olivia’s piercing tone, holding the phone away from his ear.

“The police arrested him last night. He had a heart attack during the interrogation. They rushed him to the hospital, but they couldn’t
save him.”
Silence fell on the other end of the line, followed by muffled sobs that grew more and more distraught.
The news of Richard’s death hit Olivia like a physical blow. Her body went limp, and she slid down the wall until she was sitting on the
floor.
Tears streamed uncontrollably from her eyes, splashing onto the smooth floor and creating dark, spreading stains.
Before she turned five, Richard, though rarely visiting her and her mother, would call every day to check on her.
Later, when she reached school age, her mother, not wanting her to suffer, took her to the Bennett family and revealed their relationship with Richard to Linda.
Subsequently, she and her mother moved into the Bennett residence. Even though Richard was displeased with her mother for making things public and forcing Linda to divorce him, he never took it out on her.
Over the years, he had showered her with affection.
Knowing that Clara was studying AI programming in college, she insisted on learning it too.
Richard hired tutors specifically for her and, recognizing her talent in the field, sent her abroad for advanced studies.
He never deprived her of anything materially. Everything Victor had, she had too, and often things he didn’t.
Aside from the Bennett Group shares, Richard had given her everything he could.
But now, the man who had always protected and doted on her was suddenly gone.
Olivia crouched on the floor, her shoulders shaking violently, tears falling like broken beads, splattering on the floor and creating dark
puddles.
With Diane still in custody awaiting trial, and Victor resenting her for Diane’s role in Linda’s death, he hadn’t contacted her in a long
time.
In this world, she was suddenly utterly alone, with no one left to lean on.
Olivia’s shoulders shook violently, her stifled sobs like shattered glass, piercingly painful to the eardrums.
It wasn’t until she had cried for a long time, until her sobs gradually subsided, leaving only intermittent hiccups, that Daniel spoke slowly, his voice devoid of emotion.“Done crying?”
“What’s done is done. Now is not the time for grief. You need to think about yourself.”
Olivia sniffled, wiping the tears from her face with the back of her hand, her voice thick with nasal congestion and a hint of despair.
“Think? What’s the point of thinking?”
Although she didn’t know why Richard had been arrested by the police, the fact that it had caused such a commotion, even resulting in

death, meant it was undoubtedly a big deal.
If the truth came out, the Bennett Group would surely plummet, possibly even facing bankruptcy.
Daniel had already reached the exit of the stairwell on the first floor. He cautiously listened for any sounds outside, and only after confirming that everything was clear did he gently push the door open a crack.

Spotting an old apartment building nearby, he hurried over and snatched a black windbreaker, roughly his size, from a clothesline on a first–floor balcony.
“Richard is dead, and Victor can’t hold Bennett Group together on his own.”
“I’ve looked into it. Bennett Group’s current focus is on artificial intelligence. You’ve been studying abroad for years. If you go back now and help Victor stabilize things, he’ll listen to you, be eternally grateful. Bennett Group will be yours sooner or later.”
Olivia scoffed.“Victor won’t trust me.”
Ever since Victor found out Diane had killed Linda, he hadn’t called her once.
It was the same when Diane was in trouble, and it’s the same now that Richard is dead.
He’s probably forgotten he even has a half–sister.
“Instead of going back and getting caught in that mess, I might as well pack my bags and go abroad. At least I can be sure I’ll be taken care of for the rest of my life.”
Olivia calculated in her head.
Over the years, Richard had bought her a lot of things. He’d also left her a trust fund and even bought her a property overseas.
Sure, it wouldn’t be the same as the days of carefree spending she had with the Bennett family, but rather than sticking around with Victor, waiting for the Bennett Group to go bankrupt and throwing her meager assets into the abyss, it was better to leave as soon as
possible.
“That’s foolish!”
Hearing Olivia’s words, Daniel paused in the middle of changing his clothes, frustrated.
“My affairs with your mother have nothing to do with you. Running away now just makes you look guilty.”
Olivia had a congenital heart condition, and the reason he initially got involved in organ trafficking was to find a matching heart for
her.
Moreover, all the tricks he had Diane pull at the Bennett Group over the years would inevitably be exposed as the police investigation
unfolded.
When that happened, Olivia would definitely lose whatever little Richard had left her.
He could be arrested by the police at any moment, and without his control, the people under him would never be loyal to Olivia.
What would she do then?
Of course, Daniel couldn’t tell Olivia any of this. He thought for a moment and said, “If the Bennett Group goes bankrupt and is liquidated, do you think you can protect what Richard left you?”
“You might even end up in debt.”
“Instead of that, why not take a gamble and help Victor Bennett get Bennett Group through this crisis?”

Daniel Quinn’s tone softened, coaxing her, “Olivia, you’re a capable person. You shouldn’t give up like this.”
“I can help you, help you rebuild Bennett Group, and let you stand in front of everyone with your head held high, as the true leader of Bennett Group.”
Hearing this, Olivia scoffed, “Mr. Quinn, you can barely save yourself right now. How can you help me?”
“I have my ways.”
Daniel Quinn adjusted his ill–fitting jacket, put on a mask, and walked out of the old apartment building.
“Just arrange a car for me to get to Boston.”
He had rented a warehouse at Pier Three in Boston under Kevin Reynolds‘ name twenty years ago.
Hidden there were quite a few gold bars he had secretly exchanged over the years, as well as the dirt he had collected on the wealthy businessmen and prestigious families who were part of the initial organ replacement scheme.
As long as he got his hands on those things, he could make a comeback.
“Olivia, trust me. I definitely won’t let Bennett Group go bankrupt. I might even take it to the next level.”
Olivia hesitated. She didn’t know if Daniel Quinn was telling the truth, but someone like him definitely had some backup plans.
Should she trust Daniel and take a gamble, continuing to enjoy her current life of comfort and luxury?
Or should she wait for the Bennett Group to go bankrupt and have her assets seized by the court?
“Alright, I’ll help you.”
Olivia hesitated for a long time before finally making up her mind.“But if you dare to deceive me, I’ll make sure you suffer, even if it
costs me my life.”
“Rest assured, we’re in this together. I won’t lie to you.”
A smile tugged at the corner of Daniel’s lips.“Once the car is arranged, send me the license plate number. I’ll wait for you in the alley behind the hospital.”
