Chapter 24

The cop tapped away on his computer. Once he confirmed Clara and Ethan were actually married, he looked up at her, a flicker of pity in his
eyes.
No way. The Carter heir actually got married.
But from the way he carried himself, Ethan clearly wasn’t a fan of this Mrs. Carter.
You could even say he hated her guts; otherwise, he wouldn’t have posted a clarification on Carter Group’s official page, or even called the cops to arrest his wife’s friend.
But that kind of rich–people drama? That was way above his pay grade.
“It’s all confirmed, Mrs. Carter.”
The cop handed Clara her ID back.“Since it’s been proven Mia didn’t spread rumors, we can process her release.”
“No. She can’t be released.”
The glass door of the precinct swung open. Ethan walked in, his lawyer right behind him.
The lawyer spotted Clara, a flicker of something in her eyes, but didn’t even slow down. She just strode past Clara, heading straight for the officer.
“Officer, my client is pressing charges against Mia. She posted my client’s marriage certificate online without consent.”
“That’s a violation of their image rights and privacy. We expect serious action.”
Clara froze.“I agreed to it!” she blurted.“I’m one of the parties! I told her to do it!”
“You told her to do it?” Ethan’s voice was sharp.
He looked at Clara, a flicker of disgust in his eyes.
“So you just had to announce yourself as Mrs. Carter, huh?”
“Clara, don’t forget, we agreed to keep this marriage private. This stunt of yours – how do you expect people to look at Olivia now?”
“She just got booted from Lewis AI because of you. Can’t stand seeing her do well, huh? You trying to ruin her?”
Olivia walked in right behind Ethan. She heard everything, a smirk playing on her lips. Then, she casually linked her arm through his.
“Eth,” she purred,“with you here, nothing anyone does can touch me.”
Her gaze swept over Clara, packed with raw, undeniable disdain.
Honestly, sometimes she almost felt bad for Clara. Because even if Henry had completely exposed the other woman for ripping off Clara’s work last night, Ethan would still find a way to shield her, make sure she walked away scot–free.
Olivia knew Clara was fuming, bound to make a scene sooner or later. But she never expected such a dumb move.
So what if she posts her marriage certificate with Ethan online?
Trying to stake her claim with that?
As long as Ethan denies it, shutting it down would be easy as pie.
And seriously, with Clara making such a public mess and ruining her own reputation, would Ethan even let her off the hook?
Sure enough, the next second Ethan spoke up.“Mia’s actions wronged Olivia. She’s gotta take responsibility for that.”
“I’ll take it.”
Clara stared at them, her voice icy.“Whatever you want, aim it at me. Let Mia go.”
“You?”
Ethan scoffed, not even looking at her. He just gestured to the cops.“Process her.”
“Wait!”
Clara panicked, stepping right in front of Ethan, looking up at him.
“Ethan, leave Mia alone. Or I swear, I’ll expose what happened that night.”
“You probably don’t know this, but I called the cops right after that night. There’s a police report, solid proof.”
Ethan shoved her aside.“Don’t get in the way of the police.”
“Clara, you seriously think I’d believe that?”
“You’re the one who drugged me! And you dare call the cops? Your tricks are getting lamer and lamer.”

The police station went quiet. All eyes were on Clara, a mix of pity and mockery, making her burn with shame.
“Ethan, you rotten kid! Clara’s pregnant, and you just pushed her like that!”
A cane clacked against the floor from the doorway. James, in a dark Traditional Stand–Up Collar Jacket, walked into the police station, leaning on his butler’s arm, and shot Ethan a furious glare.
Olivia’s grip on Ethan’s arm tightened.“Grandpa,” she whispered.
James didn’t even spare Olivia a glance. He walked straight to Clara, whacking Ethan on the shin with his cane as he passed.
“You two should sort out your own mess,” James barked.“And you brought it all the way to the police station? What a total waste of public resources!”
He turned to the officer.“Officer, the Carter family is dropping the charges against Mia. We’ve caused enough trouble. Please, just do the paperwork and let her go.”
“Alright, just a moment.”
With James himself giving the order, the police stopped hesitating. They immediately signed the papers and went to the back room to bring Mia out.
Once the coast was clear, James finally looked at Olivia, though his words were aimed squarely at Ethan.
“I told you to cut this woman loose ages ago. Don’t let her stress Clara out while she’s pregnant. And you actually caused this whole scene at the police station for her?”
“If the butler hadn’t seen all the online drama and rushed me over here, how much more trouble were you planning to cause?”
“You’ve dragged the Carter name through the mud!”
Olivia’s face fell. She looked up at Ethan, but he just stood there, lips pressed tight, silent.
Clara, though, paid no attention to the standoff between grandfather and grandson. Her eyes were glued to the hallway.
The second Mia stepped out, Clara rushed over, pulling her into a tight hug, her eyes already welling up.
“Mia, why are you so stupid? Why’d you provoke him? If things had gone sideways, I couldn’t have protected you.”
“I’m sorry.”
Mia, still shaken, her voice thick with tears, choked out, “I just… I saw all the terrible things they were saying online. I couldn’t stop myself.”
“I caused you so much trouble. It won’t happen again, I promise.”
Clara hugged Mia tighter. After all, this whole mess was because of her.
Mia had stood up for her and even lost her job over it. How could Clara possibly blame her now?
James watched them, then sighed.“Back to the estate. We’ll discuss this there.”
He looked at Ethan.“You’re coming along!”
Ethan didn’t commit.“Grandpa,” he said.“You and Clara go home first. I’ll take Olivia.”
James shot him a glare. He didn’t say another word.
Clara handed Mia her car keys.“Drive my car back,” she told her.“Tell your mom you’re okay.” Then, she got in the car with James.
Under a ginkgo tree in the Carter Estate’s courtyard, Lucas was kicking the trunk, letting off some serious steam. The Carter Group’s PR department had already buried the online scandal.
But still, plenty of people had caught wind of it. All afternoon, he’d been getting calls from a bunch of kids, all asking if Clara was really his
mom.
One kid even asked if he was the baby his mom had after sleeping her way in.
Now he’s a total joke to his friends.
Damn Mom!
The car pulled to a stop. He froze, then glanced over.
As soon as Clara stepped out of the back seat, all his pent–up anger just exploded. He rushed over and kicked her hard in the shin. “Why’d you blab about you and Dad?!”
“Now all my friends are laughing at me!”
“You’re not fit to be my mom!”
James, just stepping out of the car, flinched hard at Lucas’s sudden lunge. He barked at the house staff.

“Quick, get the young madam! Don’t let her fall!”
She then glared at Margaret, who was standing nearby, and snapped, “Is this how you normally teach your kid?!”
Margaret’s face fell. She mumbled, “Luke wasn’t wrong, though…”
Still, she pulled Lucas inside.
“You alright?”
Luke’s just spoiled rotten by his grandma,” James said, stepping closer to Clara. “Don’t take anything he says seriously. Don’t let it get to you. Just focus on your pregnancy.”
“I’ll handle Eth and that other woman. You won’t be wronged.”
“But you shouldn’t have spilled all that tea at the police station, either. It just made the Carter family look like fools.”
“Grandpa, you don’t have to deal with Olivia. No need for Ethan to throw a fit.”
Clara’s voice was flat.“Since he likes Olivia so much, I’ll just step aside.”
