Ryan sat there, watching the whole thing. A faint smile touched his lips, his gaze deep.
Once the cut was taken care of, the three of them left the lounge. Clara told Ryan to take Lila home and get some rest. She’d handle the rest of
the data.
Ryan knew Lila needed to rest, so he didn’t push back. He thanked Clara, then carried Lila to the elevator.
Clara waved at Lila, then turned and headed for the R&D lab.
Her phone buzzed. Clara scanned her iris and answered.
“Hello? Who’s this?”
‘Clara, a lawyer showed up today. With cops.”
“Didn’t Olivia give you the yard back? Why are you still holding onto this? Do you really have to be so ruthless?”
“That’s a whole different story.”
Clara’s voice was flat.”He shorted the company, and that hurt all the shareholders, including me.”
“But he’s your uncle!”
Emma’s voice rose, sharp.”You think you’d have any of this if he hadn’t adopted you?”
Clara shut her eyes.
Yeah. Her uncle adopted her. So when the Carter family wanted her to marry in, her uncle practically begged her to say yes to James-all for the company. She gave in.
And her uncle? He totally used the Carters’ connections to break into Chicago’s elite circles.
But they? How did they treat her after all that?
Bleeding me dry wasn’t enough. Just to kiss Ethan’s ass, he wrecked the company. He wiped out everything Grandpa and Mom built. Even the house Mom left me? He gave that to Olivia and her mother.
She’d gone above and beyond for them.
“Nothing else? I’m hanging up.”
Before Emma could say another word, Clara hit the disconnect button, tossed her phone into her bag, and walked into the R&D lab. First thing the next morning, Clara was waiting for the algorithm results. The lab door swung open, and Ryan walked in, still pulling on his
shirt.
‘My bad for making you pull an all-nighter. Lils brought you breakfast. She’s waiting in the break room.”
“Alright. I’ll go get some rest. Wake me when the data’s ready.”
Clara rubbed her throbbing temples as she walked out of the lab. She hit the main hall and froze.
Robert was standing by the entrance, talking to the front desk staff. Clara’s face went cold.
‘Clara.'”
Robert’s voice was soft, like nothing had ever happened between them.
Clara just stared at him, her eyes icy.”What do you want?”
Robert’s gaze darkened slightly.”We need to talk.”
It was right in the middle of office hours, the front desk bustling with people. Clara turned and walked towards the break room. Follow me.” Once they were inside the break room, Robert handed Clara a share agreement.
“This is the share agreement for the new company. I bumped up your stake in Anderson Industries. Just check it out and sign.”
Clara didn’t take it. She just stared at Robert, a sneer on her face.
Robert saw she wasn’t budging. He lowered his voice.”Clara, I know you’re still pissed about what went down. But I really had no other choice.”
“If I hadn’t done that, how could I have snagged the Chicago East Side Development Site?”
“We’re family. If we do well, your life with the Carter family will be so much easier, won’t it?”
Clara just found it deeply ironic. What kind of life she had with the Carter family? Like they ever gave a damn.
They only cared now because she hadn’t divorced Ethan yet. She was still useful, and they didn’t want to completely piss her off.
Seeing Clara wouldn’t budge, Robert’s face completely darkened.”You’re still so damn stubborn,” he snapped.”No wonder you could never win
over Ethan’s heart.”

“Fine, then. If anything happens down the line, don’t you dare expect the family to have your back!” With that, he shoved open the door and stormed out.
Clara let out a slow breath, a deep sorrow settling in her chest. Now, she really was all alone.
Meru
Her phone screen lit up with a notification for a charity auction. Clara picked it up, glancing at it casually, but then her eyes snapped wide open. Isn’t this the necklace her mother had always desperately wanted back?!
