Margaret shrieked, lunging to stop him, but she was too slow.
Clara felt a sharp, searing pain in her lower abdomen, like she’d been hit by a sledgehammer. Cold sweat instantly broke out on her forehead, her face turning ghostly pale.
“You…”
She stared at the kid, his face twisted in a terrifying snarl. Her heart felt clutched by an icy hand, the pain so intense she couldn’t make a sound.
If she’d actually been pregnant, a kick like that would’ve made her miscarry!
“What are you looking at?!”
Her stare made Lucas flinch, but he puffed out his chest anyway.”You had it coming! Serves you right!”
“You shut your mouth!”
Margaret finally snapped out of it, yanking Lucas behind her. All the color drained from her face. She screamed towards the door, “Quick! Get the driver! Take Mrs. Carter to the hospital!”
She spun back to Clara.”How are you? Are you okay?”
Clara gritted her teeth and shook her head, unable to speak through the pain.
Maids rushed over, carefully helping her as they moved towards the main door.
Clara got in the car. Lucas’s wails and Margaret’s scolding voices seeped in from outside. Annoyed, she slammed the window shut.
What she didn’t see was the sudden silence in the great room. James, somehow, was standing in the corridor, his lips trembling, pointing at
Lucas.
“You wretch! You absolute menace!”
He gasped, couldn’t catch his breath, then keeled over backward!
“Dad!”
“Great-grandpa!”
The yard instantly erupted into chaos.
Thomas Reed had just pulled the car into the hospital lot, helped Clara out, and walked her into OB-GYN when his phone buzzed. Margaret’s panicked, sobbing voice blasted through the phone:”Thomas! Go get Dr. Garcia, now! Grandpa… he passed out!” Thomas glanced at Clara’s ashen face, a conflicted look on his own.
“Thomas, you should go.”
Clara’s voice was weak.”I’ll be fine by myself.”
“But, Mrs. Carter…”
“It’s fine.”
Clara glanced at the OB-GYN entrance.”It’s only a few steps. I’ll be okay.”
The driver watched her disappear into the OB/GYN building. He hesitated for a beat, then spun the car around and sped off.
Inside the exam room, the doctor frowned, holding the report.”That was a pretty nasty hit,” he said. “Luckily, no internal damage. Just some soft tissue bruising. Go home, rest up for a few days, no heavy lifting. You’ll be fine.”
Clara let out a shaky breath. She stepped out of the exam room, walking slowly down the long corridor and out of the hospital.
What she didn’t see was Emma, tucked away in the corner, her eyes full of complicated emotions as she watched her walk away.
‘Number 67, Emma.”
Emma heard her name. She walked into the exam room and asked the doctor.
“Doctor, the patient who just left? That’s my cousin, Clara. I saw her come in alone, and I was kinda worried. What’s wrong with her?”
The doctor recognized Emma. When she heard Clara’s name, she didn’t hold back.”Nothing serious,” she said.”Just some external impact. A few days of rest, and she’ll be fine.”
An external impact?
What about the baby inside her?
Emma looked confused. “But she’s pregnant,” she said. “Will the baby be okay?”

The doctor paused. She flipped through Clara’s chart.”She’s not pregnant,” she said.”Oh, right. She had an abortion last month.”
An abortion?
Emma’s eyes snapped open in disbelief.
Does Ethan know about this?
What would he do if he found out?
No, no way. Ethan cannot find out. She has to keep it a secret!
At least until Dad secures the Chicago East Side Development Site, Ethan can’t know!
That was it. Emma grabbed her phone and dialed Robert.
Meanwhile, at the Carter Estate.
Lucas huddled in a corner of the hallway, dialing Olivia’s number.
He barely picked up before crying, “Auntie, I messed up!”

“I kicked Mom’s stomach. Grandma said Mom’s probably gonna lose the baby. Great-Grandpa passed out, he was so mad. Will Dad kill me
when he finds out?”
“Auntie, what do I do?”
Olivia’s fingers, clutching her phone, stilled. A slow smile spread on her face. “Don’t worry, Luke,” she cooed.”Your dad’s been out of the country on a business trip. He won’t be back ’til tomorrow noon. Auntie will find a way to stall him.”

“Besides, if your mom really loses the baby, you’ll be the Carter family’s only kid left. How could your dad ever hit then?”
Lucas sniffled.”Really?”
“Of course.”
Olivia’s fingertip traced the window sill.”Tomorrow and Sunday are the weekend. You just stay home and be a good boy. When your dad gets back, I’ll speak up for you.”
She hung up. Olivia couldn’t help but hum a little tune.
Clara’s baby was gone. Given how much Ethan cared about that kid, he’d definitely blame her for not protecting it. He’d be completely sick of
her.
Then, her relationship with Ethan would absolutely go back to how it was before.
No, maybe even further. You never knew.
But the next day, as soon as Olivia arrived at Nova AI, she saw Clara stepping out of the elevator, perfectly fine.
She carefully studied Clara’s face. There was no way she looked like someone who’d just had a miscarriage.
Olivia’s heart sank. What the hell?
Had Clara not miscarried at all?
Clara noticed Olivia’s stare. She gave a nod, a quick greeting, then turned and walked into the R&D lab.
Today, she needed to get the initial iteration data for Blade done. She had to integrate it with Skyline’s system. No time or energy to waste on
Olivia.
Just after noon, Clara finished the iteration data. She knocked on Olivia’s R&D lab door.
Sophia opened the door. Clara looked in, but Olivia was nowhere in sight.
‘Where’s Olivia?”
“The data’s ready. She needs to handle the integration for compatibility with Skyline.”
Sophia leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed.’Olivia’s with Mr. Carter at the StarMap conference. Whatever it is, you’ll have to wait until she gets back.”
Clara frowned. Call her and tell her to come back. This is urgent, we can’t afford any delays.”
Sophia shrugged. No way, I wouldn’t dare. Mr. Carter’s the one who sent her, after all.”
“If you have the guts, take it up with Mr. Carter yourself.”
Clara didn’t waste another second. She turned and headed to the break room, dragging Ethan’s number out of her blacklist and dialing.
The phone rang and rang. All she got was a busy signal.
She lost count of how many times she called, but the call finally connected. It was Olivia’s voice.”Who is this? Eth’s busy right now. What can I

tell him for you?”
Clara froze. She couldn’t believe Ethan would let Olivia touch his phone.
Clara remembered a time Ethan was in the shower, phone ringing non-stop. She’d answered it for him, only for him to give her the cold shoulder, telling her never to touch his phone again.
Clara let out a breath. “It’s Clara. Olivia, the initial data for Blade is out. We need you back here to get it compatible with Skyline.”
“But I don’t have time right now. Can’t you just wait until Eth and I are done?”
The line went dead.
Clara stared at her phone screen, taking a deep breath to tamp down the rage simmering inside her.
The entire R&D department had pulled countless all-nighters for Blade, just to churn out this iteration data. And now they were stuck, waiting for compatibility tests with Skyline before they could even start debugging.

If Olivia didn’t come back now, who knew how many more all-nighters everyone would have to pull just to catch up on all that lost progress! Lila, quietly drawing nearby, sensed the tension in the breakroom and looked up.”Auntie, are you mad?”
“It’s fine, Auntie can handle it.”
Clara smiled, gently ruffled Lila’s hair, then walked out of the break room and knocked on Olivia’s lab door again.
“I already told you,” Sophia snapped, “Olivia’s not here. Whatever it is, it can wait till she gets back.”
Sophia yanked the door open, clearly annoyed. Clara didn’t even look at her, just squeezed past her into the lab, sat right down at Olivia’s computer, and powered it on.
“What are you doing?!”
Sophia practically shrieked, “What the hell are you doing?! Do you have any idea this is all classified? You don’t have permission to touch Olivia’s computer! If anything goes wrong, who’s going to take responsibility for that?!
Clara’s fingers flew across the keyboard.”I’ll deal with it,” she said, without looking up
“Do you even realize Blade is for actual combat? Every second we waste here, how much more risk are we putting soldiers on the front line in?”
In less than half an hour, Clara had Skyline’s operating system completely figured out. She pulled up the Blade data and started the compatibility integration.
The progress bar was only halfway done when the lab door burst open again.
Clara’s fingers paused on the keyboard. She looked up, a flicker of shock in her eyes.
