Chapter 46
Mason froze. He stared at the figure. It looked familiar. He instinctively stepped forward, but Emma gripped his wrist.
“Mason, my stomach suddenly hurts so bad. Was it because I got so scared just now?”
Mason stopped dead. He looked down at Emma, her back slightly hunched, her eyes wide with panic.
He spared one last glance at the figure disappearing into the crowd, a frown pulling at his brows. Then he turned to Emma, steadying her.”Hospital. Now.”
The ER lights were blindingly white.

Ethan got a call from the hospital. He cut his meeting short, ignoring the shareholders’ annoyed glares, and rushed over. He ran straight into Natalie standing outside the ER.
“What are you doing here?”
He glanced at the ER, then looked down at Natalie.
Natalie smiled.”What are you doing here?”
“I just got in a wreck…”
“Are you okay?”
Urgency flashed in Ethan’s eyes. He quickly scanned her.”Where are you hurt?”
Natalie caught the anxious look in his eyes. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “It wasn’t me,” she said.”I just happened to be there. Saw someone faint, and I was worried, so I came along to the hospital.”
“What are you doing here, though?” Ethan asked, a hint of concern still in his voice.”Are you feeling unwell?”
“No, I…”
Ethan was just about to speak when a nurse led Clara out of the emergency room.
“Is anyone here for Clara?”
Ethan looked
up.”
“Here.”
Clara looked a little pale, a bandage taped to her temple.
Natalie looked surprised, glancing at Ethan, then at Clara, her eyes finally settling on Clara’s stomach. It was flat, no bump whatsoever.
A flicker of resentment crossed her eyes, but she quickly put on a smile and went over to Clara.
“You’re awake? Still feeling unwell anywhere?”
“You have no idea, when you suddenly passed out just now, you really scared me half to death.” Clara smiled weakly.”You brought me to the hospital, didn’t you? Thank you so much.”
“It was nothing.”
Natalie managed a smile, looked at Ethan, and gave him a playful wink.
‘I had no idea you were Mr. Carter’s wife. Now he really owes me one.”
Clara’s gaze slid past Natalie, landing on Ethan.”You two know each other?”
“Yeah,’ Ethan confirmed. We met during an interview awhile back.”
Ethan’s urgency was gone, replaced by his usual cool self. He reached out to steady her.”Where are you hurt?” Clara dodged his hand. “I’m fine, just a little dizzy,” she said.”The doctor wants a few more tests.”
“I’m coming with you.”
Ethan didn’t give Clara a chance to protest. He just took her hand.
Natalie’s eyes landed on their clasped hands. Her smile faltered.
“No.”
Clara yanked her hand free from Ethan’s.”I’m good,” she said. “You can go.”
She grabbed her test slip and headed upstairs.
Natalie watched Clara disappear around the corner of the staircase, then she couldn’t hold it in anymore. Her eyes welled up.

“So that’s your wife?”
“Wow. You really kept her in a bubble, didn’t you? Fainting from a simple fender bender.”
Ethan caught the sarcasm in her voice and looked down at Natalie.
“She’s not usually like this. She just lost the baby, so she’s fragile.”
Ethan’s voice was soft.
“Oh?”
Natalie chuckled.”What’s she usually like then?
“Gentle and devoted? Running the house? Is that the only kind of woman good enough to be Mrs. Carter?”
“She’s been good to me.”
Ethan paused.”She’s a good woman.”
“Good to you?”
Natalie’s eyes suddenly went red, tears welling up without warning.”What about me? Ethan, wasn’t I good to you back then?”

“Back then, those old bastards, scared you’d take over and cut off their profits, had men chase you for blocks. To save you, I even got hurt so bad I can’t have kids anymore!”
“But you just went and married someone else, didn’t you?”
A flicker of guilt crossed Ethan’s eyes.”You were good too. It’s just that at the time…”
“I don’t want to hear about ‘back then’! I just want you to explain now!”
Natalie pressed a hand to her chest.”You promised me,” her voice choked, “even if you couldn’t give me a home, you’d still give me a child.”
“She didn’t look pregnant, though.”
Ethan fidgeted with his fingers, swallowing hard a few times before finally sighing.”I’m sorry. Something came up.”
“You always have an excuse.”
Natalie wiped a tear away, then turned and walked away. The hem of her trench coat swished past the long hallway bench, stirring a faint breeze.
Ethan stood there, watching her leave. He slowly clenched his fists.
Clara walked downstairs, exam results in hand. Her eyes tracked the direction Natalie had gone.
“You guys close?”
“We just know each other.”
Ethan snapped out of his thoughts, looking down at Clara.”How are the results?”
“Concussion. Nothing else.”
Her voice was steady, giving nothing away.
Ethan’s gaze landed on the gauze taped to her forehead. Annoyance flared inside him.
‘Didn’t I tell you to stay in your room? What are you doing out here?”
His voice sharpened, thinking of the shareholders back at the company, all pissed because the Bennett family called off the deal. “Can’t you just listen? Do you know Grandpa’s condition worsened because of your miscarriage?”
“Grandpa’s sick?”
“How is he?”
“Is he in the hospital? Which room?”
“It’s not that serious. He’s already back at the estate, resting.”
Ethan checked his watch.”I gotta go. Get back to your room and rest. I’ll have someone send up some food.”
His footsteps faded. Clara watched him disappear around the corner, then a small smile touched her lips. Ethan seriously thought she was an idiot. Like she couldn’t tell the weird vibe between him and Natalie? Ethan walked out of the hospital lobby. He stopped, scanning the area. No sign of Natalie.
He sighed. A quick call to David:’Handle the shareholders.’ He hung up and walked straight for the hospital’s backyard.

Natalie sat on a bench in the backyard, her head down.
The wind caught her hair, revealing the tear tracks on her face.
Ethan walked over and dropped onto the bench beside her.’Don’t cry,’ he said.’I’ll figure something out about the baby.”
Natalie looked up, her eyes swimming with tears.”What else can you even do?”
“After everything went down, I barely had any eggs saved. Now? There are hardly any left.”
“Trying to find a surrogate for those eggs again? It’s just not going to happen!”
Meru
Ethan stayed quiet for a long moment. Finally, he spoke, his decision clear.”Once she’s feeling better, I can try to convince her to do another round of IVF.”
Natalie’s eyes lit up. Then a worried look crossed her face.”You already tricked her once,” she said.”You think you can do it again?”
Ethan clenched his hand on his lap.”Yeah, she will.”
For years, Clara had never refused anything he asked.
Once the baby was born, he’d have finally repaid Natalie for saving his life all those years ago.
After this, he’d live a good life with Clara and spend the rest of his life making it up to her.
Clara walked to the hospital room door and paused, seeing Chris and two traffic cops.
“Officer Evans, what’s up?”
“Yeah.”
Chris glanced at his colleagues behind him.”We were just at the traffic department, heard about your accident, and came to check in.”
One of the traffic cops opened his notebook.”Ms. Bennett, according to the blood test, the driver was drunk. We’d like to get your account of what happened.”
Clara frowned.”Drunk driving? But he’d been tailing me since I left the hospital.”
