Chapter 52

Clara glanced at Mason but didn’t say a word, walking around him toward the other side of the street. Mason drove slowly alongside her, one hand on the wheel.”What’s wrong, cat got your tongue?”

“Did you have fun at the National Security Agency?”

Clara stopped walking.”Mason Walker, if this is your revenge for me using Ethan to get the necklace back, then fine, I accept it.” “This ends here. I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”

“Ends here?”

Mason chuckled as if he’d heard a joke, gently tapped the brakes and brought the G-Wagon to a halt before hopping out.

“Clara, give me back the necklace, and then we’re done.”

“I told you before, Emma really loves that necklace. She was planning to wear it at our wedding.”

“Hand it over now, and I might let you off easy.”

Rage churned in Clara’s eyes.”Mason, you said that if I paid you ten million, you’d let me have the necklace.”

“You also said that Ethan Carter gave you a cut to get that necklace for me, and I paid for it.

“That’s not nearly enough.”

Mason’s face darkened.”If you want the necklace, you’ll have to play along with me!”

With that, he grabbed her wrist, his grip so tight she thought her bones would break. “Come on, get in the car. I’ll

you somewhere.”

But her strength was no match for Mason’s. With a shove, he half-dragged, half-pushed her into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut and locking it.

The engine roared to life, the tires screeching against the pavement.

“It’s not too late to give me the necklace.”

Mason stared straight ahead, his voice cold and hard as steel.

Clara turned her face away, watching the blur of streetlights outside the window, her voice tight, “No way.”

Mason yanked the steering wheel, the car swerving sharply at the intersection. Clara’s shoulder slammed against the door, and she gasped, sucking in a sharp breath of pain.

He turned to her, his eyes dark and menacing.”You think you’re in a position to bargain right now?”

Clara pressed her lips together and straightened up in her seat.”That necklace belonged to my mother. No matter what, now that I have it, there’s no way I’m giving it to you.”

“Whatever you’re planning, go ahead and try it. I’m ready for it.”

Mason stared at her stubborn profile, a sneer twisting his lips.”Fine, that’s just fine.”

“Clara, you’ve certainly got more backbone than you did seven years ago,”

Clara felt a pang in her chest. Seven years ago, she had bowed to reality, but it was for Anderson Industries, for him, Mason Walker!

And he had never even considered her point of view, instead blaming her for everything!

Clara closed her eyes, not wanting to talk anymore.

Outside, rain began to fall, a light drizzle against the car windows that quickly turned into a curtain of water.

Mason watched the windshield wipers swishing back and forth and scoffed.”Nova Al has suspended you. That means Benjamin Hayes has given up on you.”

“Who do you think is going to help you now? Ethan Carter?”

“I heard that even without Olivia Bennett, he hasn’t been idle these past few days. Word is he’s got someone new on his arm. Has he even contacted you in the last three days?”

Clara’s heart clenched.

No.

Logically, after something like this, the National Security Agency would have notified Ethan, but she hadn’t heard a single word from him in days.

“With his resources proving those evidence was fake would be a piece of cake.”

Mason chuckled softly. But he hasn’t made a move. You know why? Because in his eyes, you’re not important anymore.”

“Enough!”

Clara’s eyes snapped open, glaring at Mason.”Are you saying all this to make me regret my past choices?”

“Well, Mason Walker, this is all my business. We’re over. No matter what, it’s none of your concern!”

“None of my concern?”

As if provoked, Mason slammed his foot on the accelerator, and the car surged forward.

The wipers frantically swung from side to side, but they couldn’t keep up with the downpour. The road ahead blurred into an indistinct haze.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat as she gripped the seatbelt, her knuckles bone-white.

“Mason, pull over!”

A tremor of fear finally laced her voice.

Mason ignored her, the car accelerating, tires hydroplaning as they sliced through the flooded street, sending plumes of water arching skyward. Clara’s breath hitched, growing shallower with each passing second. Her eyes were fixed on the road ahead, as if bracing for an unseen

collision.

“Screech-”

The car skidded across the slick asphalt for what felt like an eternity before finally grinding to a halt. Clara lurched forward, the seatbelt digging into her chest, yanking her back against the seat.

Her shoulder throbbed. She fumbled with the door lock, desperate to escape, but a large hand clamped around her wrist.

“Who said you could get out?”

Mason’s towering form loomed over her, the humid, rain-tinged air brushing against her ear.

A wave of memories crashed over her, the echo of being pulled into a room by Ethan seven years ago. The struggle, the humiliation-it all came flooding back, leaving her chilled to the bone, trembling uncontrollably.

Seeing her huddled in the seat, her body racked with shivers, a flash of anger sparked in Mason’s eyes.”Clara, are you scared of me?”

Clara squeezed her eyes shut, refusing to meet his gaze.

Ever since that night, any excessive physical contact with a man triggered those memories of despair.

Mason, seeing her like this, only grew angrier, his tone sharp.”Why are you shaking like that?”

“You think I want to touch you?”

“Tch, no way. I’m afraid of catching something nasty!”

He stepped past Clara and yanked open the car door.”Get out!”

Clara practically fell out of the car.

The downpour instantly soaked her, icy water running down her hair and into her collar. The wind sent shivers through her body, her teeth chattering.

She looked up, watching Mason’s taillights disappear quickly into the rain.

Her vision blurred by the rain, she got up from the ground and walked to the roadside under the eaves, pulling out her phone to call a ride.

But on a rainy day like this, rideshares were scarce. Even when she increased the fare fivefold, no one accepted her request.

A familiar black sedan slowly drove past, stopping in front of a restaurant on the left. Clara’s gaze drifted over without thinking.

Ethan was holding a large black umbrella, tilting it to shield Natalie completely as he walked quickly to the Bentley, opened the back door, and

got in.

Natalie didn’t get a single drop of rain on her, while half of Ethan was drenched.

He didn’t notice Clara, soaked to the bone and utterly miserable, standing by the side of the road.

Clara’s heart felt swollen, waterlogged with a mix of bitterness and ache.

So, Natalie Parker was the new woman in Ethan’s life.

Was that why Mason brought her here, just to witness this?

But what did it matter?

She was practically divorced from Ethan. Who he was with was none of her business.

Sensing someone watching him, Clara looked up and met Jackson’s thoughtful gaze.

He was holding his own umbrella, trailing behind Ethan and Natalie. When he saw Clara looking at him, he paused, flashed a wicked grin, and hopped into the passenger seat.

As the Bentley’s taillights vanished into the rain, Clara wiped the rain from her face, opened her ride-hailing app, and saw that the nearest car was over an hour away.

Through the heavy rain, she spotted the lights of a supermarket not far off. She gritted her teeth, dashed out into the downpour, and ran toward it, hoping to buy an umbrella.

Before she could take more than a few steps, she heard footsteps behind her, and suddenly, a black umbrella was held firmly over her head.

Clara paused, turning to see Ryan Walker standing behind her with the umbrella. The rain had dampened his forehead, a few strands of hair clinging to his brow, softening his usual cool demeanor and adding a touch of disheveled wildness.

“I thought I recognized you. It really is you.”

Ryan smiled. “What are you doing here?”

“Just running errands.”

Clara noticed that he was tilting the umbrella almost entirely to her side. She gestured toward the nearby supermarket.”Don’t worry about me. I’m just going to buy an umbrella.”

“Let’s go together.”

Ryan extended the hand holding the umbrella further in Clara’s direction, but his body remained still.”I need to pick up a few things anyway.”
