Chapter 67

The next day, Clara woke up naturally, not arriving at Nova AI until almost noon. She noticed a man standing at the reception desk and, out of curiosity, glanced at him.
The receptionist pointed at Clara and said something to the man.
The man turned around, and Clara froze as she recognized his face.
It had been years since she’d seen Victor Bennett.
He was much more mature than the boy she remembered, exuding the air of someone in a position of power. It was clear he’d been doing well within the Bennett family all these years.
“Clara, long time no see.”
Victor wore a well-tailored black suit, his posture as straight as a pine tree.
Clara looked away coolly, a mix of emotions stirring within her.
The brother she used to rely on most as a child, the one who stood up for her when other kids bullied her, was standing right in front of her
now.
Times had changed, and things were no longer the same.
Who could have imagined that she and he would end up like this?
“I texted you, but you didn’t reply, so I had to come find you.”
Victor Bennett smiled, the same smile Clara remembered.
Clara recalled the message she had received earlier. She had been so flustered by Lucas’s outburst that she hadn’t had time to reply.
Later, Ryan was injured because of her, and the Blade development was at a critical stage, so she threw herself into the lab, working non-stop, and completely forgot about it.
But before she could speak, a familiar voice sounded from behind her.
“Brother!”
Olivia Bennett walked to Victor’s side, her makeup vibrant, a medical report clutched in her hand, a hint of triumph flashing in her eyes as she looked at Clara.
Clara’s heart sank.”Did you need something from me?”
Victor frowned, clearly disliking her aloofness, and gestured for Olivia to hand her the report.
“Take a look.”
“Olivia has been taking flak for the miscarriage for so long, and the Carter family has been targeting her because of it, preventing her from returning to Stellar Horizon.”
“This whole thing hasn’t just affected Olivia, it’s dragged the Bennett family’s name through the mud too.”
“If you go to the Carter family and make it clear that you terminated the pregnancy yourself and that Olivia had nothing to do with it, I’ll let you keep a shred of dignity.”
Clara lowered her gaze to the medical report, a cold laugh escaping her lips. So, Victor Bennett had set up this meeting to defend Olivia. “What exactly do you want me to clarify? I never said Olivia was responsible for the miscarriage.”
Clara looked up, her gaze sweeping over Olivia’s smug expression, her tone indifferent.
“The reason Ethan Carter targeted her is because she incited Lucas to hurt me. She also locked me in the research lab and cut off the ventilation system, almost suffocating me to death.”
“Clara, dare you say Ethan knew you had an abortion?”
Olivia’s face fell.
Victor Bennett was, after all, Clara’s brother. If he knew Olivia had genuinely tried to kill Clara, he might not be so quick to defend her. “Brother, don’t listen to her lies! She didn’t want the baby herself and is trying to frame me! She’s just jealous that I have a higher degree, and that Ethan and I used to be close!”
Victor Bennett patted Olivia’s back, giving her a reassuring look before turning to Clara, his eyes filled with disappointment.
“Clara, I never thought you’d become like this, making up such lies just to shirk responsibility.”
Clara just found it laughable, she didn’t expect Victor to be so biased towards Olivia.

It seemed he’d had it too good in the Bennett family these past years, good enough to forget that Olivia and her mother were the ones who destroyed his mother’s marriage.
He forgot he once said he would always protect her, forgot his promise to bring her and their mother back to the Bennett family.
“Victor, you’re truly blinded by love, preferring to believe an illegitimate daughter over your own sister.”
Clara’s voice was soft, laced with disappointment, as she looked up at Olivia.
“Whether these things are made up by me or not, why don’t you just ask Ethan yourself?”
Olivia’s face paled slightly, she hadn’t forgotten that Ethan still had the surveillance footage from that time.
She had been careless. She thought that with the medical record, as long as she let Ethan know that Clara had aborted the child herself, he would definitely be furious and ruin Clara’s reputation in the Bennett family.
But she’d forgotten all the things she’d done to Clara. If Victor found out about those, she wouldn’t get off scot-free either.
Meng
She was about to advise Victor to let it go. After all, she had the medical records now, and she could always find another way to tell Ethan about it later. But then she heard Victor say, “Clara, Olivia isn’t illegitimate.”
“Aunt Bennett has already married your father. She’s a legitimate Bennett heiress.”
“You’ve made Olivia carry this burden for so long, and you’ve damaged the Bennett family’s reputation. You have to set the record straight!” “The Bennett family’s reputation…”
Clara repeated those words softly, then suddenly laughed, the sound full of self-mockery and coldness.
So, in his heart, his former little sister was no longer as important as the Bennett family’s reputation.
He was protecting Olivia now, not her, Clara Bennett.
“I won’t set the record straight.”
Clara’s smile faded, and her eyes returned to their usual calmness, even with a hint of indifference.
A flash of disappointment crossed Victor’s eyes. He never imagined that the soft, cute little sister he remembered from childhood could become so stubborn.
“Fine, then I’ll call Ethan myself and let him know that you
terminated his pregnancy to frame Olivia!”
“I want to see if you can still use the Carter family’s influence to make things difficult for Olivia after he knows the truth.”
Clara stood there, watching Victor’s tense profile, feeling no panic, only an icy calm.
“Then go ahead and call him.”
She had wanted to divorce Ethan for a long time, so whether this matter was exposed or not made no difference to her. Besides, when Ethan forced her to be a surrogate, he should have known that if she found out about it, she would never keep the baby.
If he really wanted to pursue it, she wouldn’t mind publicizing the scandal of surrogacy. Then, she wouldn’t be the only one who would lose face.
However, looking at the person who used to be the closest to her, now threatening her for Olivia’s sake, Clara’s heart still felt like it was being pricked by tiny needles, aching all over.
The phone screen lit up, and Ethan Carter’s number was clearly visible on the screen. Victor’s fingertip was already hovering over the call button.
Olivia felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest. She suddenly stepped forward and pressed down on his wrist.
Her fingertips trembled slightly, but she forced herself to appear calm.”Victor, forget it.”
Victor frowned and turned back, his eyes filled with confusion.”Why?”
“Ethan Carter values this child. If he finds out Clara Bennett aborted it without permission, he might retaliate against the Bennett family.” Olivia Bennett lowered her gaze, concealing the panic in her eyes, and softened her tone, “Didn’t you say Dad wants to re-establish the partnership with the Carter family?”
“What if this ruins the chance and Dad blames you?”
“Let’s give her another chance.”
Olivia looked up, her eyes slightly red, conveying just the right amount of grievance, “I just don’t want the Carter family to target me anymore.” “Clara is angry right now. Once she calms down, we can talk to her. As long as she can convince Ethan to stop targeting me, that’s all I ask.” Looking at her fragile state, Victor Bennett remembered the grievances she had suffered these past few days, and his tense expression eased slightly.

He pondered for a moment, realizing Olivia’s words made sense. Besides standing up for her, he came to Chicago this time because their father had heard that the Carter Group had secured a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense and wanted to re-establish their cooperation.
It wouldn’t be worth it to jeopardize that over this.
However, if he could distance himself and Olivia from Clara in front of Ethan, thus preventing the Carter Group’s anger from spreading.
Then he would still tell Ethan about it.
He had seen all the care and concern Diane Bennett had shown him over the years.
And after all these years, he’d come to see Olivia as a sister, and there was no way he’d stand by and watch her suffer such an injustice.
He put his phone away, casting a cold glare at Clara.”I’m giving you more time to think this over, for Olivia’s sake.”
With that, he looked at Olivia, his eyes filled with concern. “You’re too sensible for your own good, sweetheart. That’s why you end up suffering
so much.”
“It’s okay, big brother.”
Olivia smiled softly.”Let’s go.”
She eagerly pulled Victor away, glancing back at Clara with a hint of defiance in her eyes.
As long as Victor was on her side, even if she couldn’t tell Ethan about Clara’s abortion today, she would definitely make sure he found out eventually.
Then, let’s see who would protect Clara!
Clara met Olivia’s gaze and smirked.
It seemed Olivia was worried about Victor finding out about the things she’d done. She must have forgotten that Ethan wasn’t the only one with the security footage from back then. If she wanted it, getting her hands on it would be a piece of cake.
Olivia had no idea that her constant harassment had made Clara lose all patience with her.
Clara breathed a sigh of relief as she and Victor exited Nova AI, only to run smack into Sophia Davis.
Sophia couldn’t help but feel resentment upon seeing Olivia.
If Olivia hadn’t implied, intentionally or not, that she was Ethan’s girlfriend, Sophia would never have believed it and resigned from Lewis Al to curry favor with Ethan when Olivia left.
She wouldn’t have been ostracized in Carter Group’s R&D department after Olivia harmed Clara and was kicked out by Ethan, leaving Sophia to pick up the pieces of her work on Project Blade.
Furthermore, her voluntary departure from Lewis Al had displeased Professor Lewis, leaving her with nowhere to go now.
But the man beside Olivia exuded an extraordinary aura, clearly someone Sophia couldn’t afford to offend. Sophia forced a smile.”Ms.
Bennett.”
Olivia caught the coldness in her tone, knowing Sophia blamed her for getting caught up in her mess. She took the initiative, stepping forward and pulling Sophia aside.
“Sophia, don’t blame me. I’m the one who got you involved in all of this.”
She then shifted her tone, speaking sincerely, “I’m now working at Stellar Horizon AI, and I’ll find a way to get you a job there.”
Sophia was tempted. Stellar Horizon Al was under the umbrella of Walker Venture Partners, backed by the Walker family. Joining them would indeed be more promising than staying at the Carter Group.
Olivia added, “However, it can’t be rushed. Stellar Horizon and Nova AI are in fierce competition, and the Carters are targeting me because of what happened before. I need to gain a firm foothold at Stellar Horizon first.”
Olivia’s intention was merely to appease Sophia for the moment, to prevent her from saying something she shouldn’t in front of Victor
Bennett.
But Sophia interpreted her words in a completely different light.
She recalled the mysterious person who had been contacting her, promising that if she could leak some of Blade’s R&D data, Nova Al would suffer a painful market loss due to the leak.
She had already collected a considerable amount of data, and had been hesitant. But hearing Olivia’s words now, and thinking about her own situation, a look of determination flashed in her eyes.
She looked up at Olivia and smiled.”Don’t worry, Olivia. Something big is about to happen at Nova AI. I’m sure you’ll be able to gain a firm foothold at Stellar Horizon before long.”
“Don’t forget about me then, okay?”

Olivia didn’t understand what she meant by that. She just smiled.”Don’t worry, I won’t forget you.”
Seeing Sophia walk into Nova Al, Olivia hurried over to Victor, noticing the probing look in his eyes as he stood there. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly explained.
“That was a colleague from the research institute. She came to the Carter Group with me, but now she’s been affected by my situation and the Carter Group could only assign her to work at Nova AI. We just chatted for a bit.”
Seeing her worried expression, Victor assumed she was concerned about Sophia. He frowned slightly, feeling he needed to clarify things with Ethan as soon as possible.
With that in mind, he took out his phone and sent a message to his assistant, asking him to schedule a meeting with Ethan for the afternoon.
He looked up and saw a somewhat familiar figure brush past him. Victor turned to look.
“What are you looking at, bro?”
Olivia glanced back but only saw Ryan Walker’s back.
“Nothing.”
Victor shook his head.
That person should be abroad recently. What would he be doing in Chicago? Maybe he was mistaken.
On the other side, Clara watched Olivia and Victor walk away, narrowing her eyes. She took out her phone to call security and have them pull up the surveillance footage.
A large hand appeared from behind her, the slender fingers easily snatching the phone from her grasp.
Clara turned her head, surprised to find Ryan Walker standing there.
Ryan turned off Clara’s phone screen and placed it back in her hand, looking at her with a smile.”I’ll take care of this.”
Clara was taken aback, raising an eyebrow in surprise.”You know what I was going to do?”
Ryan gave a wry smile.”They say a lion doesn’t turn around when bitten by a dog, but I think not fighting back and slapping them down after being bitten is the dumbest thing you can do.”
He had just walked in and seen Olivia and another man leaving. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that she had come to stir up
“If someone bullies you, you hit back.”
“No matter who she is, no matter where she is, you have to beat her until she submits, only then will she stop bothering you.”
Something deep inside her seemed to sink a little.
trouble again.
In Clara’s past, whether she was living under the Andersons’ roof or being looked down upon after marrying into the Carters, she had always been used to silence and accepting grievances.
She was used to doing a little more, enduring a little more, to keep everyone peaceful and happy.
This was the first time she had learned to fight back, to use evidence to get revenge on Olivia,
She thought others would think that her actions would make things spiral out of control, that she was being petty.
But Ryan was the first person to teach her that she had to fight back when she was wronged.
Clara looked at Ryan. It was the first time she had scrutinized this man so seriously, and she discovered that the color of his pupils was so deep, and her reflection was so clear in them.
Ryan’s large hand brushed her head as if by accident, his voice almost inaudible, “Clara, you can try to trust me a little more.
Trust him… a little more?
Clara digested Ryan’s words in her mind, trying to figure out what he meant.
Ryan had obviously moved on to the next topic. He took out his phone and called his assistant, asking him to check the surveillance footage from that day.
After hanging up, he looked at Clara, “That way, we won’t stir up trouble.”
“I don’t want any more complications, or anyone else to hurt you.”
“Since that’s the case, I might as well handle this.”
Meeting Ryan’s burning and sincere gaze, Clara shifted her eyes away in a fluster, and coughed.
“How’s your injury?”
“Almost healed.”

Ryan noticed her embarrassment, smiled, and didn’t call her out on it,”Can’t always have you holding on alone.”
“Hand over your data to me in a bit, then take a couple of days off.”
By the time they finished syncing the data, it was almost evening. Clara stepped out of the R&D lab, and her phone immediately buzzed to life now that the signal block was gone.
Seeing an unknown number, she almost hung up, but noticed it had called several times that afternoon.
“Hello? Who is this?”
Ethan’s deep voice came through the receiver, laced with a hint of barely concealed excitement, “It’s me.”
“I’m waiting for you in the parking lot downstairs at Nova AI. I made a reservation at a restaurant to celebrate your birthday with you.”
Clara realized it was indeed her birthday. She’d been so caught up in the project that she’d completely forgotten. She didn’t expect Ethan to remember.
“Sorry, I’m busy.”
Even so, she still didn’t want to go.
“It’s my grandfather’s wish.”
Ethan’s voice held a note of urgency, as if afraid Clara would refuse again,”And I need to talk to you about who was behind the drugging incident seven years ago. I know who did it!”
“Clara, I need to see you, now!”
