Chapter 80
The next morning, when Robert Anderson woke up, he saw a message from Natalie Parker, a smirk crossing his face.
Just as he’d anticipated, Natalie Parker had come knocking after digging up dirt on him and Clara.
He dialed Natalie’s number, a smile deepening in his eyes when she readily agreed to meet.
“Ms. Parker, unfortunately, I have several crucial meetings today and can’t find a spare moment.”
“Unless of course, you’d prefer to schedule something with my wife?”
Natalie Parker knew perfectly well that Robert was playing hardball, but with her needing a favor, she couldn’t afford to object.”That’s perfectly fine.”
“I’m just wondering when Mrs. Anderson might be available?”
She couldn’t afford to object. Last night, she’d called Ethan countless times and sent message after message, but all in vain.
To win back Ethan, the Anderson family was her only way in.
Hearing Robert hang up, Patricia, seated at her vanity, turned to him and asked, “Why don’t you meet her yourself?”
Robert slowly got out of bed and headed into the bathroom.”She’s the one begging us for an alliance. We can’t afford to come off as trying to suck up to her.”
He saw it clearly last night: Ethan’s heart wasn’t with Natalie. That being the case, Natalie was nothing more than a tool to be exploited; there was no need to curry favor with her.
“When you meet with her later, don’t say too much. First, listen to what she wants to do and gauge her intentions.”
Patricia Anderson smoothed the cream on her face.”Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.”
In a private room at the cafe, Natalie Parker had already been waiting for a while when Patricia Anderson arrived.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Parker, for keeping you waiting.”
Patricia Anderson, dressed in a well-tailored silk dumpling dress, gracefully sat down across from her.
“Not at all, it’s me who’s disturbing Mrs. Anderson’s peace.”
Natalie Parker forced a smile in the face of Patricia Anderson’s deliberate tardiness.
“Yesterday, Mr. Anderson mentioned wanting me to help persuade Eth to stop making things difficult for you.”
“I wonder, what misunderstanding is there between Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Anderson, and Ms. Bennett?”
Patricia Anderson looked up, knowing that she was deliberately flaunting her closeness to Ethan Carter. A faint smile played on her lips as she responded with a question instead of an answer.
“I heard that Mr. Carter put a lot of effort into helping Ms. Parker secure a collaboration with Nova AI. I imagine Ms. Parker must be very important to Mr. Carter, wouldn’t you say?”
Natalie Parker paused, a flash of anger in her eyes. “You’re joking, Mrs. Anderson. Of course, Mrs. Bennett is the most important person to Eth.”
“I bet he’d give her anything she wants right now, wouldn’t he?”
She deliberately praised Clara to heighten Patricia’s sense of crisis.
Patricia did feel a tightness in her chest, but her face remained composed. She picked up her glass, took a slow, deliberate sip, and only spoke after setting the glass back down..
“Indeed, Mr. Carter is very protective of our Clara right now. Even after she lost the baby, he didn’t blame her.”
“However, the Carter family doesn’t know that she had an abortion on her own.”
“You have to admit, she’s got guts. Luckily, we found out in advance and happened to have acquaintances at the Hospital, which allowed us to deceive the Carter family.”
These words were like a bomb exploding in Natalie’s ears. It took nearly all her strength to suppress the urge to flip the table.
That was her child, and the only bargaining chip she had, after planning for so many years, to reconnect with Ethan!
Clara actually had an abortion and got rid of the child herself?
That venomous woman, how dare she?!
“Why would she want to abort the child?”
“Shhh-”
Patricia quickly made a silencing gesture, glancing around.

“Keep your voice down, Natalie. If this gets out, the Carter family will lose face. I’m only telling you because I trust you.”
Natalie, however, seemed deaf to Patricia’s words, her chest swelling with barely contained hatred.
“Does James Carter know about this?” she asked.
Surely he must, right?
Could it be that James Carter’s hospitalization was related to this very issue?
In that case, why not make it all come true and ensure that Ethan loathed Clara completely!
“Patricia, you mentioned having acquaintances at the Hospital. I was wondering if you could find out the duty roster for the medical staff on duty in the old man’s ward?”
Alarm bells went off in Patricia’s head.”What are you planning to do?”
If anything happened to James Carter because of Clara’s actions, the Carter family wouldn’t let them off the hook.
Natalie smiled.”The old man values his descendants above all else. If he were to find out that Clara had an abortion on he’d still accept her as his granddaughter-in-law?”
her own,
do you think
“Without the Carter family’s protection, what could Clara possibly do to you?”
Patricia’s heart skipped a beat, but her face remained impassive.”If Mr. Carter were to find out about this…”
Natalie cut her off.”This has nothing to do with you, and you know nothing about it.”
Patricia stared at her for a few seconds.”Alright, I’ll see what I can do, but this needs to be done discreetly, without a single mistake.”
“Don’t worry, Patricia.”
Natalie smiled.”Once I have the schedule, I’ll take care of the rest.”
Watching Patricia’s retreating figure, Natalie’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of sinister determination.
Once Patricia helped her get the schedule, she would become her accomplice, and the Anderson family would naturally have to cover for her.
In the hospital, Clara woke up in bed and turned to look at Lila in the next bed.
Seeing that the flush on her small face had faded and her breathing was much steadier, Clara breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. Getting up, she noticed a good luck charm on the pillow. She picked it up and looked at it. It seemed to be from a convent. She blinked, her long eyelashes concealing the emotions in her eyes.
After a long while, a soft laugh escaped her lips.
Good luck charms from the convent weren’t easy to come by.
But what good was it now?
A good luck charm couldn’t be thrown away carelessly, especially something from a church. One couldn’t desecrate the divine. Clara casually put the charm into her pocket, got out of bed, left the room, and went to the doctor’s office.

After confirming that Lila was no longer in any danger and could be discharged after a few days of observation, Clara was completely relieved.
“Ma’am.”
As she left the doctor’s office, someone called out to her. Clara turned around, a surprised expression on her face as she recognized James Carter’s assistant.
“Assistant Evans, what are you doing here?”
Assistant Evans was a close aide to the old man, known for his shrewdness. He wouldn’t reveal his hand until he was sure why Clara was there. Still, she had to give the old man’s people some respect. Clara smiled and offered an explanation, “Lila had a high fever last night and had to be hospitalized.”
“Please don’t mention this to the old man. I don’t want him to worry.”
Assistant Evans had spent most of his life working for James Carter, so his priority was naturally the old man’s health. He nodded in agreement. However, remembering the old man’s instructions from the previous night, he hesitated for a moment before deciding to tell Clara the truth. “Y chromosome gene mutation, a family inheritance?”
Clara’s mind went blank for a moment as she processed Assistant Evans’ words.
“How could it be genetic? Does that mean the old man…”
Assistant Evans adjusted his glasses.”The old man is lucky to have only shown symptoms at his age.”

I came here to contact a pediatrician to see if we can schedule a checkup for young Lucas.”
Seeing the distress on Clara’s face, Assistant Evans assumed she was worried about Lucas Carter, and explained:
“Mrs. Carter, this mutation is incredibly subtle and difficult to detect through routine check-ups. We’re still investigating the potential triggers, which could be linked to environmental factors, stress, underlying health conditions, or a combination of things. It’s hard to say for sure at this point.”
“So, there’s a chance that Ethan, Lucas, and Ryan could all be carrying this?”
Clara’s gaze drifted off. More than Ethan and Lucas, she was worried about Ryan, who also had Carter blood running through his veins.
“It’s possible.”
Assistant Evans glanced down at Mr. Carter’s test results.”That’s why I’m making it a priority to get Mr. Carter and Lucas in for testing as soon as possible.”
Clara pursed her lips.
Only Ethan and Lucas? What about Ryan?
Thinking it, she voiced the question aloud.
Assistant Evans hesitated. Mr. Carter hadn’t mentioned Ryan, and he wasn’t comfortable taking it upon himself to make that decision.
“These genetic tests are tricky to schedule. I’ve only been able to secure two slots for now.”
“Could Ethan’s spot be given to Ryan instead?”
Clara must have had her reasons for asking.”Ryan sustained injuries during his service and needs to be checked out. Plus, the project he’s overseeing is crucial to national security. We can’t afford any delays.”
“I’ll figure something out for Ethan’s genetic testing later.”
Despite Clara’s confident tone, Assistant Evans simply smiled, maintaining a polite yet distant demeanor.”Mrs. Carter, I am Mr. Carter’s assistant. We each have our roles and responsibilities. That’s the first rule I learned when I started working for the Carter family.”
It was a polite refusal, considering Ryan Walker’s current ambiguous status.
Clara understood. She realized she had been presumptuous. Ceasing to press Assistant Evans, she smiled. “I was remiss in my Let’s proceed as Mr. Carter directed. Thank you, Assistant Evans. I appreciate your hard work.”
After bidding farewell to Assistant Evans, Clara pulled out her phone and dialed Mia Thompson’s number.
“Mia, can you help me get in touch with someone who can arrange a genetic test?”
consideration.
Clara remembered that Mia’s previous company specialized in genetic testing. While their technology might not match that of overseas labs, it was among the best in the country.
If they could conduct a targeted test, the results should be comparable to those from abroad.
Now that she was aware of the situation and the Carter family wasn’t considering Ryan Walker, she had to take matters into her own hands. After all, Ryan Walker had helped her several times.
“Okay.”
Having hung up, Clara went back into the room to find Ethan at the sofa, working on his laptop while glancing at Lila’s IV drip from time to
time.
He looked up at the sound of the door opening, his eyes showing fatigue.
“Where did you go?”
Clara walked to the bedside to check on Lila, casually slipping the good-luck charm Ethan had gotten for her into the little girl’s blanket.
Since her back was turned to Ethan, he didn’t notice what she did.
Clara said flatly, “Lila’s fever has stabilized, and we’re about to be discharged. You can go and take care of your business; there’s no need for you to stay here.”
Ethan was about to say something, but his phone suddenly rang.
He glanced at the screen and answered, “Speak.”
Whatever was said on the other end made him frown deeply. He shut his laptop and turned to Clara.
“Sorry, something urgent came up at work; I have to go take care of it. Call me if you need anything.”
He paused mid-sentence, then quickly added, “It’s a work thing, nothing to do with Natalie.”
Clara hadn’t wanted to respond to Ethan at all, and she felt that it was none of her business where he went or who he was with; he didn’t need to report to her.

But then Clara remembered the genetic testing, the possibility that Ethan might develop the illness in the future. The refusal was on the tip of her tongue, but she paused, changing it to a faint “Okay.
Seeing her actually acknowledge him for once, Ethan couldn’t help but smile, instinctively reaching out to ruffle her hair.
Clara sidestepped him, leaving Ethan’s hand hanging in the air.
“Just go.”
The atmosphere between them was subtly awkward. Ethan’s hand lingered in the air for a moment, before he awkwardly retracted it.
He glanced at Lila in the hospital bed, then instructed the nanny standing by the door, “Keep a close eye on them, call me immediately if anything happens.”
The nanny responded, and Ethan turned and quickly left.
Clara watched him go, noticing a slight limp in his step, likely from injuring his knees when he prayed for the charm.
She stood there, her long lashes lowered, no one knew what she was thinking.
After a moment, her thoughts returned, Clara remembered James Carter, who was in a room upstairs.
She hadn’t visited him in days. The old man was getting old; every visit counted.
Clara Bennett instructed the maid to keep an eye on Lila Walker before heading toward James Carter’s room. Reaching the floor where James was staying, Clara softened her steps and pushed open the slightly ajar door. The room was eerily silent, making the beeping of the heart monitor sound exceptionally loud.
Assistant Evans was watching over James. Seeing Clara, he immediately stood up and, in a hushed tone, gestured for Clara to be quiet.”Mr. Carter just fell asleep. The nurse went downstairs to get his medication.”
Clara nodded, slowed her pace, and stepped forward to tuck in the blanket around James. Assistant Evans then said a little awkwardly, “Mrs. Carter, I… I need to use the restroom. Maybe you could…”
Nature called, and Clara smiled.”Go ahead.”
As she spoke, she glanced at her watch. “But I can only stay for half an hour at most. Lila is still downstairs, and the kids downstairs also need someone with them.”
Assistant Evans agreed, “That’s enough time.”
“If needed, there’s also the nurse. The nurse is one of us, trustworthy. Once she’s here, you can leave.”
After Assistant Evans left, Clara sat down beside James. Seeing him lying in bed, his face pale, his breathing faint, she could barely detect the rise and fall of his chest.
Clara glanced at the ECG monitor on the bedside table, and only after confirming everything was okay did she exhale. There was a book nearby, so she picked it up and started reading.
After about twenty minutes, Assistant Evans hadn’t returned, but the nurse had. Seeing that everything seemed fine and remembering Evans’s words about trusting the nurse, Clara gave a brief handover, sat for a few more minutes, and then left the old man’s room to check on Lila downstairs.

In a corner where no one was paying attention, just as Clara left the room, a figure in a nurse’s uniform appeared in the hallway.
The woman held a small remote control in her hand. As she passed the hallway camera, she pressed a button, and the flashing red light on the
camera went out.
She adjusted the mask on her face and looked around.
Making sure no one was watching her, she quickly walked into the old man’s room.
The woman and the nurse made eye contact. The nurse lowered her head and nodded, remaining silent, pretending she hadn’t seen anything. The woman walked to the bedside.
Looking at the old man lying in bed with an oxygen mask on, she reached up and pulled down the strap of her mask.
Revealing Natalie Parker’s face, twisted with excitement, the triumph in her eyes nearly overflowing.
Never did I imagine that the old man who once pointed his finger at me, calling me delusional for even thinking of dating Ethan, adamantly opposing our relationship, and even trying to bribe me to go abroad with money and promises, would end up like this.
Natalie chuckled softly.”Old man, so what if you looked down on me? Now you’ve been driven to this state by your precious granddaughter-in-law.”
She pulled out the scissors hidden in her pocket, walked to the bedside, raised them, and reached out.
But just as she touched the oxygen tube, the person in the bed stirred, his cloudy eyes cracking open a slit.”Clara…”

Natalie jumped back in surprise, but seeing James Carter’s unfocused gaze, clearly not fully awake, she slowly regained her composure, a smile tugging at her lips.
“James, take a good look.”
She leaned in close to James Carter’s ear, her smile cruel. “I’m not that bitch Clara, I’m Natalie l’arker. I’m back to see you.”
Hearing Natalie Parker’s voice, James Carter’s eyes cleared somewhat, a flicker of disgust appearing in them.
He had encountered too many women like Natalie Parker in his life, women who knew no bounds when it came to achieving their goals.
He opened his mouth and croaked twice, trying to summon the bodyguards to kick her out, but his voice was too weak, not even carrying beyond the confines of the room.
Natalie chuckled. “Don’t waste your energy, old man. There’s no one outside right now. A billboard just fell and shattered the glass downstairs; they’ve all gone to check it out.”
She turned her gaze back to James Carter.”Weren’t you the one who valued the Carter family’s descendants the most? How does it feel to know that Clara Bennett personally terminated a pregnancy?”
“Oh, that’s right, I forgot to tell you, that child was actually mine, a child between Ethan and me.”
“What was the point of your desperate attempts to prevent Ethan and me from being together back then? He still wanted to have a child with me.”
“And, to prevent the child from being born out of wedlock, he specifically had Clara undergo in vitro fertilization.”
These words hit James Carter like a bombshell, his pupils contracting in shock. His already faint breathing became rapid, a raspy wheezing escaping his throat.
He should have realized it sooner; the only woman Ethan would protect like that was Natalie Parker.
What he couldn’t believe was that even after giving Natalie Parker five million dollars, arranging a school for her abroad, and sending her overseas, he still hadn’t severed her connection with Ethan Carter!
His eyes blazed with fury, and he wanted to demand answers, to question why Natalie hadn’t honored their agreement.
But rage filled his chest, making it hard to breathe. He could only open his mouth in vain, making a hoarse, gasping sound.
Natalie watched him, taking short, shallow breaths, and her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.”Old man, I admit you used to be powerful, but now you’re old and can’t control Ethan anymore.”
“However, I still hope you can serve some purpose at the end of your life.”
She straightened up, her gaze fixed on the oxygen tube. Without hesitation, she cut the tube with scissors. The oxygen mask instantly deflated. Then, she yanked the call button’s connection cord.
After making sure everything was done, she patted the bed railing like a victor.”Enjoy this final moment, old man.”
“In your next life, remember to let me be your granddaughter-in-law, and there won’t be so many problems.”
With that, she cast one last look at the helpless old man in the bed and turned to leave.
A flicker of movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention – the hospital room door was now ajar, and a dark figure had darted past the opening.
