Chapter 90
Clara watched the grandmother and grandson, their words a rehearsed duet, and found it utterly ludicrous.
Truly, one becomes a product of their upbringing and their mentors.
Under Margaret’s tutelage, Lucas had already become a thorough pragmatist, prioritizing profit above all else!
It was clear that these belated apologies and promises were nothing more than attempts to secure the shares the old man had left her.
“Don’t you find it ridiculous to say these things now?”
She looked at Margaret, enunciating each word with deliberate force, “I am going to divorce Ethan Carter and leave the Carter family.
no matter what you say!”
With that, Clara turned and left, ignoring their unsightly expressions.
The elevator doors opened and closed.
Ethan hurried over, his eyes narrowing as he took in Clara’s cold expression and the stunned grandparents in the distance. He reached out and gripped her wrist.
“Where are you going? Grandpa, he’s…”
Before he could finish, Clara yanked her hand away, looking up at him with icy eyes.
Her eyes were devoid of warmth, as if he were a stranger.
“Where I go is none of your business. Your grandfather is gone. Hurry up if you want to see him off.”
Two brief notification pings sounded simultaneously. Ethan didn’t glance at his phone, focusing solely on Clara, a sense of dread rising
within him.
Grandpa passed away?
What about him and Clara…
Clara glanced down at her phone screen, rereading the message several times, a hint of satisfaction appearing on her face.
It was a court summons, notifying her that their divorce hearing was scheduled for three days from now.
A smile touched her lips as she looked up at Ethan, reminding him, “Check your phone. See you in court in three days.”
Hearing this, Ethan’s pupils constricted, and his aura turned cold.
He opened his mouth, wanting to ask Clara if they really had to go this far.
But Clara didn’t give him the chance to speak, turning and walking towards the elevator, leaving only a resolute figure behind. Margaret, who was behind him, watched this scene. The expectation that Ethan could keep Clara also vanished the moment she saw him appear, and her face showed a hint of disappointment.
She quickly walked to Ethan’s side, her face urgent.“Eth, did you hear that?”
“Clara isn’t just saying it, she really wants to divorce you. You need to think of a way to stop
her!”
Ethan glanced at her coldly, his voice low.“What did Grandpa say when he woke up?”

Margaret thought of the old man’s last words. “He said that Clara didn’t hurt him.”
“We misunderstood her before…”
“Yeah, I know she didn’t hurt Grandpa.”
Ethan glanced at the elevator doors that had already closed.
Margaret was stunned. He knew all along?
Then does he know that Natalie Parker was the one who hurt the old man?
Mem
Margaret shuddered as she remembered how Ethan had been with Natalie before the wedding, fighting against the old man to avoid marrying Clara.
Margaret shuddered.
The thought that Natalie Parker had harmed her father–in–law, causing her to misunderstand Clara, leading to the situation between Clara and Ethan as it was now, and even resulting in Clara taking the Carter family’s shares with her upon remarriage, filled her with a burning desire to tear Natalie apart!
She just made me want to rip her apart!
But if she told Ethan now, considering their past relationship and the fact that Natalie had once saved his life, he might not even believe her.
Thinking this over, Margaret steadied herself and swallowed the words she’d been about to say.
“Did Grandpa say anything else?”
Ethan’s gaze was deep as he looked towards the hospital room.
Margaret pursed her lips, hesitated for a long moment, and finally shook her head.“N–no, he didn’t say anything else. He just gave Clara some shares.”
It seemed she would have to deal with Natalie herself.
“Okay.”
Ethan didn’t press further, but silently walked into the hospital room.
Meanwhile, Clara walked out of the hospital and got straight into her car. As soon as she started the engine, her phone rang. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
She hesitated for a moment, worried it might be a work–related call, and answered it anyway.
“Clara, it’s me. Do you remember me?”
A slightly aged male voice came from the other end of the line, tinged with a hint of caution.
Clara’s body instantly stiffened.
It had been over a decade since her mother’s death that she had last spoken to Richard Bennett. She had thought she’d forgotten his voice, but after only a few words, she recognized him instantly.
She frowned, instinctively wanting to hang up, but Richard continued, “I’ve heard about what happened with the Carters. Are you… alright?”

“Do you need me to bring in doctors from overseas to look at the old man?”
Clara raised an eyebrow. “No need. James is dead.”

Silence fell on the other end of the line. After a long moment, Richard seemed to process the news of James Carter’s passing, his voice
now tinged with urgency.
“What? James is… Is Ethan giving you trouble? Is he going to try to put you in jail?”
Clara scoffed at his words.“Don’t worry, even if I go to jail, it won’t affect you.”
“Besides, James made it clear that I had nothing to do with it.”
Hearing this, Richard breathed a sigh of relief, but before he could say anything, Clara continued, “I know you want to work with the Carters, so don’t call me again.”
“Ethan and I are getting a divorce. The Carters‘ affairs, the Bennetts‘ affairs, have nothing to do with me.”
“That won’t do!”
Richard hadn’t even finished the sentence when he heard those words, causing him to cough several times.
“This is a critical time for the Bennett family to collaborate with the Carters! What if Ethan Carter terminates the partnership if you two divorce?”
“Why is that my problem?”
Even though she had long lost any affection for Richard Bennett, Clara still frowned uncomfortably at his words.
“The collaboration between the Bennett and Carter families concerns Olivia; it has nothing to do with me.”
18
“Whether or not I divorce Ethan Carter is none of your concern.”
“How can you say
that?”
Richard’s voice was laced with annoyance.
“Don’t forget, you’re still a Bennett!”
“Your mother left you shares in the Bennett family. You have an obligation to think of the family!”
“How can you face your mother after what you’ve done…”
Clara didn’t let him finish; she hung up and tossed her phone aside.
Leaning back in her chair, she closed her eyes, and the image of her mother involuntarily surfaced in her mind.
Richard hadn’t even attended her mother’s funeral and hadn’t visited her grave in all these years. How dare he even mention her name! She was determined to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death and make sure that everyone who had betrayed and hurt her mother would pay the price!
On the other end of the line, Richard was so infuriated by Clara hanging up on him that he slammed his phone onto the desk.
If Clara hadn’t cut off contact with them, how else would he have found out she had married into the Carter family until recently!
Why would he ever allow Olivia to get close to Ethan!
He had hoped to use Olivia to get close to the Carters and collaborate with the U.S. Department of Defense, but instead, he made Ethan

dislike Olivia and even caused Clara to want a divorce from Ethan!
No, he had to have a proper conversation with her face–to–face.
Besides…
Seemingly thinking of something else, Richard picked up another phone and dialed Victor Bennett’s number.
Menu
“Victor, I just got word that James Carter passed away. Clara’s talking about divorcing Ethan. I’m flying to Chicago tonight to talk to her
about this.”
“But we can’t put all our eggs in one basket. The U.S. Department of Defense is looking for partners to commercialize some of the ‘Blade‘ project data. I need you to set up a meeting with the head of R&D.”
“If we can swing that, we won’t need to go through the Carter Group at all.”
“Remember, this needs to be kept quiet. Move fast.”
Hearing Richard’s instructions, Victor didn’t dare delay.“Got it,” he replied.
“One more thing.”
One more thing,” Richard added after a moment’s thought, “Take good care of Olivia. We’ll have dinner together tonight. Ask her what she’d like to eat and make a reservation. Don’t let her feel wronged anymore.”
After hanging up, Richard sat in his chair, a dark look in his eyes.
He had to secure the cooperation rights for Project Blade, and he couldn’t afford to lose the Carter family’s support either!
At the hospital, Margaret oversaw the arrangements for the old man’s funeral. She glanced at Ethan, who was on the phone in the distance, a shadow crossing her face.
Another call from Natalie Parker!
What could be so important that it kept Ethan from seeing the old man one last time?
“Ma’am, we’ve found out.”
Her phone lit up with a message from the private investigator.
“Natalie Parker was in a car accident this morning and is currently receiving treatment at Conray International Private Hospital.”
Margaret put away her phone and headed toward the elevator.
“Ma’am, where are you going?”
The bodyguard saw her leaving and asked, “Should I have the car prepared for you?”
Margaret glanced at the bodyguard.
Ethan couldn’t find out about her visit to Natalie Parker.
“No, if Eth asks, just tell him I had some personal matters to attend to and will be back shortly.”
She was going to ask Natalie exactly why she had truly harmed Ethan, the old man, and the Carter family!
And she used to like her so much, always thinking of her!
When her mother passed away from a serious illness and her father wasn’t around, she felt sorry for her and even had the old man

sponsor her.
How could she do this to her after all that!
Margaret left the hospital, hailed a cab, and headed to the address and room number the private investigator had sent her.
Seeing Natalie in a VIP suite only fueled her anger.
Ethan must have arranged this room for her!

She pushed open the door and saw Natalie lying in bed, wrapped in bandages, but her face didn’t look like someone who was seriously injured.
Leaning against the doorframe, she watched her for half a minute, noticing Natalie’s eyelashes fluttering slightly. It only made her more convinced that Natalie wasn’t as badly hurt as she claimed, and was exaggerating to make Ethan feel sorry for her.
Which resulted in Ethan missing his grandfather’s final moments!
If word got out, people would tear him apart!
“Natalie Parker, what are you pretending for?!”
Margaret marched forward and yanked the covers off Natalie.“You’re a cheap bitch who seduces other people’s husbands!”
Her voice, amplified by rage, echoed down the empty hallway.
Patients from nearby rooms came to see what all the commotion was about.
Natalie heard the footsteps and thought Ethan had come to see her. She was about to pretend to wake up, but then she heard Margaret’s
voice.
Her heart sank, and a genuine pallor of a seriously injured patient spread across her face.
Hadn’t Ethan sent Margaret abroad?
How could she suddenly be here?
And why was she acting this way toward her?
Could it be… she didn’t get to see James before he died?
Sure enough, the next second, Margaret shouted, “Natalie Parker! You’re a murderer!”
“Did you think you could fool everyone by faking illness and keeping Eth here? James said it himself when he woke up – you cut his oxygen tube!”
“How could you be so evil, trying to pin this on my daughter–in–law and make my son send her to jail!”
Hearing this, the patients and their families who had gathered outside the door to see what was happening peeked their heads in, curiously sizing up Natalie. Whispers spread like wildfire.
Natalie felt utterly humiliated. Suppressing the panic in her heart, she pulled the blanket tighter around herself. “Margaret, what are you saying? You must be misunderstanding something.”
“When have I ever harmed James?”
“Besides, I really was in a car accident today. My lower leg is fractured. I can’t even walk…”
“Misunderstanding?”

Margaret Carter scoffed, stepping forward to grab Natalie Parker’s collar, attempting to drag her off the bed.“The old man said it was you with his own mouth! Did you think your petty cleverness could fool everyone?”
“If it weren’t for you, why else would my daughter–in–law insist on divorcing my son?”
“You’re nothing but a jinx, you cursed your own mother to death, and got your own father thrown in jail. You can’t stand seeing anyone else happy!”
Natalie Parker, gasping for air from the grip, tried to struggle, only to realize that, to make her act convincing, she had put casts on all her limbs, rendering her truly unable to move.
She could only say, “Auntie, please let go of me first. I really don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“Eth and I are just friends. I never intended to ruin his family, let alone harm Grandpa…”
“Yes, my father did kill someone in a drunk driving accident, but that wasn’t my fault. He faced the judgment of the law.”
“My mother got sick and passed away because she was taking care of me. How can you say such things…?”
Seeing her pale and pitiful face, some of the onlookers whispered, “Isn’t this old lady going too far? How could this girl, so badly injured, possibly commit murder?”
“Yeah, maybe there’s a misunderstanding. This scene is really unsightly.”
“Look how pitiful this girl is. How could the old lady lay her hands on her so heavily?”
“You don’t understand anything!”
Margaret Carter whipped around, yelling at the crowd, “My father–in–law said it was her with his own mouth!”
“Then call the police and have her arrested!”
Someone called out.
“If you don’t call the police yourself and just make a scene like this, doesn’t that just mean you don’t have any proof?”
Natalie, hearing this, froze. She glanced at the person who spoke, cursing them inwardly for being nosy.
Margaret didn’t miss the panic in her eyes, and it solidified her conviction.
“I’ll call the police then!”
Saying that, she pulled out her phone and dialed the police.
“Hello! Police? I need to report a crime!”
“At the orthopedic ward of Conray International Private Hospital, there’s a woman named Natalie Parker. She killed my father–in–law, and I want to accuse her of intentional homicide! You need to come and arrest her immediately!”
The crowd went completely silent, and everyone’s gaze was focused on Natalie.
Those who had been sympathizing with her now looked at her with a more scrutinizing eye.
If it was just a misunderstanding, why would the old woman dare to call the police and accuse her of murder?
Natalie Parker’s hands, clutching the blanket, trembled slightly. She could barely keep the expression on her face under control. She hadn’t expected Margaret Carter to actually call the police!
Margaret Carter hung up the phone and glared at Natalie Parker.“You like to play innocent, don’t you?”

“Just wait until the police get here. Then we’ll see how well you can keep up the act! I’m going to make you pay for what you’ve done!”
A few moments later, hurried footsteps echoed in the hallway, along with the police officers‘ voices: “Who called to report a crime?
Someone said there was a murder here?”
Margaret Carter immediately rushed forward, pointing at Natalie Parker in the hospital bed.
“Officers, it’s her! Natalie Parker! She killed my father–in–law. You have to arrest her!”
