Chapter 92
“Strict is good!”
Richard clapped his hands together, his eyes gleaming with excitement after hearing what Victor said.
“This shows how much importance they’re placing on this project. As long as we can secure the cooperation rights, the Bennett family’s decline can be completely reversed!”
“Maybe even the Carters will have to watch their step around us.”
The thought made Richard uncontrollably happy, and he was still discussing it with Victor even after meeting with Olivia.
Listening to their excited chatter, Olivia’s heart tightened.
The Bennett family wants to cooperate with Blade?
She had learned during her investigation with the National Security Agency that Clara was one of the people in charge of the Blade project.
Once they reach a cooperation, if Dad and Victor find out about Clara’s identity, would they start to value her, maybe even bring her back to the Bennett family?
“It seems I’ve misjudged you all these years.”
Richard patted Victor on the shoulder, looking pleased.
“You haven’t been in Chicago for long, yet you’ve already managed to get in good with Director Collins and contacted the project lead.”
“It seems that I will have you take over things at Bennett Group in the future, not just Grand Horizon Tech.”
He gestured at Victor, then looked at Olivia, “With the two of you siblings supporting the Bennett family, I can rest easy.”
“If only Clara could be as worry–free as you two.”
Overjoyed at Richard’s approval, Victor chuckled when he heard him mention Clara, remembering the things she’d said before.
“The Andersons have pretty much ruined Clara over the years. She’s stubborn as hell. Ethan called the cops on her, and when I went to see her, she was nothing but sarcastic. She even brought up that whole thing about Aunt Bennett faking the audio from the dashcam.”
Hearing this, Olivia’s grip on her chopsticks tightened, her long lashes concealing the panic in her eyes.
She knew about the car accident that killed Clara’s mother.
She also knew exactly how that recording played for Richard and Victor came to be.
She never expected it to resurface after all these years!
And from what Victor was saying, Clara already knew something was off about the recording?
She looked up at Richard, watching his reaction to the news.
“She actually said that?”
Richard scoffed loudly.“Accusing Diane of faking the recording.”
“She only had her hands on that recording for a few minutes. How could she have faked it in that time?”

Hearing that Richard didn’t believe it, Olivia secretly breathed a sigh of relief, only to hear Victor say, “Of course, I believe Aunt
Bennett.”
“She’s determined to divorce Ethan Carter right now; she’s probably saying all this because she wants to come back to the Bennett family.”
Thinking about what Clara had been through recently, Victor felt a little sorry for her. After all, she was his own sister, so he advised, “Dad, why don’t we…”
“Humph.”
How could Richard not understand what Victor meant? His face turned cold.“She caused her mother’s death. It’s been a weight on my heart for years.”
“She didn’t tell us when she married Ethan Carter, and now she’s determined to get a divorce. If we let her back into the Bennett family at this time, do we still want the Carter family’s cooperation?”
Thinking of this possibility, Richard narrowed his eyes.
No, if Clara really divorced Ethan Carter, then she must not get the shares her mother left behind!
Olivia listened to their conversation, her heart pounding.
Even if Richard doesn’t believe Clara now, once he finds out that Clara is the head of Blade, he might reinvestigate what happened back
then for the sake of the cooperation with Blade.
She has to tell her mother so she can prepare early.
With that thought, she glanced at Richard Bennett and her half–brother, still deep in work discussions, and texted Diane Bennett.
“Mom, Clara is starting to suspect the truth about our mother’s car accident.”
Back in Boston, at the Bennett family home.
Diane Bennett frowned at the message from Olivia. How could Clara possibly suspect anything about that?
She tapped her fingers lightly on the coffee table, her eyes cold. After a moment of contemplation, she picked up her phone and dialed an unfamiliar number.
A raspy male voice answered, “Hello?”
“It’s me.”
Diane Bennett’s voice was laced with frost.“I know you’ve been out for a while now. Keep a low profile, find a place to hide, and preferably, assume a new identity.”
“Why?”
The man asked, puzzled.“Isn’t that thing from back then all said and done?”
He had spent over a decade in prison for that money. Now that he was out, why should he hide?
“Someone is investigating the car accident from back then, and she’s already suspicious of me.”
Diane Bennett sensed the man’s reluctance and said sternly, “If you don’t want to be found, do as I say. If anyone finds out you were paid to do it, we can’t afford the consequences!”
“Alright, I understand.”

At the same time, Clara Bennett, who had just parked her car, received a call from Chris Evans.
“Ms. Bennett, I’ve looked into your mother’s car accident files and found the driver responsible”
“The driver’s name is Anthony Parker. He was driving under the influence when he hit and killed your mother, and was sentenced to 19 years for vehicular manslaughter. He got out a few years early for good behavior and is now living in Seaside City.”
“Following that lead, I also found that Anthony Parker’s account has been receiving wire transfers from an overseas account for years. It’s the same overseas account as the person who deliberately ran you over.”
“Don’t worry, now that we have a lead, we’ll keep digging.”
Hearing this, Clara gripped her phone tightly, her eyes turning cold.
The car accident back then and the one she’d just experienced were indeed connected!
“Thank you, Officer Chen.”
Hanging up, Clara rubbed her churchs. Her phone lit up again–a message from Attorney Brown.
She stepped into the elevator, opening the message.
“Ms. Bennett, I found out that the driver who caused your mother’s accident was from Seaside City. Coincidentally, Diane Bennett is
also from Seaside City.”
Clara paused, her fingers still on her phone. Her eyes turned icy, a mocking smile playing on her lips.
Diane Bennett… it was her all along! She was definitely involved in what happened back then!
It seemed she needed to make time to visit Seaside City and see Anthony Parker, the man who killed her mother all those years ago.
But the divorce hearing was only three days away.
Right now, nothing was more important to her than divorcing Ethan.
It looked like she would have to wait until after the divorce to make the trip.
She calculated the time as she stepped out of the elevator and dialed Attorney Brown’s number.
“Attorney Brown, I need you to send a couple of guys to Seaside City to keep an eye on Anthony Parker. Once this divorce is settled, I him a visit. Also, look into Diane Bennett’s whereabouts around the time he was released from prison.”
want to pay
“Understood, Ms. Bennett, I’ll arrange it immediately.”
She hung up and noticed two pairs of eyes on her. She looked up.
Two figures, one tall and one short, were standing by the entrance to her apartment.
Lila Walker, sensing the chill in her expression, fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, and whispered, “Auntie…”
“I said some things I shouldn’t have at the hospital. I’m sorry for causing you trouble, Auntie.”
“I didn’t know that the good luck charm wasn’t something you got for me, and yet you still gave it to me.”
“Uncle Carter seemed really upset about it. Did he make things difficult for you?”
Ever since Clara left the hospital that day, Lila knew that her words had not only failed to prove Clara’s alibi, but had also deepened the Carter family’s suspicions.

Ethan even resented Clara because of the good luck charm.

Later, hiding in a corner, she overheard Ethan calling the police to arrest Clara, and she became so anxious that she didn’t know what to
She fainted when she returned to the hospital room.
It wasn’t until she vaguely heard Ryan’s voice, and knew that Ryan had returned, that she felt a little relieved, because with Ryan around, those people wouldn’t be able to blame Clara for the death of Grandpa Carter.
“Auntie, I’m
sorry,
I didn’t mean to say that.”
The more Lila thought about it, the more heartbroken she became, and large tears streamed down her cheeks.“Auntie, please forgive
me…”
Originally, when Clara saw Lila, the coldness on her face had dissipated, and now seeing her crying so hard that she could barely breathe, she felt like her heart was breaking.
She quickly stepped forward, picked Lila up, kissed her face, and soothed, “Don’t cry, Auntie’s not angry.”
That day, she left the hospital in a fit of anger, and when she got back to Nova AI, she remembered that she had forgotten about Lila.
Clara had planned to visit Lila at the hospital after work, but she got picked up by the police before she even clocked out.
After that, one thing after another kept her occupied.
“Auntie’s been too busy and didn’t take care of you. Don’t blame Auntie, okay?”
“B–but, Auntie’s face was so scary just now.”
Lila sobbed.
“That was because of other things. Auntie wasn’t mad at you.”
Clara glanced at Ryan standing beside them, signaling him to do something.
Ryan scratched his nose, reluctantly tearing his gaze away from Clara, took Lila into his arms with one hand, and pulled a tissue from his pocket to wipe her face.
“No more crying. Weren’t we here today to apologize to Auntie and treat her to dinner?”
His reminder seemed to jog Lila’s memory, and she turned to Clara, “Auntie hasn’t had dinner yet, right? Dad and I prepared lots of yummy food. Will you come to our place to eat?”
“Okay.”
Clara smiled, seeing that she had stopped crying, and playfully tapped the tip of her nose.
Downstairs at the apartment building, Ethan sat in the driver’s seat, one hand resting on the steering wheel.
In the back seat, Lucas clutched his little dinosaur toy and asked in a small voice, “Dad, I just saw Mommy’s car drive into the underground parking lot. When are we going up?”
Ethan’s Adam’s apple bobbed, his gaze fixed on the entrance to the building, a rare hint of trepidation in his eyes.
Of course, he’d noticed Clara’s return, but remembering the resolute way she’d said, “Ethan, I’ll see you in court” that morning, he wasn’t sure if he should go up.

What could he even say if he did?
Would Clara even listen to him anymore?
After a long silence, he finally said softly, “Let’s go.”
He unbuckled his seatbelt, ready to get out, but out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of that familiar figure.
Only this time, there was also a tall figure holding a child beside her.
Merr
Clara, dressed in a beige trench coat, was looking up, saying something to the little girl in the man’s arms, a faint smile gracing her lips.
Lila had one arm around Ryan’s neck and was reaching out with her other hand, holding onto Clara.
Ryan effortlessly held Lila with one arm, his posture erect and confident. As they walked out of the building entrance, a gust of wind blew, and he reached out to adjust Clara’s collar, which had been ruffled by the wind, the gesture natural, as if he’d done it countless
times before.
Lila pouted, clearly displeased.
Daddy was so unfair! Her hair was blowing into her mouth, and he couldn’t even bother to fix it, too busy fussing over Auntie Clara.
If Daddy didn’t end up marrying Auntie Clara, she would never forgive him!
The trio walked out of the building side by side, turned a corner, and headed in the opposite direction. The dim courtyard lights cast a warm glow on them, making them look just like a family out for an evening stroll after dinner.
Once they were a good distance away, Ethan got out of the car, pulled out a cigarette, and tried to light it.
But whether it was due to his trembling hands or the strong wind, he couldn’t get the lighter to spark, no matter how many times he
tried.
Frustrated, he threw the lighter down hard. It hit the ground with a loud crack, making Lucas flinch.
Lucas was starting to regret coming with Ethan to apologize to Clara.
The scene he had just witnessed had stung Ethan, and also stirred up a feeling of unease within him.
Before, Mom’s gentle smiles were only for him. Even when she was with Dad, there was always a hint of distance.
But how long had it been since Mom had smiled at him like that?
Ethan Carter stared intently in the direction the three of them had gone. He suddenly realized how tender Clara Bennett’s smile was.
There was none of the restraint she showed at the Carter family’s Old Estate, none of the indifference she directed at him, only genuine joy radiating from her.
With that thought, Ethan Carter tugged irritably at his collar, got into the Bentley, and started the engine
Whether she was happy or not, it didn’t matter.
She had already married him and become his wife. He would never divorce her, no matter what she thought!
The black Bentley had arrived silently and departed just as silently.
All the way back, Ethan Carter drove at breakneck speed, scaring Lucas in the back seat so much that his little face turned pale as he gripped the seatbelt.
When the two returned to the Old Estate, Margaret Carter, seeing their faces as dark as thunderclouds, stood up from the sofa.

“Where did you take Luke? Why are you back
80 late? Did you have dinner?”
Ethan Carter didn’t answer. He took off his coat and handed it to the servant, gave her a cold look, and went straight upstairs.

That gaze was icy and piercing, with undisguised blame, causing Margaret Carter to take a step back involuntarily, turning to look at
Lucas.
“Where did your dad take you?”
“To see Mom.”
Clara’s words hit Margaret hard. She looked upstairs, then back at Lucas, who seemed listless. Her heart sank.
“What did your mom say? Does she still want a divorce?”
“They didn’t really talk about it.”
Lucas shook his head, a mix of emotions churning inside him as he thought about the smile on Clara’s face.
“Grandma, I actually think it would be better if Dad and Mom got divorced.”
It was clear Dad still had feelings for Mom, and even if they divorced, he probably wouldn’t remarry anytime soon.
If they separated, Dad wouldn’t be angry all the time and take it out on him.
Hearing him say that, Margaret sighed. If it weren’t for the shares the old man had left Clara, she would have wanted Ethan and Clara to divorce a long time ago.
But Clara clearly felt differently about Ryan Walker and his daughter. If they ended up together, and the two of them joined forces, Carter Group would definitely be in chaos.
“Madam, Assistant Evans is here. He says he has something for you.”
The butler’s voice brought Margaret back to reality. She smoothed out her skirt and pulled Lucas down to sit with her.
“Let him in.”
Assistant Evans entered the living room and handed Margaret the gold–lettered will.
“Madam, this is the will Mr. Carter Sr. made before he passed. One copy is at the notary office, another with the lawyer, and this one I brought here.”
“Mr. Carter Sr.’s intention was for this to be revealed after Ms. Bennett and Mr. Carter divorce.”
With little enthusiasm, Margaret Carter took the will and flipped it open absentmindedly.
The lawyer had come to the hospital after Mr. Carter Sr. passed away, so she was already aware of the will’s existence and that Clara Bennett was guaranteed to receive shares in the Carter Group,
But then, her eyes fell on a line within the will.
“Mr. Carter Sr. not only gave Clara shares, but he also recognized her as his goddaughter?!”
Which meant that as soon as Clara Bennett divorced Ethan Carter, she would become the god–sister of both Ethan Carter and Ryan Walker?
Realizing this, Margaret Carter’s voice trembled, “With this relationship, there’s no way Clara Bennett could marry Ryan Walker. The Walker family’s path to interfere with the company through marriage is completely cut off!”
