Chapter 374

The tension in the room hit its boiling point as Alexander and Ethan glared at each other. Richard even stood up and stepped toward Ethan with a threatening look, but Alexander put a hand on his bodyguard’s shoulder to stop him.

“Who is this, young man?” Stanley asked Polin and pointed at Ethan.

Polin frowned at Ethan. “That is my former son–in–law,” she answered in a flat voice.

To keep herself busy, Olivia headed to the fridge and began to create a fruit plate for the guests. As she was gathering the containers of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, Richard came up beside her.

“Can I make a suggestion?” he murmured in a low voice as he helped her carry the fruit over to the counter.

Olivia nodded, but she remained guarded. Unsure what he was going to say.

“Maybe you should send the rest of the guests away,” he said. “The air is thick with…tension.”

Olivia rolled her eyes and didn’t bother to reply. If he thought it was that easy, why didn’t he do it?

“Can you bring the coffee pot over to the table so people can serve themselves?” she asked in a bright voice.

Richard gave her a searching look, but she refused to meet his eyes. “Sure…”

Olivia kept her back turned as she prepared the plate of fruit. Five minutes later, Skylar announced that she and Aidyn must get going. She didn’t think that her son should get involved with Olivia if Alexander and Ethan were also vying for her heart. They were two of the most powerful men in New York.

Aidyn wanted to argue, but he had a surgery in the city scheduled soon anyway.

As they were walking out of the kitchen, Ethan had to open his big mouth.

“Good choice. Olivia wouldn’t want a boyfriend who lets his mommy fight his battles,” he said in

a loud voice.

The room fell silent as everyone looked between Aidyn and Ethan.

Olivia prayed that Aidyn would just be the bigger person and ignore Ethan’s rude comment, but his back became rigid, and he slowly turned around.

Honestly, she couldn’t really blame him for fighting back. She had called out her ex–husband numerous times. There have been many opportunities because he was such a jerk.

“What did you just say to me?” Aidyn demanded and took a step in Ethan’s direction.

But, to everyone’s surprise, Skylar was quicker than her son. She rushed at Ethan, and in a blink of an eye, she was standing in front of him, pointing a finger in his face. Her body was shaking with anger, and energy was rolling off of her.

Olivia had only seen one other woman look so angry before. It had been Chloe’s mother, whenever Mrs. Windsor was defending her daughter. For all of that woman’s faults, she truly did love Chloe, and Olivia knew that Skylar loved her son more than anything–especially since he was an only child.

“Don’t you ever insult my son again,” Skylar growled in a low, even voice. Her tone was almost too calm. It was how someone sounded right before they snapped. “You aren’t even fit to polish his shoes. He’s a respected surgeon. People travel from across the country just for the chance to be operated on by him.” She narrowed her eyes, but her lips turned up in a smile that held no joy. “Polin told me about you, Ethan. I know all about your torrid affair. So, I’m not going to silently stand here while you sit in the kitchen where the amazing woman you cheated on grew up.”

Ethan leaned away from Skylar’s unwavering gaze. He would never admit it out loud, but his heart was racing, and he hated the fact that he was intimidated by this woman. When he looked past her, his gaze honed in on Aidyn, who had crossed his arms and was staring smugly at him.

“Nice,” Ethan said to Aidyn, his voice full of sarcasm. “Do you always let your mommy fight your battles for you? You’re not going to win Olivia’s affections that way. Not when you’re competing in the big leagues. I might not like the guy, but Alexander and I are worth more money than you will ever see in your life.”

Aidyn opened his mouth to retort, but Olivia’s father beat him to it.
