Throughout the day, whispers followed me wherever I went.

“Did you hear that Jess is coming back?” a secretary said to her friend as they walked by my desk and stole glances at me.

“I wonder who Alexander will choose, Jess or Olivia,” a guy from finance murmured to his friend when I was walking by them to refill my coffee.

As the day drew to a close, my patience was wearing thin. I felt like I was balancing on a high rope that was about to be cut by a giant pair of scissors. I was distracted by the gossip flying around the office and made mistakes that I shouldn’t have when I was working.

I accidentally called one of our most profitable clients by the wrong name, and I filed paperwork in the wrong folder. Gai had to pick up my slack.

I couldn’t help but strain my ears so that I could hear what was being said about me. The craziest rumors I heard were that people were planning on taking bets on who Alexander would choose: Jess or me. Also, one of the secretaries would tell anyone who would listen that Alexander was going to turn into a polygamist and get married to both of us.

I tried to rise above all of the gossip, but it did get to me. I wished that people could just mind their own damn business.

As I was packing up to leave for the day, I walked past Alexander’s office. He was on the phone and laughing. A big, goofy grin on his face. Hot jealousy squeezed my heart as I stared at him. Who was he talking to? Was it Jess? Why was he allowing her to come back to the company? He was the CEO. He could stop her transfer. Was it because he wanted to cut a deal with Felix?

My stomach dropped as I considered a different reason.

Was it because he had unresolved feelings for her? Was he hoping to reconnect with Jess by bringing her back?

My hands clenched into tight fists, and my heart ached.

Technically, I was supposed to inform Alexander that I was leaving, but I wasn’t in the mood to

talk to him.

My mind spiraled as I drove home. It felt like a knife to the heart that Alexander had made the

final decision for Jess to come back. Why would he sign off on something like that? Depression came over me like a raining cloud even though the sun was shining.

When I walked into my apartment, I immediately took a shower, wanting to wash this day off of me. After I blow dried my hair, I dressed in a pair of jeans and a white tank top. I was just searching my fridge for a quick snack when someone knocked on my door.

I knew it was Alexander just by the way he knocked.

Even though I wasn’t that happy with him, my pulse still quickened as I opened the door.

Alexander was loosening his tie, and he had an annoyed expression on his face. “Why didn’t you wait for me to leave the office? I could have driven you.”

My hands tightened around the doorknob as my gaze trailed down his tall, muscular frame. Why did he have to look so sexy when I wanted to be mad at him?

“I didn’t want to leave my car at the office,” I answered, swallowing thickly.

Alexander walked in without being invited. Something that should have annoyed me, made anticipation wash over me like a tidal wave.

When I closed the door, Alexander gripped my hips and backed me up against the hard wood.

“Alexander!” I moaned as he kissed my neck, flicking his tongue against my pulse point.

He smelled like pine needles and fire, a heady combination that filled me with desire. Alexander captured my lips in a passionate kiss, moving his mouth against mine in that addictive way that I couldn’t get enough of.

Quickly, I became lost in his warm mouth and the way his hands touched me like he was memorizing every inch of my body.

When I ripped my mouth away from his to catch my breath, Alexander grabbed the backs of my thighs and wrapped my legs around his waist. Then, he pressed me back against the hard door.
