Kaia looked at the sharp, cold profile of the man next to her. Even though he didn't name names, she already knew exactly who was behind this. The problem was proving it.
"Dr. Chavez, it looks like we'll have to extend our stay for another day," Silas said. He immediately ordered his team to launch a full internal audit. Right in front of their partners, he initiated a conference call with the conglomerate's legal and technical compliance heads.
Kaia didn't panic. If someone was trying to torpedo her deal, she would just have to use her brilliance to crush them.
She spent the next three hours cross-referencing the forged data points in the anonymous email with her original, timestamped research logs. She compiled a devastatingly simple, irrefutable PowerPoint presentation mapping out the discrepancies.
She handed the report over to NorthStar's technical team. After a brief review, the tension in the room evaporated completely.
"With this report, Dr. Chavez, our concerns are entirely resolved. Here's to a successful partnership," the lead executive announced.
Silas stood off to the side, his gaze drawn magnetically to Kaia.
He exhaled a quiet breath of relief.
Thank God he had brought her along. If she hadn't been here to personally dismantle the accusation, this "little problem" could have dragged out for weeks.
The sabotage attempt had completely backfired, serving only to highlight Kaia's absolute competence. Whoever fired that shot in the dark was going to be bitterly disappointed.
They had expected the delay to cost them another night, but by late afternoon, the team was walking through the airport, ready to head home.
In the first-class cabin, the adrenaline crash hit Kaia hard. Between the intense negotiations and the stress of the false allegations—perhaps combined with her upcoming cycle—she was exhausted. She leaned back against her seat and fell asleep before takeoff.
When she woke up as the plane began its descent, she realized Silas's dark blazer was draped over her. She blinked, looking over at the man beside her.
Silas hadn't noticed she was awake. He was deeply engrossed in the project files from their trip. His profile was sharp, clean, and undeniably striking in the dim cabin light.
"Thank you for the coat," Kaia murmured gratefully.
Silas reached over to take it back, flashing a warm smile. "It's warm enough while you're awake, but it gets freezing when you sleep. I didn't want you catching a cold and delaying our rollout."
His easy, professional excuse made Kaia appreciate the gesture even more. "Thanks."
"We're almost on the ground. I'm not going to let this whistleblower thing go. I'm going to dig until I find them, and I'll make sure you get a proper explanation."
Kaia looked at him, slightly surprised, but nodded. "Alright. I'd appreciate that."
Kaia leaned back and looked out the window. In terms of sheer ruthlessness, Silas really did remind her a lot of Finnian.
As soon as the plane touched down and she took her phone off airplane mode, a flurry of missed calls and texts from Finnian popped up.
She played a voice memo from Brynlee. "Mommy! Are you off the plane yet? Daddy and I are at the airport to pick you up! Call me the second you land!"
