Looking at the weeping, pathetic man before him, Finnian felt like he was staring into a funhouse mirror. He, too, had lost someone irreplaceable. And just like Jasper, he was entirely stripped of the right to demand a second chance.
"Is it possible Noelle was actively seducing you?" Finnian asked, his voice dark and probing.
Jasper paused, wiping his eyes, and looked at him in silence. "I don't know for sure. But the vibe she gave off was always... if I just took one more step forward, she would fall right into my arms. She made me feel like success was guaranteed. I don't know if you understand that kind of feeling, Boss."
The words hit Finnian like a lightning strike. His handsome features darkened even further, hardening into stone.
Jasper's exact experience was a flawless carbon copy of his own youth. The only difference was that Finnian had never taken that 'one more step.' By the time he could have, Noelle had already become his sister-in-law. The shift in their titles had severed whatever fragile, unspoken romantic tension existed between them. But because she constantly flaunted her perfection, her innocent kindness, and her delicate vulnerability, she had successfully weaponized his masculine ego, twisting him into her fiercely protective 'older brother.'
But it had all been an illusion. Like morning fog on a river, vanishing the second the wind blew.
This wasn't some tragic, unrequited romance. It wasn't love. It was bait. He and Jasper were just two different fish swimming in Noelle's pond. She dangled her hook in the water, and whoever bit, she played with for a while.
A sharp, phantom pain lashed at Finnian's chest.
He stood up abruptly and pushed the trailer door open. The blinding afternoon sun poured in, forcing him to squint against the glare.
"Thank you for your honesty, Jasper."
Without a backward glance, Finnian strode out across the dirt lot.
Dexter hurried to keep up. Minutes later, the black Bentley was speeding down the highway, leaving the site far behind.
Finnian leaned back into the plush leather, his eyes squeezed shut. Jasper's words echoed relentlessly in his skull.
If I just took one more step forward, she would fall right into my arms.
What kind of twisted psychology was this? How many sick, duplicitous masks did she wear? How many men's lives and relationships was she willing to destroy just to stroke her own ego?
He let out a hollow laugh. The precious, innocent bond he thought they shared in their youth was nothing more than a trophy on Noelle's shelf, a pathetic testament to her ability to manipulate.
As evening fell, Noelle tried to call him. He ignored it.
A text immediately followed: Finnian! I heard the company closed another massive real estate deal! Congratulations!
Finnian stared at the glowing screen. Every word, every familiar cadence of her voice that he used to find so comforting, now made his skin crawl. It reeked of manufactured sweetness.
It felt like waking up from a decade-long fever dream. And if there was one thing Finnian Sanders despised more than anything in this world, it was being lied to.

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
