"If he actually tries to pull a stunt like that, getting this divorce is going to be even harder than mine," Celine said, a flash of pure anger crossing her elegant, intelligent features. "I'm already putting the screws to my ex. If he doesn't give me my freedom soon, I'm going for the jugular. I've got enough evidence to ruin him." Up until now, Celine had kept things quiet because they ran in the same social circles, and as a semi-public figure, a messy scandal could wreck her brand and career.
Kaia stared at her friend, a hollow realization settling over her. Neither of them had managed to find a decent man.
Looking down at her coffee cup, Kaia's voice tightened. "I suspect he's already ordered his corporate legal team to tear my draft apart. Knowing him, he's going to turn a simple, straightforward separation into an unsolvable nightmare."
"Kaia, you must have been completely blind back then. How could you fall in love at first sight with a guy like that? Just admit it—you fell for that ridiculously handsome face, not the man underneath." Celine's heart broke for her.
She had been there for the entire journey, watching Kaia go from a woman brimming with hope and romantic ideals to... this.
Hearing her talk about divorce in such a flat, emotionless tone proved exactly how much devastation and disappointment it took to force her into facing reality.
"Kaia, have you ever considered just... blowing this whole thing up?" Celine lowered her voice, her tone turning sharp. "Make it so messy they can't recover. Expose them to the public, let the two of them be judged by everyone. Let Noelle be the one everyone points at and spits on."
"I want to, but I can't," Kaia admitted, her eyes burning and slowly turning red. She propped her forehead against her hand, giving a slow shake of her head. "Mutual destruction isn't what I want. More importantly, the one person I have to protect above all else is Brynlee. My parents are disappointed, but they have my back. I have a support system. But if I make this a public spectacle, Brynlee is still so young. How is she supposed to face that kind of humiliation when she grows up?"
Celine leaned back against her chair and sighed bitterly. "Kids really are a woman's biggest weakness. But you brought her into this world, so you have to be responsible for her. Honestly, you're right. You don't need to make a scene. You have your career, your reputation. Once you're free, you'll find a great guy and get married again. Making things ugly now will only make it harder for you to find happiness later. Yeah, a clean, quiet break is the smartest move."
"Yeah." Kaia had always been logical. No matter how much it hurt, she had to cut the cord clean.
Seeing Kaia's teary eyes, Celine leaned in close and asked softly, "Kaia... is there even a tiny part of you that hopes he doesn't sign it?"
Kaia froze. She hadn't actually let herself think about that.
But even confronting it now, she nodded. "Of course I hoped that. But it's a foolish thought."
Celine reached across the table and pulled her into a tight, comforting hug. Women were simply too emotional, too quick to soften. They never had the ruthless cruelty of men.
"Kaia, what do you even feel for him right now?" Celine asked with genuine concern.
