It was Finnian and a few of his childhood friends and business partners. One was Julian Kendrick, Dr. Miles Kendrick's cousin, and the other two were also highly influential heirs in the city.
They were gathered around a table—clearly a private get-together.
Sitting right beside Finnian, dressed in a champagne slip dress, was Noelle.
Kaia frowned. Wasn't Noelle supposed to be on sick leave? Yet there she was, looking absolutely radiant and vibrant, without a single trace of the fragile invalid she had played yesterday.
She had her head tilted, smiling as she listened to one of the men speak. She gently swirled a glass of red wine in her hand and laughed at something he said, bringing her fingers to her lips.
Kaia didn't break her stride and continued to the restroom.
A few minutes later, having washed her hands, she walked back toward her private room. As she passed the lounge area again, the scene inside had shifted.
Noelle, wearing a coy, almost exasperated smile, was just about to finish the wine in her glass. Finnian, sitting right next to her, reached out with practiced ease and wrapped his hand around her wrist. Holding her hand steady, he leaned in and downed the remaining wine in her glass himself.
The movement was seamless, steeped in an undeniable familiarity and a distinct sense of possession.
Noelle looked startled for a second, then a flush crept up her cheeks. She shot Finnian a look that was half-complaining, half-delighted.
She gently pulled her hand back, letting her fingertips brush against the veins on the back of his hand—a gesture dripping with her usual privileged arrogance.
The others at the table exchanged knowing smiles. They were obviously completely used to this dynamic.
Finnian's face betrayed no particular emotion. He simply moved the empty glass away from her and placed a cup of warm tea by her hand instead.
Kaia took in the entire scene.
The bright overhead lights suddenly felt harsh, making her vision blur slightly.
She took a quiet breath, pulled her shoulders back, and returned to her private dining room to finish her business negotiations.
Looking at the red wine next to her, she remembered she had to drive home later. She swapped it for tea, raised her glass, and smiled at their partner. "Thank you for your sincerity, Mr. Wagner. A toast to a successful partnership."
The tea was warm, but it tasted bitter going down.
When the dinner ended, Kaia saw off her guests and said goodbye to her R&D director. She stood at the grand entrance of The Pinnacle Club.
