"You have to figure this out for yourself, Noelle. In this world, no one is ever destined to belong to anyone," Mrs. Wagner added.
Noelle wheeled herself back into her bedroom and sat in silence for a very long time.
When Mrs. Wagner brought her a bowl of premium bird's nest soup and turned to leave, Noelle suddenly pulled a small velvet box from her drawer. "This is for you. I hope everything we discussed today never leaves this room."
"Oh my, this... this is far too expensive!" Mrs. Wagner gasped, her eyes going wide as she opened the box.
It was a heavy Gold Necklace with a Ruby Pendant of incredibly high purity.
"Take it," Noelle urged. She was an expert at buying loyalty, and since Mrs. Wagner was firmly in her corner, she needed to reward her handsomely. "Consider it a token of my gratitude for your concern. It felt like the care of a true elder. I won't forget your kindness."
Mrs. Wagner's fingers trembled as she clutched the necklace.
She had worked for the Sanders family for years and had seen her fair share of luxury, but she owned almost nothing of value herself. This necklace was more than enough to let her flaunt her wealth in front of her friends.
"Thank you, Noelle," Mrs. Wagner said, her eyes welling up with greedy tears. "Don't you worry about a thing. Whatever you need, just say the word, and I'll handle it."
Noelle nodded slowly.
"I need you to keep an ear out for whatever is happening with Grandmother and Kaia."
"Consider it done!" Mrs. Wagner agreed instantly. "I heard Kaia is moving out of the estate. Spouses living apart? It's scandalous. Plus, Josephine has been pressuring Finnian to treat his wife better. You know how men are—the more you push them, the more resentful they get. Just watch, he's going to end up hating the sight of her."
Noelle listened silently.
"Josephine is in a foul mood right now, so don't rush back to the main house. I'll keep you updated on everything," Mrs. Wagner promised.
"Thank you," Noelle said softly.
Mrs. Wagner beamed and left, clutching her new treasure.
Saturday arrived, and Kaia officially decided to move into her new apartment.
She woke up at dawn, kissed her sleeping daughter's cheek, and got dressed. Just as she was about to start packing the last of her books in the study, she heard the sound of an engine in the driveway.
Walking over to the window, she watched Finnian's black Bentley navigate the circular driveway and speed off through the gates.
Kaia withdrew her gaze and went back to packing. She asked Layla to help load her boxes into the trunk, mentioning that she wouldn't be back for lunch and likely wouldn't return for dinner either.
Layla already knew Kaia was moving closer to her clinic. A wave of profound sadness hit the housekeeper. Had the master and madam truly reached the point of separation?
"Of course. Just let me know if you need help packing anything else," Layla said, struggling to hide her sorrow. She couldn't bear to see Kaia leave; she was a wonderful employer who had never once made things difficult for the staff.
Kaia nodded. "I will, thank you."
By eight o'clock, Kaia had dressed Brynlee in a cute outfit and taken her to the grocery store.
