Was this entire family really going to be dictated by one old woman?
Finnian had his driver take him straight to the Chavez residence. Brynlee lit up the moment she saw him, while Jane and Warren Chavez exchanged a loaded look across the room.
"Mom, Dad, thank you for watching Brynlee these past two days. I'm here to take her home," Finnian said warmly.
Jane immediately countered, "How are you going to take care of her all by yourself? Just let her stay with me."
"Grandma, Daddy isn't doing it alone! We can go find Mommy together," Brynlee chimed in cheerfully, blinking her big, innocent eyes.
Looking at the child's pure gaze, Jane felt a sharp pang of anger.
A perfectly good family was on the verge of collapsing. If they were handing out blame, Jane believed both of them carried it.
Kaia had charged headfirst into a blind marriage, and Finnian had never been ready to be a husband. Two people with absolutely zero emotional foundation—how on earth did they end up bringing a child into this?
Jane distinctly remembered lecturing her daughter endlessly back then. She had told Kaia to just enjoy her marriage for what it was and to keep herself on birth control. Bringing a life into the world required massive responsibility.
But Kaia hadn't listened to a word. Less than a year in, she was pregnant.
Finnian had actually been ecstatic about the baby. During Brynlee's earliest years, they genuinely looked like a complete, happy little family. The in-laws were reasonable, the elders were supportive, and aside from Brynlee's congenital heart defect, there was absolutely nothing to worry about.
"Finnian, are you in a rush to leave?" Jane had hit her limit. She had once adored this incredibly capable, polite son-in-law, but now the sheer sight of him made her physically sick.
"No, Mom. I'm not in a rush," he smiled.
"Then step outside for a moment. I need a word with you."
Jane walked out into the yard first. A flicker of unease crossed Finnian's eyes, but he followed her out.
"Mom, what did you want to talk about?" He always maintained utmost respect for his mother-in-law.
Jane stopped and turned around, her gaze stripping away all pleasantries.
"Finnian, I want to talk about you and Kaia."
Finnian stiffened, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply.
