Finnian, however, simply swirled his wine and looked at him. "Julian, you go after her."
"I shouldn't. You go," Julian said, knowing his place.
"I'm her brother. Why would I go? You're the right person for this." Finnian remained firmly in his seat.
Seeing that Finnian wasn't going to move, Julian turned and sprinted out the door.
Finnian's hand went completely still. A second later, he knocked back his wine in a single gulp, poured himself another half-glass, and stared at it, lost in his own thoughts.
Noelle had no idea how she made it outside. All she remembered was standing by the door, hearing the words fall from Finnian's lips. He actually wanted to set her up with Julian.
How could he be so willing to let her go?
Noelle reached down and touched her lower stomach, her running suddenly coming to a halt. Tears spilled over her lashes, tracing heavy, silent lines down her cheeks.
Stepping out of the elevator, she found herself on a busy street. The fight entirely drained from her body, she kept her head down and walked aimlessly. The dim yellow streetlights stretched her shadow long across the pavement.
Her mind was completely blank. She couldn't process the reality of what just happened.
Finally, exhausted and unable to take another step, she slowly crouched down by the curb like an abandoned puppy.
When Julian burst out of the building, he frantically scanned the street. Spotting a small figure huddled under a streetlamp, his heart clenched. He sprinted toward her.
Breathless, he slowed his pace as he approached.
Noelle was curled into herself, her arms wrapped tight around her knees, her face buried. Her shoulders shook violently as she wept in total silence.
An invisible hand squeezed Julian's chest. He walked up quietly and stopped beside her.
Sensing someone near, Noelle caught a scent on the breeze—it wasn't the one she was desperately hoping for. She slowly lifted her head and saw Julian standing awkwardly over her, his expression full of heartbreak.
"Julian..." Her voice was a ragged whisper. Her eyes were swollen and red, her makeup completely ruined by her tears.
Seeing her look so devastatingly fragile sent a pang of sharp pain through Julian. He crouched down beside her.
"You heard everything?"
"Yeah." Noelle lowered her head again, seemingly ashamed to let him see her like this.
"I'm sorry. I had no idea Finnian asked us to dinner to talk about this. I only found out when he... If this hurt you, I'm so sorry."
Noelle bit her lower lip, remaining silent as her tears continued to fall.
