Kaia gripped her phone, remaining completely silent. She harbored a deep-seated disgust for Noelle, so she couldn't care less about what was happening in the woman's life.
However, the detail about Noelle throwing water on a date did catch her attention.
An adopted daughter living under someone else's roof should naturally be cautious and read the room. How did she have the audacity to throw water in someone's face? It could only mean she knew someone powerful was backing her up.
Kaia could already picture the scene perfectly in her head.
"Grandmother, that's her business. I don't really want to hear about it," Kaia stated, making her boundaries clear.
Sensing her reaction, Josephine chuckled. "I know you have a strong distaste for Noelle. The girl is scheming, manipulative, and good at putting on a front. It's a shame she's such a convincing actress that no one else sees through it. But having watched her grow up, I know her inside and out. Despite her endless plotting, she's not fundamentally malicious..."
Kaia strongly disagreed with that assessment.
Demanding a child from her brother-in-law on the exact day of her husband's funeral—how was that not malicious?
What normal woman could do something so utterly depraved and morally bankrupt?
When Rafael Sanders was alive, he had pampered Noelle like royalty. No one dared cross her; if her eyes so much as reddened, Rafael would spend hours coddling her.
Once, Kaia had envied Noelle. She thought Noelle and Rafael were the perfect couple, deeply in love and completely devoted to each other. She used to secretly hope that Finnian would turn out to be a husband who cherished his wife just like his older brother did.
But she never expected that the moment Rafael was gone, Noelle's so-called profound love would vanish instantly.
The incident on the day of the funeral had completely shattered Kaia's worldview. It made her question humanity and the basic moral fabric of society. Only later did she accept the ugly truth: Noelle was rotten to the core.
"Grandmother, I'm a bit busy here. Once I get back to the States..."
"Finnian agreed to personally set Noelle up with a top-tier bachelor, Kaia. I know what you've been worrying about, but you can put your mind at ease. Just enjoy your vacation. I'll keep an eye on things here at home. By the time you get back, all these annoying little problems will be sorted out." Josephine didn't spell it out entirely, but every word she spoke was designed to falsely reassure Kaia.
Hearing this, a cynical smirk tugged at the corner of Kaia's mouth. Her eyes brimmed with mockery.
What new game was Finnian playing now?
*Personally* setting her up? Could he really bear to do that?
"Grandmother," Kaia said, fully understanding the old woman's angle. Feigning gratitude, she replied, "Thank you for the comfort. I'm going to hang up now."
Josephine caught the chilling detachment in Kaia's voice and didn't push further. After a few more pleasantries, she ended the call.
Kaia stood holding her phone as Brynlee came skipping over. Her little braids were perfectly done, decorated with two adorable bunny clips.
