What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 372

"Celine has to head back home for an emergency, sweetie," Kaia said, smoothing her daughter's hair. "You're stuck with just me for the rest of the trip."

"Oh," Brynlee murmured, looking disappointed.

Kaia pulled her into a hug and told her to say goodbye.

At eleven-thirty, Kaia led Brynlee down to the hotel lobby. Finnian was sitting at a corner table, casually sipping coffee as if he'd been waiting for them all morning.

"Dad!" Brynlee squealed, sprinting into his arms. "Guess what? Celine had to go home for an emergency!"

Finnian paused, his gaze shifting to Kaia. "Your friend left?"

Kaia nodded. "Yes. Work emergency. I've decided to book a flight back for tonight as well."

A flicker of satisfaction flashed in Finnian's eyes. "Take my private jet. I'm heading back today too."

"Yay! Mom, let's fly with Dad!" Brynlee had no idea about the silent war waging between her parents. In her innocent mind, they were simply a family.

Kaia lowered her gaze, pressing her lips together in a tight line.

"If you fly commercial, you'll have to deal with layovers," Finnian pointed out, his tone thoroughly reasonable. "It'll add at least six hours to the trip. You really want to drag Brynlee through that?"

Kaia glared at him. She desperately wanted to tell him to take Brynlee on the jet while she flew commercial, but she couldn't say that in front of their daughter.

"Mom, please? Let's go together. Please!" Sensing the tension, Brynlee grabbed Kaia's hand, looking up with huge, pleading eyes.

Finnian wasn't in the best mood either. Seeing Kaia so determined to keep her distance, he decided to push her buttons. "What, are you too scared to fly with me?"

Kaia stopped dead, staring at him.

"I mean, if you're intimidated, I won't force you..."

Kaia glanced at her daughter, then back at him. She saw exactly what he was doing. He was baiting her.

"How old are you, Finnian?"
