"I understand," Kaia replied, her face completely blank.
"Dr. Chavez..." Laura hesitated. She didn't care what the gossips were saying outside, but she knew exactly how much Kaia had to be hurting inside.
For her own husband to publicly protect another woman—even handing over the family conglomerate's assets to do it.
It was basically a public execution of her marriage.
"I'm fine. You can go back to work," Kaia said, knowing exactly what Laura wanted to say.
"This new GM is taking things way too far. She has absolutely zero sense of boundaries," Laura cursed bitterly before turning to leave.
Kaia lowered her eyes to her desk. A framed photo of their family of three sat right on top.
She reached out, grabbed the frame, threw it into a drawer, and locked it.
Maybe in Finnian's eyes, she wasn't a wife anymore. She was a strategic asset—a human shield providing cover for his twisted devotion to his brother's widow.
A knock on the office door broke her thoughts, and Silas strolled in.
The young, handsome man wore an unreadable expression, but looking closely, there was a faint trace of a mocking, playful smirk.
"Kaia, how are you holding up?" He leaned both hands on the edge of her desk, looking down to admire her perfectly calm face. "I told you, my cousin is more than happy to ship you off to work for me."
Kaia leaned back in her chair. Her naturally stunning, aloof features were sharp with a cold, crystal-clear realization. "You knew this was coming the whole time, didn't you? So, am I just a complete joke to you right now?"
"You wound me, Kaia." Silas immediately dropped the smirk, looking incredibly innocent and sincere. "My heart just aches seeing you pour years of love into a marriage, only to be completely derailed by a single tear from a certain someone's eye."
Silas delivered the line perfectly, sounding like he actually meant it.
"Save it." Kaia stood up calmly. "Your motives aren't exactly noble either."
Kaia's eyes remained calm as she stared at her computer screen. "Got it."
"I won't be attending the afternoon meeting. Let's see what incredible insights this parachuting GM has for us first." A fleeting, dangerous coldness flashed through Silas's eyes.
At 1:50 PM, Kaia walked into the conference room right on time, holding her laptop.
She picked a seat toward the back, staying out of the spotlight as people filed in.
When they saw her, their expressions were a mix of awkwardness and pity, and by unspoken agreement, no one came over to talk to her.
Right around two o'clock.
Noelle, flanked by Finnian's chief assistant, strutted gracefully into the conference room.
