Finnian paused. It sounded like a total brush-off, and the familiar ache in his chest flared up again.
"Why haven't you two gotten married yet?" he finally forced the question out.
In truth, watching them be so inseparable and affectionate for over a year, Finnian had been bracing himself to receive a wedding invitation, fully expecting to attend as the father of her child and her ex-husband.
Yet to this day, neither Kaia nor Simon had made any move toward the altar.
Kaia blinked in surprise before offering a soft smile. "Simon said he wants to wait until after Brynlee's surgery before we discuss it."
Finnian flinched.
"Why?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"He doesn't want to overwhelm Brynlee emotionally. Marriage is a massive change, and she's still very young." Kaia had been stunned for a long time when Simon first brought it up.
Even the elders of the Quinn family agreed. The child's health was paramount, and they didn't want any major life shifts stressing her out before the operation.
They could easily postpone the wedding planning until after she had fully recovered.
Kaia felt incredibly blessed to have the unwavering support of the Quinn family.
Finnian lowered his head, a storm of complex emotions raging inside him. Simon was thoughtful enough to consider things that far ahead—he honestly deserved to have her as his wife.
"Kaia, you've been with him for over a year now. Have you ever compared me to him? Am I really that awful?"
Kaia hadn't expected him to bring that up. "There's no comparison," she answered flatly.
All color drained from Finnian's face, and he let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. "Really? Am I truly that pathetic?"
Realizing he had misunderstood, she clarified, "When I say there's no comparison, I mean there's absolutely no need to compare. It's not that you're worthless; it's just that everyone's priorities are different."
"How so?" Finnian pressed desperately.
Kaia crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair. "When I was with you, there was no emotional connection. It was entirely one-sided. But with him, it's different. It's a mutual partnership."
It felt as if a sledgehammer had slammed directly into Finnian's chest, leaving him breathless with agony.

The readers' comments on the novel: What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage
Finnian is finally awake to Noelle’s schemes! I hope he cuts the cord completely and brutally. He needs to truly repent and suffer the consequences for all the pain he caused Kaia and his blatant favoritism toward Noelle. Only then should there be even a slight hope of Kaia softening her heart....
