What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 661

Brynlee Sanders's heart surgery was scheduled for the autumn of her seventh year.

Leaves rustled outside, but the long corridor leading to the operating room was suffocatingly silent.

Finnian Sanders had started contacting the top cardiovascular surgeons in the country and abroad three months in advance.

He meticulously screened round after round of treatment plans.

He confirmed and reconfirmed the risks, over and over again.

Kaia Chavez reviewed the files with him countless times, neither of them daring to relax for even a second.

Both of them were the kind of people who had never truly been afraid of anything.

They were confident, proud, and absolutely commanding in their respective fields.

But today, they were terrified.

The night before the surgery, Brynlee was moved into a private room and changed into a hospital gown.

The oversized blue-and-white stripes only made her look more fragile and slender, emphasizing how she was half a head shorter than kids her age.

Her hair was tied into two little braids as Kaia sat beside her, reading a book together.

As she turned the pages, Brynlee suddenly got distracted. She pointed out the window. "Mom, a little bird just landed over there. It's so high up. It's so brave for flying up here."

Kaia's chest tightened with a suffocating wave of despair.

She pulled her daughter into her arms, resting her chin on top of the little girl's head. "Yeah, the bird is very brave, and my Brynlee is a strong, brave girl too."

Brynlee leaned against her mother's chest and asked in a small voice, "Mom, I'm not going to die, right?"

Tears welled up in Kaia's eyes, but she fought them back, keeping her voice incredibly gentle. "No, baby. You're going to be just fine. Mom and Dad will be waiting right here for you."

Brynlee didn't say anything else, but after a moment, she moved.

She reached up and wrapped her arms around her mother's neck, holding on as tightly as she could.

Kaia could feel the little girl's fragile body trembling; she was just as terrified.

A tear finally slipped down Kaia's cheek as she buried her face in her daughter's shoulder, not daring to make a sound.

Finnian stood at the door of the hospital room, holding their dinner.

Seeing the mother and daughter holding each other, he didn't go in to interrupt, simply leaning against the doorframe.

He saw how desperately Kaia was trying not to cry.

His own eyes grew heavy with emotion.

He thought back to the day his daughter was born—so tiny, so wrinkled, crying at the top of her lungs because she was hungry.

He had been entirely at a loss, too scared to even hold her.
