What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 85

Five percent of the conglomerate's shares was a figure massive enough to tempt anyone.

Josephine was willing to pay a heavy price to keep Kaia around. It was the best and most secure solution she could think of right now. The Sanders family had already lost one grandson; the issue of succession had to be addressed seriously.

A flash of shock crossed Kaia's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.

"Grandmother, thank you for your generous offer," she began.

Josephine's eyes lit up. Was she actually considering it?

"However," Kaia continued, dashing those hopes instantly, "I already have Brynlee, and her health requires a lot of my time and energy. I have no plans to have another child right now."

Josephine looked stunned. She opened her mouth to argue, but found she had nothing to say. She felt a deep sense of frustration.

Kaia truly wasn't like the other women who married into wealthy families just to serve as incubators. She was highly capable in her own right and didn't need to trade her womb for family rewards.

Furthermore, considering Finnian's rebellious and unfaithful behavior, why would Kaia agree to tie herself to him even tighter with another child?

"I understand. We won't talk about this for now. But my offer stands—no matter when you change your mind," Josephine said, disappointed but empathetic to Kaia's situation.

Kaia nodded, and the two shifted the conversation back to Josephine's health, dropping the topic of a second child entirely.

That afternoon, Kaia left Brynlee at the Estate with her mother-in-law and hurried over to Veridian Future's offices.

After a 3:00 PM meeting, Silas knocked on her door and walked in carrying a cup of coffee.

Kaia thanked him and took a sip, noticing he wasn't making a move to leave. She looked up at him, noting his inscrutable expression.

"You didn't sleep at all last night, did you?"

She leaned back in her chair, her voice flat. "How did you know?"

"I also know that Noelle was forced to kneel in the chapel, my cousin stormed in to rescue her, and Grandmother was so furious it triggered a severe migraine, meaning you had to be called out in the middle of the night to treat her." Silas seemed to know she had been kept in the dark, so he mercilessly ripped the band-aid off. Smiling half-jokingly, he added, "Right now, Noelle is resting in a hospital bed. Who knows where my dear cousin is at this exact moment?"

Kaia felt a sudden, sharp tightening in her chest. She gripped her coffee cup harder. "Why are you telling me this?"

Silas leaned over her desk, resting his hands on the surface as he looked at her. "Because you're one of the main characters in this drama. You shouldn't be kept in the dark while such an entertaining show plays out."

Kaia frowned.

Just as she was about to say something, her phone rang.
