Chapter 406

Seeing that he still had the nerve to argue, Kaia slowly looked up and met

his eyes.

The moonlight caught her face; there was no anger, only utter, chilling calmness.

“Finnian, what more is there to say? Every single thing you’ve done for her-is that how a brother acts?” She scoffed, her soft tone piercing him like needles. “Tell me, have you ever done any of those things for me? I am your wife, yet all your tenderness and concern go to your ‘sister’. In your eyes, is that not a betrayal? What do you call it?”

Exhaustion suddenly washed over him. He sank onto the couch, his face draining of color. “My feelings for her… I just…”

He tried to find the right words to justify his actions, but under her sharp, clear gaze, all his excuses felt hollow.

Looking back since Rafael’s death, every favor he did for Noelle could technically be rationalized. Yet, strung together, the picture wasn’t entirely innocent.

Seeing him struggle, Kaia knew her point had landed.

ache for “You know exactly how you feel about her. You care for her, you her, you want to protect her-because she’s in your heart. Finnian, I don’t need a confession, and you don’t need to explain. Love is a two-way street. For Brynlee’s sake, let’s just end this peacefully.” She was so tired. She had turned a blind eye for so long, enduring it all just to finally get a clean break and a quiet life with her daughter.

He jolted, staring at her, swallowing hard.

He wanted to say that his feelings for Noelle were purely familial, that he never intended to cross any lines.

His lips pressed into a thin line, and he leaned his head back, pinching

the bridge of his nose. He hadn’t crossed the ultimate line, but he hadn’t maintained a safe distance either. He had blurred the boundaries.

Those ambiguous, unspoken ties were like a spider’s web-invisible, yet suffocatingly tight.

His phone buzzed again.

It was a text from Noelle. Just three words: Kaia knows everything.

Seeing him freeze, Kaia forced a smile. “Call her back. Don’t let her worry. Pregnancy and stress don’t mix.”

His mind was a mess. He grabbed his phone and walked to the door. Pausing, he looked back. “Kaia, she and I really…”

‘There’s no need,” she cut him off coldly. “It’s none of my business.”

He frowned, stepped out into the hallway, and shut the door.

It was dead quiet. He didn’t dial Noelle immediately. Leaning against the wall, he closed his eyes, her accusations echoing in his head.

Is that how a brother acts?

Was it truly inappropriate?

Had he crossed the line?

Were his constant protection and care really beyond the scope of a

brother-in-law?

After staring at the ceiling for several long moments, he finally called Noelle.

“Finnian…” Her voice was anxious. “Kaia answered earlier. I thought it was you, so I mentioned my nightmare and the baby… I’m so sorry, I had no idea. Is she furious?”

He stayed silent for a second. “She’s not angry.”

“Really? Because she sounded so… cold. I’m worried she’s going to cause

trouble for you.” Her voice dripped with concern.

Suddenly, he didn’t want to hear it. For some reason, this conversation felt entirely wrong

“Finnian, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called so late…”

“Noelle, you should call me Finnian,” he interrupted abruptly. “I’m your brother-in-law. Keep it professional.”

Silence stretched over the line. He could hear her breathing quicken.

“Get some rest. Mom is with you; if you need anything, ask her. It’s late here. I’m going to bed.” He hung up without waiting for a reply.

The hallway went quiet, the phone screen going dark. He turned back to the door, raised his hand to knock, but let it drop.

Eventually, he knocked. Kaia opened it and immediately walked back to bed, getting ready to sleep.

“Turn off the lights,” she said as she lay down.

He did as instructed, leaving only a dim light spilling from the bathroom, plunging the room into shadows.

He sat on the couch, staring at her back.

Knowing she was still awake, he spoke. “Kaia, what you said earlier… I admit half of it is true, but… that wasn’t my intention.”
