“Yeah, probably, Finnian nodded, his mind racing.

“Mom! Brynlee wriggled out of Finnian’s grip and dashed joyfully toward Kaia.

Kaia was in the middle of discussing the restaurant’s menu with Simon when she heard the familiar voice. She turned around to see her daughter running happily toward her.

“Brynlee, what are you doing here?” Kaia asked in surprise. Then, she spotted Finnian standing by the staircase, his arms crossed over his chest.

“Mom, are you and Mr. Quinn talking about work?” Brynlee asked curiously, then turned to greet Simon. “Hi, Mr. Quinn!”

Simon had also noticed Finnían lurking nearby. He offered Brynlee a warm smile. “Have you eaten yet? Do you want to eat with us?”

Brynlee looked back at Finnian in the distance, then shook her head. “I won’t interrupt you and Mom talking about work. But I want Mom to take me to the bathroom.”

Kaia stood up immediately. “Sure, Mom will take you.”

Watching Kaia lead their daughter toward the restrooms, Finnian finally marched over to the booth. Simon looked a bit uncomfortable as he approached. He had no idea Kaia and Finnian were divorcing, so he still viewed Finnian as her legitimate husband. Being caught out to dinner with another man’s wife made him feel undeniably guilty.

“Did she tell you everything?” Finnían demanded out of nowhere, the moment he reached the table. Simon looked completely bewildered, not even having a chance to ask what Finnian meant. Finnian let out a harsh scoff. “She signs the divorce papers in the morning, and by nightfall, she’s having a candlelit dinner with an old flame. She really knows how to manage her schedule efficiently.”

“What…” Simon, who had been feeling guilty seconds ago, was stunned by the revelation Finnian had just handed him on a silver platter. “You’re getting divorced?”

Seeing Simon’s genuine shock, a myriad of complex emotions flashed through Finnian’s dark eyes. “Don’t tell me you just found out?”

Simon let out a low chuckle. “Kaia didn’t say a word. But thank you for letting me know, Mr. Sanders. Now I do.”

Finnian’s already shattered ego felt like it had been stabbed twice over. He glared at Simon, a muscle ticking in his jaw, before pulling his lips into a tight line. “It seems I misspoke. We’ve decided to keep this confidential, Mr. Quinn…”

“I won’t breathe a word to anyone,” Simon assured him.

Finnian felt utterly humiliated, as if he had just been thoroughly played. He had no one to blame but himself and stood there seething silently.

“I won’t interrupt further.” Finnian turned on his heel just as he saw Kaia returning with Brynlee.

Brynlee seemed to have finished her conversation with Kaia. She trotted over and grabbed Finnian’s large hand. “Dad, let’s go upstairs and eat. My tummy is rumbling.”

“Alright,” Finnian replied to his daughter, though his piercing gaze remained locked on Kaia.

Kaia spoke with cool indifference. “I might be home late. Drop her off a little later.”

“How late?” Finnian demanded.

“I don’t know.” Kaia couldn’t even be bothered to elaborate.

Finnian glanced at his daughter. “Brynlee has school tomorrow. She shouldn’t be staying up late.”

“You don’t need to remind me. I know.” With that, Kaia slid back into her booth.

Defeated, Finnian had no choice but to lead his daughter back upstairs to their private room.

As soon as Kaia sat down, she noticed Simon fighting back a smile. Curious, she asked, “What is it? What’s so funny?”

Simon looked at her, his eyes dancing with amusement, but he didn’t reveal the true source of his joy. Instead, he lifted his water glass. “We both drove here tonight. Otherwise, this would definitely call for a celebratory drink.”
