Elaine stood frozen in place, looking as if she had just been slapped across the face. Her complexion shifted rapidly from sickly green to flush red. She wanted to scream at Kaia to come back and finish the fight, but it felt like cotton was stuffed down her throat.
As Kaia pushed open the doors of the coffee shop, passersby couldn’t help but stare. The massive coffee stain on her white lab coat was impossible to ignore.
Elaine collapsed back into her chair, a surge of fury rushing to her head and turning her eyes red.
Contrasting the icy stranger Kaia had just become, Elaine suddenly remembered the girl from years ago. When Kaia first married into the family, she had been timid but obedient, standing closely by Finnian’s side and sweetly calling her Mom. Elaine had been entirely against the marriage, so for the first year, she had treated Kaia with complete indifference. But Kaia’s subsequent actions had slowly worn her down.
In Elaine’s eyes, Kaia’s background was embarrassingly mediocre. But at least she was sensible and well–behaved. Once she joined Aethelstan Biopharma, her talent became undeniable. Year after year, her stellar performance only elevated Finnian’s reputation. That was when Elaine finally realized her son hadn’t married a gold digger, but a golden goose capable of generating immense wealth for the Sanders empire. From then on, Elaine opened her heart, accepting Kaia and treating her like real family.
But now, everything was ruined. Kaia had grown wings. She had fame, prestige, and a staggering fortune, and now she was demanding a divorce. Worse, she acted entirely superior, as if she were the one discarding her brilliant son.
How could Elaine not be furious? The little girl she had once looked down upon was now dumping her perfect, high–achieving son.
She stared at the cash left on the table, absolute resentment boiling in her veins.
When Elaine finally stormed out of the coffee shop, her anger hadn’t faded in the slightest. She got into the car and ordered Mr. Lynch to drive straight to The Sanders Tower.
Mr. Lynch caught a glimpse of her face in the rearview mirror and looked alarmed. Had she just gotten into a screaming match with Kaia?
During the entire ride, Elaine only grew more enraged. A woman with an average background dared to demand a divorce from her son? Did Kaia seriously think Finnian wasn’t good enough for her?
The black luxury sedan pulled up to the entrance of The Sanders Tower. Elaine shoved the door open, her heels clicking aggressively and rapidly against the marble floor.
The beautiful receptionist lit up the moment she saw her, hurrying over to press the elevator button. “Are you here to see Mr. Sanders, ma’am?”
“Yes.” Elaine’s face was pulled tight, making her features look severe and harsh.
Noticing the dark mood, the receptionist wisely kept her mouth shut.
As soon as Elaine reached the executive floor, she ran into Dexter, who was on his way down. Dexter,
